Information Literacy Instruction: Theory and Practice

Rate this book
Leaders in the field of information literacy, Esther S. Grassian and Joan R. Kaplowitz have revised, expanded, and updated their comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of library instruction. This second edition covers all aspects and modes of information literacy instruction, including history and psychology, as well as how to create and design teaching materials, how to use new technology to support pedagogy, and how to utilize new developments in the field since the publication of the previous edition. The recommended readings and exercises at the end of each chapter help put ideas and concepts into practice. The companion CD-ROM includes institutional and library mission statements related to information literacy, a table listing pros and cons of assessment tools, a brief overview of learning styles table, examples of minimalist documentation, a sample PowerPoint slide show, a sample class outline, a two-minute yoga exercise, suggestions for further reading and the complete book bibliography, both with links to web pages.

It's a textbook. Definitely informative on the topic. A little dated even though it's not even a decade old. Dry at times. But I got a lot of use out of it as I learned about designing and implementing information literacy instruction modules in my future school library.

This behemoth of a textbook was extremely helpful and the author writes in an easy to read way. Even after the class on this topic was over, I found myself referring back to this particular text when completing work in other classes.

I DO wish I had bought the ebook though since I often found myself struggling to read it on the bus while wishing I could just search the text for the passage I was thinking about.

This was definitely a deju vu read, sort of a combination of my I/O Psy years mixed with ASTD Membership and materials. It is a well laid out title on the subject of Information Literacy, and includes a CD for some sample forms to use in planning/presenting a class. Found the chapters dealing with online instruction and technology to be good refreshers on many ways to enhance a student's experience of learning about not only info lit but also, unique ways to conduct research.

I am reading this book for a class. So far it has too much text (four whole columns; two per page) and not enough interactive/fun charts, graphs, etc. to break up the monotony. Very informational though, and will be a useful reference during my career.

I'll be reading this book for a while. I'll write more once I'm done with the class

Lots and lots of information in this one, sometimes more than needed and the authors often repeated themselves. I more skimmed than read it for this reason.

Great book for new or experienced practitioners who want to refresh their teaching. Required reading for my User Education class, it would be worthwhile to hang on to and refer to again.
