This is a nice little book on a subject I have never seen covered before. There is not too much text, but what there is is informative. I was surprised to see how lurid the purples were in the older examples. Another surprise was that many of the examples which were most refined to my Western eyes were sheets printed with actor's crests, the equivalent of getting a Brad Pitt poster. The text illuminated the content of the sheets. I would never have guessed at the oblique references to old plays, novels, and past times. Unfortunately, not all the plates are in color and the binding is such that a couple sheets had fallen out in the copy I had checked out of the library.
