A poem book perfect for an ocean, science, or especially a poetry unit. This book uses the voice of tide pool animals to narrate each of the poems. There are hidden facts in each of the poems and the simple illustrations allow students to understand what the strange creature is.

This book is good for young children learning about the fascinating little creatures that live in tide pools in the oceans. Rhymes, information notes, great illustrations make this a fun read.

I really want to give this book 3 1/2 stars. I loved these poems about the creatures that live in tide pools. Each poem is about a different animal, and is accompanied by a paragraph of further information about it. My favorite is "Old, Cold Fish," about the sculpin, which I'd never heard of until I read this book. The only thing I wasn't too fond of was the illustrations, which remind me of "Spongebob Square Pants," which I loathe. The author provides a glossary and a handy list of books and ...more
The art is Okay, but the real strength of Ocean Soup is the various rhyming poems and factual information about various sea creatures.

Buoyant cartoon illustrations accompany poems of varying quality about sea creatures found in tide-pools. Each poem includes factual information about the corresponding sea creature and a factual blurb accompanies each poem as well. Good for kids who love all things ocean.
Whimisical illustrations, fun poems, and sidebars with factual information invite young readers to learn more about tide-pool life. Science vocabulary(regenerate, carapace) and rhymes add instructional value and interest.

For the upcoming water theme, this may offer poems for discussion with school-age children related to the ocean and the animals within.

The book is informative, and some of the poems are cute. The title is really intriguing. However, I didn't find the poetry particularly clever or well written.
