Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts, and even other people. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information, and the right to call themselves Hunters.

PROGRESS
Gon and Killua are so incompetent at fighting the monsters on Greed Island that a Hunter named Biscuit has taken pity and offered to coach them in the use of their Nen powers. But the clock is ticking, for a violent player known as "the Bomber" has a plan to get his hands on all but ten of the item cards in one fell swoop.

Greed Island is so amazing. Living in a game is just cool and clearly Yoshihiro Togashi had put a lot of work in creating everything, from the slot cards and their rankings to how to obtain them and complete the game. As Laser, looking forward to seeing him in the next volumes! And even an ex-pro assassin can't resist gambling, that's how awesome is Killua. Hope we'll see more of Ryodan and Hisoka soon.

Gon and Killua are getting stronger day by day and after a hard training, they developed their own special abilities. Biscuit is as fabulous as ever and she obviously loves them. I might have enjoyed the manga as much as I enjoyed the anime of this volume. And it doesn't happen so often.

Hahahah.

We got to see Gon and Killua's intensive training courtesy of Bisky! Bisky was right. Ging created Greed Island to serve as Gon's training ground. It was a brutal training but it was very efficient for both of the kids. They both have huge potential to get even stronger but thanks to Bisky, they were able to achieve that faster than one individual can do. She was truly a great master and I loved her so much!!

We also got to witness another Hunter Exam. Killua needed to register for the exam and this was the first time Gon and Killua parted ways, even just for a few days. And of course, my boy killed it! He was able to pass the exam alone within an hour and a half. It was maybe the fastest Hunter Exam to ever happen.

After getting back inside the game and seeing the contact list, Killua discovered that Gon and Bisky may have encountered Chrollo. It was actually surprising. Chrollo shouldn't be able to enter the game because only Nen users are able to. But since he was imposed with Kurapika's Judgement Chain, he shouldn't be able to use Nen. Kurapika had a short appearance after he was contacted by Killua to notify him about Chrollo. He was confident that it wasn't Chrollo because he would definitely know once his enemy is able to remove his Nen.

The Phantom Troupe found the Greed Island outside of the game but they were stopped by Razor, one of the game creator and responsible for keeping intruders out of the island. The Phantom Troupe was forced to use the normal way of getting in the GI. They also discovered the name Chrollo Lucilfer was in their contact list and Shalnark immediately understood that it was a message from Chrollo about the Nen purger he was looking for was actually inside the game. Though it was not exactly correct, it was still quite about the Nen purger. And the one who used Chrollo's name was none other than Hisoka!

A minor antagonist, the Bomber, appeared in this volume and he was the main obstacle against clearing the game. It was actually a fight worth waiting for. I was getting nearer to one of my most favorite battles in HxH. Can't wait!

I enjoyed getting to see how Gon and Kil's training went in this one, and just how much progress they made in less than three months - which was honestly never more clear than when Kil went for his Hunter's Exam and just swept the floor with everyone in almost no time whatsoever.

There's also been so real impressive progress between Kil, Gon and Biscuit as far as the actual gameplay itself goes, and it's really clear that their training was super helpful as now apparently they're finding everything a breeze, which compared to how they started is honestly amazing ;D

I look forward to seeing what happens in the next volume! :D

Chapter notes below for reference:

I've been loving this arc. The unconventional training, and focus on the gameplay mechanics of Greed Island have me completely engrossed. Biscuit is also a very neat character. And it seems like Chrollo coming back could be imminent? We'll see.

Greed Island is pretty fun so far, but I genuinely hate how the manga seems to skip through or not take advantage of arcs that could potentially be interesting, like Killua taking the Hunter test again.

So I've recently read up to the 16th book and I'm not going to go back and add every single volume up to this.
I started this series back in eighth grade and even now, a few years later, it's still really enjoyable to read. It's by Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of Yu Yu Hakusho (I watched the anime of YYH before reading HxH). Both series are about a group of 4 boys/young adults who travel together and fight to become stronger- typical shonen manga. But what I like about HunterxHunter is that the protagonists, Gon and Killua, are much younger (11-12 years old) and the story plot is not as dark as that of YYH, where everything was sinister. I get a sense of Togashi's creativity through this series and I really like his art. This has become one of my favorite manga series and I hope several more volumes continue to come out soon. :)

These long hours of training that Gon and Killua go through, although a little relatively, are entertaining. It is fun to see these two improve at alarming rates even for their teachers. The Phantom Troupe has learned the truth about the game, and it is now only time before Killua and Gon do so too. Killua passed the Hunter exam easily and ruthlessly. He practically terminated all his other adversaries. And as soon as he returns to the game, they properly begin collecting more cards, motivated by a desire to both finish the game and avenge all the people that were killed by Bomber.

The best part of the story in this volume was the quick way Killua passed the exam. But the story progression is real fun still. 4 stars.

With the reveal of the villain of this arc, The Bomber is put on display. Their powers are intense and theirbrutality is on full display. When this series goes hard, it definitely delivers.

-three tricky stars-

140. They Got to Masadora, But... -- Gon and Killua didn't stay in Masadora long. Biscuit, the new trainer who's cute as a biscuit/button, orders them back to the isolated bedlands so they can train to be better fighters in the game and not have their cards stolen in one go.

141. They Went to Masadora Already, So I'll Go With a Different Title Now -- Biscuit observes how the game was meant as a training ground created by Gon's dad for his son and that had me ALMOST teary eyed. Biscuit's training methods are strange but effective and of course, fun to read about. Haha.

142. The Bomber -- We meet the villain for this arc. And he's truly a jerk. And a lying, conniving cheat.

143. Countdown -- We learn more about the Bomber's nen abilities and he's truly a formidable opponent even if he's a cheat and a scoundrel.

144. Release -- A lot happens in this one. Genthru, our cheat of a villain, bullies several other players into handing over the cards they had so painstakingly earned over the weeks.
Gon and Killua continue training with Biscuit and collecting cards by defeating beasts in the bedlands.
Aaaand we see the Phantom Troupe members making their way to the border of the Greed Island in a boat. The island does exist in the real world it seems. Intriguing.

145. Janken -- Razor, one of the Game Creators, stops the Phantom Troupe from entering the game and sends them packing. That was fun. Now it makes sense why people cannot enter the game from the real world and need the game consoles and stuff. The creators ensure it stays that way.

146. Abengane: Part 1 --Killua heads outside the game to retake the Hunter exam that he had been disqualified from the last time. Gosh that feels like a lifetime ago. Inside the game, another player named Abengane approaches Gon and Ms. Biscuit.

147. Abengane: Part 2 -- Abengane reveals to Gon and Ms. B about the Bomber's powers and betrayal. Later, when he's alone, Abengane does some nen ritual to get Genthru's nen bomb off of him and I wonder why he didn't do that for the others as well. Guess he's not as nice as he pretends to be.

148. The Exam Begins -- Killua becomes the sole candidate to clear the 288th Hunter's exam. Haha. This boy cracks me up. Guess he was in a hurry to get back to the game but still, the things he gets up to.

149. Encounter -- Killua reunites with Gon and Biscuit. The three are going through the game players' directory when they see a name that shocks them, Chrollo Lucifer, the ex-leader of the Phantom Troupe. I wonder if that was why the Troupe members had come to the island. The confusing part is that Chrollo's nen was sealed by Kurapika and without nen, one cannot enter the game. So the player using his name is someone trying to send a message. But who? Mystery, mystery. Haha. I laughed so loud when I saw who it was. That guy always has to cause some trouble.

150. Embarkment -- Gon and the others go out looking for more cards to win the game. The way they won the King White Stag Beetle cards was super fun to watch. They also got the Paladin's necklace card which will help ensure no one can hand them fake cards or simply steal their cards. Much needed protection.

151. Progress -- Gon is contacted by the player who initially bullied him and stole a card. This time the guy wants to do an honest trade and it goes surprisingly smooth. Gon and Killua are actually improving with the training and other players see them as worthy adversaries. I love the character growth.
Killua wins a few cards through the Risky Dice , essentially a gambling card. They also decide to offer Leave Cards to those players who no longer want to play and exchange that for the cards they need.
By the end of this volume, the boys have 57/100 cards. Not bad at all.

Gon and Killua continue their training under Biscuit, with a brief detour for Killua to leave the game and quickly get a Hunter's License. The trio then start speedrunning Greed Island by collecting all the Specified Slot Cards they can. Meanwhile, the Bomber(s) introduce themselves to other players. We also see Razor for the first time, who will play into next volume. And the Spiders infiltrate Greed Island (to be initially turned away by Razor), to try to play the game more legitimately in search of an exorcist for Quwrof, only to soon learn Hisoka is already here working for Chrollo on the promise of a battle after Kuroro gets cured of Curarpikt's Nen.

A lot happens in this volume, but I wish we had more time to flesh out Greed Island, rather than limiting the Card-hunting quest to a few montages. As Biscuit theorizes, Greed Island was probably designed by Ging with the intent of training Gon, and that's exactly what happens, with the "game" itself being secondary to Gon's training. The thing is, Heaven's Arena and Yorkshin barely had any magical-beasts, and the Chimera Ants we'll meet soon-ish are technically Calamities, which are a somewhat-different thing, so Greed Island is "useful" for world-building because of the "monsters" we see (unless Ging or a buddy had them Conjured rather than naturally occuring...).

I thought I recognized Genthru at the very beginning of the arc, but other circumstances made me think I was mistaken, that it was just another guy with similar glasses. Shows how bad my memory is.... The head-explosion spread is great, by the way!

The Card Shop girl is very cute!

Gon and Killua are learning advanced Nen from Biscuit with great enthusiasm. But as the year end comes near, Killua leaves the game 🎮 to attend the Hunter exam which he failed last year. In the Hunter exam, for the first trial all 1400+ players are asked to collect 5 cards of other players. With only one trial Killua becomes a Hunter. You guessed it correct; he collected all the cards without anyone getting any chance to do so. He returns back to the game post the exam.
I liked how Killua and Gon's friendship has deepened and how they care for each other. On the other side, the alliance members get bombs 💣 attached to them by the bomber causing them to return their 90 cards for their life but are tricked. There is one exorcist Abebgame in the alliance who warns Gon and Biscuit about the same.
The game has interesting cards but getting information on cards is difficult. Phantom 👻 Troupe has reached the Island 🏝 parts which is prohibited because of which they get removed from the game by one of the creators. There are lot of surprises since we also have Hisoka inside the game impersonating with Chrollo's name while entering the game. Chrollo is in search of exorcist which becomes a goal for Phantom Troupe. Whether they are able to free Chrollo from the curse remains to be seen.
The world of Greed Island is different from all books I have read and is refreshing concept. However how this arc ends seems to be a mystery.

If you're all about training and power development, this volume is a masterclass in such storytelling.

We see Gon and Killua training with Biscuit over the span of a couple months and it may be their greatest jump in power in the entire series. Their Nen application and awareness is improved exponentially to the point where they can actually hold their own against B-level monsters.

Moreover, they start to develop their unique abilities: We've already seen Killua start to harness his electricity, and Gon adapts his enhancer powers to the weaponized version of Janken (Rock-Paper-Scissors). The whole process is a delight to read.

Additional items:

- We finally know who this arc's Big Bad is: the spectacled Bomber. Not a nice guy!

- The Phantom Troupe is at the center of an interesting subplot: They first realize that , but get kicked out because they reached the island by unofficial means. But they are dedicated to return because they discover the key to returning Chrollo's powers might be playing the game.

- Hey, it's Hunter Exam season! Let's see if Killua can pass this year...

- Now that Gon and Killua are adequately trained, they can finally start playing the game and collecting cards. There's just that underlying presence of Bomber, who by now is making marinara sauce out of his competition.

4 stars.

It feels like its been a long while since I've read this series. I love seeing Biscuit train Gon and Killua, plus seeing them create techniques that work for them. I also loved seeing Killua completely dominate in the Hunter exams. (Also, the little cameos of past characters that haven't shown up in a few arcs made me happy) I liked seeing Kurapika for a little bit and I wonder if Neon will ever get her ability back. I missed him and Leorio and hope to see them soon.

Also I liked seeing the Phantom Troupe pieced together that Greed Island is real and that Chrollo hired Hisoka to find the nen remover.

Greed Island is turning out just like an interactive MMO. The way Togashi tackles this is quite compelling. As someone who plays video games almost daily I find it all very believable. Either the author plays his fair share of games or they 'know a guy' or there was some intense research.

The training sequence isn't boring. There's enough plot points to keep things enticing. The system for Greed Island is near perfect. I am reading HXH at a pace which is outpacing my ability to review these volumes and I love it.

It's cool that Greed Island is a mix between 'real' (in-universe) nen powers and the arbitrary bullshit that is wacky card-based MMO tactics. I think this arc can get a bit bogged down in the specifics of the game because wow that's a lot of cards with very specific purposes that don't really make a whole lot of sense, but Gon and Killua's actual training is cool. Oh, and Killua considers the Hunter's Exam! That was fun.

best book in the greed island arc (so far)!!
Perfect display of exposition, character development, world expansion, and showing off the phantom troupe while also giving us a glimpse of what’s to come!

Also, getting to see some of the side characters and events that happened in the manga and not in the anime has been a treat.

Still no Leorio though 😭 we only got a glimpse of Kurapika and Chrollo though 💔
