I won this from "first reads giveaway".

As a weight loss/exercise program it has everything~short 12 minute exercise routines, nutritional info, menu plans, shopping lists and a daily checklist.
The premise is doing what needs to be done in shorter bursts of time so you aren't overwhelmed by "a diet" or being a slave to an exercise program.

For myself, I liked the idea of 12 minutes because I really hate exercising. I've gained too much weight recently, have been pretty inactive and thought this would be an appealing approach. And it is EXCEPT that I have osteoarthritis in my spine, hips and hands, so many of the exercises are out of the question for me. I can see that I can adapt some of them however. There are great photos and directions and nothing is complicated. And each day is a different exercise routine (cardio, free weights, abs, yoga, etc....perfect! You don't get bored doing the same thing over and over again! For anyone who is physically capable of holding weights, twisting and bouncing...I see no problem.

The menus are OK...I'll never like hummus or couscous but there are enough substitutions suggested so you can use the menus as a "guideline".

This book is like having a personal trainer. The daily checklist is the best tool. I made copies from the book so that I can keep the checklist in view throughout the day as reminder! There is definitely a sense of satisfaction when you can check off each item and know you're doing it right!

It would have been a perfect book if it was spiral bound so that the book would open flat and you could refer to it easily while doing the short exercise routines.
Also it would have helped to have each day color coded on the page edge so that you could flip to the day easily. (I've put little tabs on pages to identify each day and the different exercise routines.)

I've lost 3 lbs. so far and I'm not really into it 100% yet.

This book is typical Denise--solid nutrition in easy to follow menus, along with easy to do exercise routines that take less than 12 minutes. Over all it's a good exercise and very simple basic diet plan. I like that fact the workout includes simple yoga and basic exercises you can do in your kitchen etc.

Extremely impressed with this book and its meal plans; I admit I did not pick this up for the exercise recommendations - I already have a good routine in place with yoga twice a week and some running/cycling on weekends, plus walking 10,000 steps a day. Working out has never been a problem for me, it's keeping track of what I eat and when that has been a consistent problem. I love food, and have tried Weight Watchers and MyFitnessPal for tracking consumption, but what I was really craving was a solid, nutritionally balanced, variety-filled, orderly, multi-week meal plan that would suit someone in their 30s who was slightly overweight, looking to lose a dress size in a reasonable amount of time.

I didn't want to feel hungry or deprived or bored, and this met all expectations. Even my partner was impressed with the dinners (I did breakfast, lunch and snacks on my own, but dinner for two). There were notes on different portion sizes for women & men, and helpful grocery lists. The meals broadened my horizons in terms of vegetables and cuts of meat I would not usually buy at the grocery store. Some personal favourites were: the steak kebabs with rosemary, mushrooms and peppers (amazingly delicious); baked Teriyaki halibut (so good), and several tasty grilled chicken recipes, as well as a nice vegetarian pasta that I would make again. Almost none of the recipes have more than 10-12 ingredients, and with adequate prep on Sunday or the night before, all of them can be cooked in 30 minutes or less, so great for commuters like myself.

Although I did not drop 12 pounds in 2 weeks, since my eating habits were pretty good to begin with and I only started at 5'4" and 150lbs, I did lose 10 pounds in 4 weeks, so down to 140 now. I liked the meal plans so much I bought a few other Denise Austin books, many of which have unfortunately awkward titles and/or cover art (like "Shrink Your Female Fat Zones" and "Lose Those Last 10 Pounds"... yikes) and have found good recipes there also - the Portobello mushroom sandwich from "Lose Those Last 10 Pounds" Week 1 Monday lunch is amazing.

So, I wholeheartedly recommend this author and her work. Yes, she is a little on the relentlessly cheerful and optimistic side, it's like being coached by a cheerleader on cocaine, but I prefer a sunny and upbeat outlook to the "work hard, be mean to yourself, fatso!" stance that seems to be the alternative attitude in the nutrition game.

Deserving of 5 stars for making me break some very bad habits, and teaching me how to snack, cook, shop and portion responsibly. Obedience to this plan will be rewarded with results.

Oh no, not another diet book! Since I have been a fitness trainer for longer than I care to admit, I have read countless books about diet and exercise. Even though I am still interested in new ideas related to diet and exercise, my eyes begin to glaze over at the thought of yet another rehash of more of the same, which we all know is pretty much eat less and move more. So, the book sat on my bedside table for a few weeks until I finally picked it up.

The book contains a clever gimmick, which is the "daily dozen" idea that permeates the volume, from the number of minutes of exercise per day (something anyone can achieve, no excuses allowed) to numerous sidebars containing a dozen: lunch ideas, must-have kitchen utensils, tips and tricks for healthy eating, ways to boost energy, ways to break a sweat and, well you get the idea. It is a little contrived, but the suggestions are good, if not necessarily super original.

There are some inspirational case studies included and, certainly, Denise at 53 is a good advertisement for her own methods, fit and glowing with health and energy.

The book subtitle claims you can lose up to 12 pounds in 2 weeks. That kind of annoys me, because you can't lose that much actual fat in that amount of time. This is a low calorie diet and exercise program, so not much new there, but if you don't have a lot of time to devote to getting in shape, this book will provide you with explicit exercises (fully illustrated for visual learners), nutritionally balanced menus and shopping lists to follow. If you tend to rebel against that sort of thing, you may still enjoy using some of the information.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to people looking for a specific plan for losing a few pounds and kick starting a healthy lifestyle.

Ok, so growing up athletic through highschool and then after heading off to college the weight slowly crept on. Not so bad, but now at 35 and for the last 10 years or so I have been considered pleasantly plump! Yes, I need to lose weight, a lot, and that being said I don't have time or so I claim. But 12 minutes a day? Yes, I can say with all honestly I do and was thrilled to find out that is all I needed for Denise's Daily Dozen was to follow her 7 day meal plan, 12 exercises and 12 minutes. I was determined to do it and so far I love it. This is no crazy diet that you are starving by noon on day 1! I haven't felt hungry at all and although my body is sore (lack of muscle tone will do that to you), I am already starting to feel a tightness in my bum and stomach. Which are my HUGE problem areas. There are 7 Chapter and each is spread out for 7 days, so there is no thinking (my kind of fitness/meal plan). Tell me what to do and I will follow. Denise guides you step by step! A can't lose!

Despite the low star rating, this isn't an absolutely horrible book. It's just.... ummmm... I'm trying to be nice - I think it's for people who have never watched a health show or thought about their health or fitness in anyway whatsoever.

It's a little misleading. It's not easy at all. It's a well balanced diet that requires you to not cheat by drinking alcohol, eating more portions than you ought to, or having sweets. If it were that easy to not do any of that stuff - we wouldn't need this book! That being said, this book divides everything up and breaks it down so a person doesn't have to think. And by breaking it down into little pieces it is probably a lot more manageable and easy to follow.

And if you can follow every thing in this book, you will most likely lose weight. She's right about that.

I am now 41 years old and as I reflect on my life I can honestly say I have always been an active person. I have not ever been overweight, but I have definitely gone up a few sizes over the last twenty years. I remember reading some other diet books in the past and not even being able to read halfway through them because I knew that I would never be able to follow the diet plans. Denise Austin is such a great motivator that after reading the first couple of chapters I found myself wanting to read more and feeling better about myself before I even did the first exercise!

I love how within this book Denise Austin breaks everything down into groups of a dozen. From your daily dozen exercises to your daily dozen foods, she makes it a very easy program to follow. The only item that I am truly struggling with is besides completing your daily dozen exercises you should also put in twelve miles of a cardiovascular activity. I'm probably lucky if I can get six miles in! But I'm not throwing in the towel and giving up. That's another thing that I like about her attitude. She realizes that we are all human and we are not going to fill our exercise and diet obligations at all times. Sometimes life does get in the way of our plans and we just need to accept that and move on.

Ok, I will admit that the diet aspect is another part that I don't follow to a tee. As I first said, I have never really been overweight so I guess I have never really been ambitious about dieting in general. But the way she breaks down what your diet should include has been very helpful. I have always known the importance of trying to have a good breakfast but that is something that I just told myself that I don't have time for. She has helped me to change this attitude so now I find that I can prepare my breakfast at home and just bring it with me in the morning to eat in my office. It only slows me down a little bit in the morning, but I have noticed that my mornings are much more productive and I'm not quite as hungry as it gets closer to lunchtime.

I know that I won't be losing twelve pounds in two weeks, because as I mentioned I am not following the diet plan in her book as closely as I should. But if I can lose a few pounds before I go to Mexico in a couple of weeks I will be a happy camper. Besides losing a few pounds I am hoping to instill some good diet and exercise habits that I can use for the rest of my life. Denise is a busy working mother just like I am and I'm hoping that I will be lucky enough to look half as good as she does ten years from now if I can keep following her program. If you are looking to start a diet and exercise program that will help you see results without drastic changes in your lifestyle then I would suggest picking up this book today.

This is, BY FAR, the BEST exercise book I have ever read. I should premise by saying that I didn't read it because I need to lose weight. I'm supposedly actually underweight. My interest in this book came from the fact that I NEED to start exercising, and I was hoping for a book that would motivate me and give me some tips.

This book did so much more than that. The focus was so much more on healthy living and healthy eating than to help you to lose weight than on diets or over-exercising to lose weight. It gives you healthy, balanced (and, unfortunately, not vegan) meal plans and exercise plans every day for three straight weeks, making following the Daily Dozen plan as easy as possible.

Having the exact exercises to do there in front of me made things so easy. I didn't have to think about which ones to do and the order in which to do them and for how long to do them. Denise did that for me. And with her bubble personality shining through on every page, I find myself excited to get up and exercise in the mornings. I have been exercising EVERY SINGLE DAY for the past two weeks (this is BIG for me, you guys!)

More importantly than that, I can already see a change. My arm and leg muscles are both starting to show more definition; I can actually feel my abs for once. And I have energy to do all of the mini exercises throughout the day that she calls Fidget-Cisers. It's just plain awesome.

Denise's Daily Dozen is full of practical tips and easy, step-by-step insructions as to how to lead a healthy life. They're so easy, and she's so upbeat about giving them to you, that you can't help but want to follow! Her system is a way of life, and she has given you enough to have step-by-step instructions for every day of that new way of life for as long as it takes for you to no longer need them.
This book is golden (even if I haven't used the non-vegan friendly meal plans at all), and I'm planning on buying a Daily Dozen CD when I really feel like I need new exercises.

I found this to be a very interesting exercise/diet/lose-weight book. I have loved Denise Austin since I did my first workout video with her in 1998, so I was excited to try out this book. I have always thought she had sound advice and good workouts and have continued to buy her workout videos to this day. Not to mention that the woman looks amazing.

Denise's Daily Dozen is full of exercises, meal plans, general tips and lots of inspiration. I found the exercises well-described and the exercise plans fun and interesting. I am still trying the program out but I very much enjoyed reading the book. Getting Denise's insights and success stories from other people were other highlights of the book to me. I look forward to continue following the exercise plan as it works well for the time and equipment I have available at this time. I am still on recovery and found the exercise plan great for now and when I am fully recovered.

The meal plans, recipes and eating part of the book appear to be very sound thinking - this is no crazy diet to try. Denise seems well-grounded in real life and the food sounds good without being too fussy.

Overall I see this as a great start the new year (or any time) diet/exercise/lifestyle plan. Nothing crazy here - just fun exercises and great advice.

I really like this book. It has a bunch of short exercises in it. The point is to do a different one each day which gives variety and makes it easy to follow. I haven't yet tried making the recipes but i want too. The exercises all consist of simple moves and you use weights with some of them. Though the moves are simple, they really do work! I have been sweating up a storm doing these exercises and I have really been feeling the burn. My legs are sore from leg exercises I did two days ago. The book is written in a really up-beat tone, and I like that. Denise even shows simple moves you can do in the kitchen, at work, etc whenever you have a few minutes of time so that way you can stay involved.

I like Denise's practical positive approach. The workouts are nothing new, mostly covered in the three workouts I already use, including Ten-Minute Trainer, Pilates, and a small-weights lifting program. However she gives lots of inspiration, great nutritional information with recipes and daily meal plans, and also encourages working little spurts through the day to boost energy and calorie burn. I will refer back to this book for the recipes and workout details.

Sound advice, excellent tips and fantastic instructions. My only complaint is the 3 week menu plan has calories which are too low for men and women. I doubled checked witht the website, which allotted hundreds more calories a day to lose weight for both women and men. Otherwise, I fantastic resource.

Denise Austin is sharing her secrets with readers everywhere. She has an easy strategy that will allow you to loose 12 pounds in 12 days by doing 12 exercises for 12 minutes a day. They are very simple to do. If I can do them, anyone can do them. She also includes a seven day meal plan that with recipes.

If your New Year's Resolution was to get healthy, I recommend DENISE'S DAILY DOZEN.

I enjoyed this book which was divided into sections featuring recipes, exercise photos, personal stories and very helpful tips about shopping, meal prep, etc. The Daily Dozen theme was carried throughout the book and included various types of foods to eat: protein, fiber, fruits, vegetables. A nice addition to your bookshelf at home (cookbooks and health books).

Can you believe she's 52?! Love that she hits so many different muscle groups in 12 minutes of exercise per day. The food plan would be hard to follow, but some of the recipes look good. Worth having for the upbeat encouragement and the exercise plan.

Denise has some basic, moderate, easy to follow eating and exercise ideas. There is nothing revolutionary, but that's not how it really works anyway. She is very much about making healthy eating and exercise a part of your life, not a fad diet, and her approach is reasonable and not extreme.
