Genetic Snare

Rate this book
Betrayal, passion, adventure, primal sex, and a fight to the death. Mating a 26th century Oracan Bounty Hunter with a 18th century pirate has its little glitches. Bounty hunter Talos bows to pressure to bring his mate home for the completion of his strict warrior culture’s bonding ritual. Aidan, displaced 18th century Earth pirate— light-fingered, sly, charming and understandably naive about the new world he’s been thrust into— can’t wait. Even if it turns out someone wants him dead. The 26th century looks different, but it turns out to be a lot like his old life!

Laura Baumbach was one of the first gay romance authors I read when I was first getting into the genre - back when I was reading tons of slash fanfic and looking for something original, not based on my favorite TV shows. And I LOVED Details of the Hunt - so different, so sexy and hot, and fresh. And I kinda never thought we'd get the sequel but it's finally HERE and it was WONDERFUL!

I just adore Aidan, his mannerisms being all pirate, how clever he is and how he deals with being in the future. And he and Talos were just as hot as ever (although personally I wouldn't have minded a bit more hotness from them, especially at the end!) and I loved all the details in Talos' home planet and world building in this one.

For fans of this author and Details, I do think the wait was worth it! There are so many authors who were writing 10 years ago who aren't writing still today, or have series that are unfinished, so I think it's rare to actually get a long-awaited sequel. I LOVED it, thank you for getting it to us, Laura!

Meh.... this one was pretty underwhelming compared to the first. We did have the excitement of the mating ritual but even that didn’t spike my interests. There was also a few plot holes in the beginning but nothing major.

I am not sure if there will be another book in this series... I mean this one was written 10 years after the first. If there is a third book I hope they don’t all of a sudden pull that “needing a heir” bs. I thought they might pull it in this one but Talos made it pretty clear that wouldn’t be an issues. (It’s a major peeve of mine though so I figured I’d mention it)

Also, A+++ for weird alien sex again. Maybe not as shocking as book one but still up there.

Talos’s guttural reaction shot a thrill through the pirate. He loved being able to affect the stoic warrior like this, loved knowing he could take the hunter down to his most primitive level. He liked knowing Talos was just as hungry for him as he was for the warrior. It lessened his fears.

I kinda expected something different I think with this one. I don't know. It was good. I think what made this series for me was Aiden. He is the shit. Funny as hell, even in a crisis.

Aiden is feeling beside himself. He doesn't know what's wrong, other than he's horny as can be and can't get any relief without Talos. But something is making him weak and feverish and they can't figure out what. They are assuming it's the mating since no human has ever mated with an Oracan. Heck, no human has ever TOUCHED one. And now, on Talos’s home planet, he's feeling even worse. But nothing would have kept him away from Talos’s side, and Talos needed to be home. Plus, Aiden needed to do the trials for the Oracan 'people’ (beings) in order to be considered mated to Talos. But someone is out to get Aiden in order to make him lose. And Aiden is fighting with all his might not to. Even though his body is saying ‘enough’. With some help from his favorite doctor, he's determined to finish and move on. Just when he finally thinks it's all over, he's kidnapped again and this time he may not survive.

Man, Aiden just can't be left alone. Everyone seems to be out to kill him, kidnap him, or something. And this mating thing he can't decide whether to love or hate. He doesn't mind the hours of sex, but it never seems like enough and he can't even pleasure himself. His body isn't sated or can't finish without Talos. And boy, is he cussing about all of it lol. Plus, being stuck in these trials while sick as a dog, while the competition is trying to rape or murder him. When does it end? And Talos. He's often mistaken, especially by Dr. Jaclyn, as a brute, among other things. But all he wants is to take care of Aiden. To love him and mate him and claim him. He's overwrought with anxiety and anger trying to figure out what's wrong with Aiden. And everyone seems to be against him. When he's to the point of almost losing Aiden, enough is enough. He will do all he can to save him. *Sigh* so sweet. These two made this book. They have a lot of obstacles to overcome but they are warriors and will fight with all they have to survive.

I didn't like how Aidan was forced to undergo Oracan mating rituals, but since Aidan kicked asses, I grudgingly forgave Talos. The alien sex was hot, btw.

I don't know why I waited so long to read this one, but I loved it just as much if not more then the first book! The world building is fascinating so I really enjoyed getting to learn more about the Oracens, their home and Talos family. It was a lot of fun and a fast paced adventure, full of action and romance all in one.

Aiden is my favorite! I adore him so much, I love how we get to see how he uses his skills and history to help him in the challenges here. He is still the pirate at heart and I enjoyed getting to see him kick ass in all his trickery, the way he was able to use the fact his human against them was just perfect.

The adventure here heavily focuses on Talos home world and their peoples rituals, yet the story is very much over Aiden proving himself and I enjoyed every moment. Oh and as usual these two have incredible chemistry, the steam is always hot but it's their interactions as warriors and bond that really makes them so perfect together.

Overall I was swept up in this story from start to finish, I loved getting to see more of Talos and Aiden. Along with their adventures and learning more about Talos family, it was just a perfect entertaining follow up to the first book. I could still read more of these two and never have enough, something about them and the world building just works for me every time. Although there's a lovely, fitting and happy ending for these two all in this wonderful book!

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

From that review: "I will admit that maybe my review is colored by the fact that I've waited so, so, so, long for that damn book.  I mean I read the first one back in oh, I don't know either 2006 or 2007, when it first came out.  Loved it!  I mean there was a ginormous space alien on a hunt who talked like Sam Spade, then an 18th century swashbuckling pirate wooshed out of time and sea (literally) who becomes a naughty, captivating mate, and so much more.  And oh, yes?  Tentacle sex of a sort.

By the end of Details of the Hunt (Details, #1), I was just as ensnared as Aiden was.  Thoroughly hooked on their romance, mating, and Laura Baumbach's curious couple and her world building.  She then promised us a follow up, because they had mated and there was a ceremony Aiden and Talos had to undertake on Oracan to be official, and there was still potential mysteries floating about. So yes, needed that next story.  All the fans anxiously waited, sent texts, and waited some more.  But the sequel never appeared.  And years went by. I think most of us  probably thought it was forgotten under the stress and pressures of running MLR Press."

Talos, a 26th century Oracan Bounty Hunter, is finding his mating with Aidan, an 18th century pirate, comes with a few surprises. Not the least of which is that his family wants him to complete the bonding ritual on Oracan. Aidan is excited to visit his lover's home but it does come with problems. It seems someone does not want him to complete the ritual. As the attempts on his life become more deadly, Aidan realizes that the 26th century is not that much different from the 18th century.

Aidan is incredible. He is understandably naive where many things are concerned, but he is also not bound by conventions. He finds solutions where no one else would. He is very crafty and sly. He does know one thing though, he will not give up his Talos. Pick up Genetic Snare and delight in the love these two opposites have found. The story is fast-paced with some laughter and some tears. So hop on for the ride and enjoy the story of Talos and Aidan.

I've been waiting for this forever and ... I hate that I was kind of underwhelmed. I still absolutely adore Aidan and Talos. I love that they just adore each other. I still find Dr. Jacqueline distasteful and she infantilizes Aidan to no end, but it was really just Aidan showing the aliens that he could kick ass even though he was smaller and for the doctor to declare herself right all along and be smug about disliking Talos.

I also found several typos which I figured after waiting this long it should have been polished to perfection.

So while I was happy to see Aidan and Talos who are adorable and alien sex is kind of hot, it just seemed like the whole mating challenge was just an excuse for the book with no real "plot", just a chance to see sick-as-a-dog Aidan show he's superior.

I love many of Baumbach stories. Though, this one lagged in places, I enjoyed it overall. I considered 4 stars a lot because of the originality of the story. The typos / editing just threw me out of the story way too many times. I do not often notice issues other reviewers complain about, so if I notice multiple times,,, it's pretty bad. Extra words in setting places that disrupted the flow was the biggest problem.

Boy, do I love these guys

I fell in love with Aidan and Talos in Details of the Hunt and knew that I'd fall deeper in love with them here. Aidan is the strongest and most resilient guys imaginable and he manages to crack me up at every turn. I just adore him. And Talos may be a mighty warrior but his love and devotion to his Runt shine through. I love reading their adventures and wish there were many more of them.

Genetic Snare is an amazing sequel to Details of the Hunt. Its hard to write an equal sequel to the first book and this time Laura Baumbach done it right. I loved Aidan and Talos, bonding ritual. Aidan was again charming and full of wit. He was equally deeply in love with his hunter. Personally I hope we will get more in this series, because it was way to short!

I was hoping for more.

I liked this one but honestly after the first book I was really hoping for more. It seemed too short and skipped over a lot of stuff that I would have loved to have more details on. It was a good read though and the characters always interesting.

A Hot Soup of tropes/genres (in that good Tom Yum kinda way). I read this thinking I was getting erotic romance. I got Science Fiction M/M, Pirate & Alien Romantic Suspense. I mean it was well written, made sense most of the time. It took me a little while to figure out the mechanics of how the sex happened, because alien body parts. The world building in terms of biomechanics, physiology, culture, familial dynamics etc was well done. Even though it's the second in a series I don't feel like I missed out much by not reading the first.
