Interesting to see how motherhood has been positioned for the last 200 years and the implications for feminism and women’s rights.

Contrary to the common conception that feminsim = liberal, this is actually not a liberal book and has nothing to do with feminism or making a point about motherhood. It's actually the history of motherhood in the US mainly, including popular trends in mothering between different ethnicities and socioeconomic classes. I thought it was really interesting to see the history behind some of today's popular parenting/mothering issues and especially to see how "normal" is constantly changing and reall ...more

A good overview of the ways in which feminism has advocated on behalf of mothers and other ways that feminism and 'caring work' intersect. Really helpful to see how so much of what we consider to be good mothering is culturally determined. And how our views of 'working' mothers have changed over the last 150 years or so.

I have given it three stars because if you have some familiarity with feminist theory then most of this will not be new to you. ALso, while it is well supported and fairly unbia

An excellent, broad, and concise overview of how feminism has interacted with motherhood, mothering, and related experiences/concepts/issues/roles. Kinser takes a feminist and historical approach, leading readers chronologically from the 1800s through the present day of the book's 2010 publication. It's funny (and kind of sad) how may of the big websites she discusses no longer exist four years later!

This was a great overview of how motherhood has evolved, naturally and forcibly, over the course of U.S. history while interweaving feminist history. Yes, this book deals with how feminist are mother movements? How receptive have feminists been to mothering issues? I could totally teach a class based on this book. Hmm...

My primary complaint would be that this book
does not focus on mothers' direct experiences. A bit of an academic bubble.

Pretty basic overview of feminism and motherhood. A good place to start in the topic, with useful ideas of how to get involved.
A solid survey of American feminism through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with an emphasis on feminist views and activism regarding motherhood.
