Eli Conners expected hired mercenary Ray Vereker to be a tank of a guy with forty tattoos--not a gorgeous creature with considerable karate skills. While Eli certainly needs Ray's help, he thinks she could use a little of what he's offering...a down-and-dirty, body-scorching passion of the forever kind. Ray's as good as any man when it comes to storming enemy compounds and ...more

I really enjoy Lori Foster's Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor and Love Undercover series, so I was super excited for a chance at one of her backlist. This one is slightly different than her others, though.

When Eli Connors needs to get his brother back after he was kidnapped for ransom in Central America, the agency he contacts that specializes in mercenaries sends him the meanest and the best soldier they’ve got. Ray Verekner.

What Eli doesn’t know is that Ra

Girl Rambo meets Boy Executive. Ray is a female mercenary hired by Eli to rescue his brother from a band of South American guerillas. Eli is skeptical of Ray's abilities when they meet until she lays two drunks out for him. This girl has some moves. Eli is instantly attracted and so is Ray, which is a big problem for her. She starts breaking her rules: she never gets involved with a client and she always works alone. Eli makes her want him and he insists on accompanying her on the rescue.

Eli Connor's brother is kidnapped and he hires Ray Vereker to find him and rescue him. Only instead of a man, Ray is a woman and an attractive one at that. They head out to Central America to rescue the brother and things get a little hot.

This book by Lori Foster, one of my favorite Romance authors, is not a favorite. It wasn't bad but it didn't grab me like many of her books do. It had all the right elements and should have worked for me. I didn't hate it, though. It had some good scenes and qu

★★★★ One of my favorite Lori Foster’s; a nice, quick read. Ray Vereker is a hired mercenary who makes the mistake of agreeing to take Eli Conners along with her to rescue his younger half-brother, Jeremy, a photography student, out of Central America. Not much birth control available in the jungle and this tough Rambo-ette ends up knocked up by her client; the tone of the book changes slightly then, but it’s still a fun read to see if she, her younger brother, Matt, and her dog, Precious, can mi ...more

This was a very light, chick-lit type book...not that there is anything wrong with that, I've just found myself wandering past those types of books. Lately I've been reading some really dark, depressing types books and I thought I would change it up a bit and throw in this light read just for fun. I'll admit that there were a few parts that I literally laughed out load but mainly I just flew right through it unentertained. Apparently I've moved on from these types of books and didn't even realiz ...more

As with most Lori Foster books the flow of the story moves along at a nice pace, I usually can pick up one of her books and read it thru. Maybe because it was an older publication (2003)I have some criticisms however I have to point out her writing has evolved over the years and gotten better of course. I'm enjoying reading about the controversy over her new book " My Man Michael" . People love or hate but they're buying and talking about it! It's on my wish list to buy eventually but since it's ...more

I really enjoyed this book. The banter between Eli, and Ray kept me laughing throughout the story. Eli needed a guide to help him navigate the jungles of Central America. His kid brother has gotten in trouble and ended up as a prisoner. It was up to Eli to rescue him. Eli contacted a agency, and asked for the meanest, mercenary that the agency had. He was shocked, when he met Ray for the first time in a smoke filled bar. Ray was a woman. She was not just any woman. With her skill set, she could ...more
What a waste of potentially good and strong female character. Unfortunately, the supposedly strong and independent heroine became a double-minded mess after she had s3x with the hero. She says one thing just to say she in commanding only to do the opposite after the hero coaxed her into his thinking which made the heroine to my way of thinking as full of bluster with no force behind. Add her over the top insecurities and the fact that the heroes family had to convinced her with praises and bribe ...more

After reading "Saving Brian" and not quite liking it, I gave Foster a second chance as most of the reviews said it did not seem like her typical work. They were wrong! "Unexpected" had the same eye roll moments, where the main character is so unrealistic, the plot predictable and humor is far and few between. Foster is good at coming up with fresh and original story lines (although unrealistic) and a definite pro at writing sexual scenes. It's your modern day Harlequin romance novel so if that i ...more
This was a great, entertaining story. Loved the hero and his relentless but gentle way to make the heroine fall in love with him. Loved the heroine - a nice surprise- and her actions and reactions, especially her feelings about her pregnancy.
HERO is a Leader, assertive, sexy, who hires a guide/bodyguard to rescue his kidnapped brother. The bodyguard is a tough woman, tomboy, a loner, very different to any woman he's ever met and he sets out to make her see they belong together.
A fun, steamy story but a little on the superficial side. Some of the issues the characters had could have been explored a little better.

Good light reading, but by far not one of my favorites from Foster.

I'm calling it quits on this one. I just couldn't get interested. Which is surprising since Lori Foster is one of my all time favorite romance authors. Don't worry though, I won't let this cloud my judgement for any future Foster reads.

Eli and Ray meet when he hires a mercenary (her) to help rescue his brother in South America. The two rescue the brother and become lovers and Ray unexpected becomes pregnant and sick. Several weeks after their return, Eli finally locates Ray and her brother and persuades them to give his family a try.

Eventually, they do work it out and agree to marry. Ok book.

Lori Foster writes it all

If it's a story by LF, it doesn't matter what the genre is... I'll buy it. I'll read it. I'll really, really like it. This one has a KICKASS heroine and a hot guy, of course. And as usual the writing is top-notch.
Unexpected flows at a good pace. There is a good depth to the level of emotion, and the sex is bouncy. Really great read.

This was the first Lori Foster book I read, and also the oldest. I have read some of her more recent work and am glad to say her writing has greatly improved. Or maybe she got a better editor, but whatever it is, the writing in Unexpected stinks. As do the character development and plot.

Eli Conners hires Ray Vereker from some mysterious agency after his brother is kidnapped in Central America. Apparently, she's the best they've got. She's in semi-retirement, but needs a big paycheck, even thoug
3.3 Stars. Public Library 6/1/15. I liked the story idea but didn't care for the attitude of the characters. It's hard to make a girl tough yet vulnerable at the same time especially if she is a mercenary saving people. Ray our lovely h missed her mark as kick-ass yet vulnerable instead she came off as cocky and moody. Eli our H is wealthy yet tough and extremely bossy for someone who needed to hire a mercenary. It's hard to come off as alpha male when you have to hire a professional to help sav ...more

Found at a used bookstore, the blurb on this + knowing I've liked a few of this author's books + needing some contemporary reading = win.

Unfortunately, the book was a total and utter fail. The set up takes 3/4 of the book, so what you're left with is a poorly put together boring "rescue" and then a "oh I'm pregnant. Let's deal with all my insecurities". It was bizarre to me that the cover material was what happened at end of book.

The heroine of our tale has "special skills" that nobody believe

I thought I'd like this more because Ray was meant to be a tough mercenary. Whilst she did come across as if she could have been that character the story never really gave her the opportunity to truly shine without Eli playing the "you're my woman" card and trying to drag her out of danger. It got a bit annoying that he wouldn't just let her do the job he'd hired her to do because he found her attractive.

I was also not impressed that the set-up and rescue took 3/4ths of the novel and

I don't even know where to start...but here goes. The book at a ton of potential. Female, kick-ass, mercenary hired by attractive businessman to save his brother in the jungle? I am there!! Ray seemed like the kind of heroine I could get behind - she sized up the opponent, enjoyed handing out beatings, and was doing all this to help her little brother pay for college - and then she met Eli and lost her damn mind. She was dumb in love. Literally, and idiot. I lost all respect for her the minute s ...more

Eli Conners expected hired mercenary Ray Vereker to be a tank of a guy with forty tattoos—not the feminine ideal with lethal combat skills. While Eli certainly needs Ray's help, the rest of him is thinking he might have something to offer her. . .

Ray's as good as any man when it comes to storming enemy compounds and loading an AK-47, but who could blame a girl for succumbing to mind-blowing temptation in the steamy jungle? But now it's back to business. If only Ray wasn't feeling hot, bothered,

Welp, I love me a kick-a** heroine and you can't more kick-a** than a mercenary. The hero was just as tough and in the first half of this book, the two seemed to be evenly matched. But once their mission was over, all of a sudden it became necessary to "womanize" the heroine. And by that, I mean, make her submissive (not the BDSM kind) so that the hero wouldn't appear to be a wimp. This didn't sit well with me. A real man doesn't make it a life goal to wrestle control from a woman just because s ...more

This was an enjoyable Foster book, if a little average. I’m not sure why, but it didn’t have quite the spark as some of her other ones.

I liked the characters, Eli and Ray worked well together, and I liked his persistence with her. I enjoyed the other characters, as well; Buddy, and Eli’s brother, and Eli’s grandparents were great. The second half, when Ray was pregnant, was very good.

While I enjoyed most of these things, the spark between Eli and Ray was just not as intense, and the writing

I think the book was more than average in certain points and just about average in other areas.
The plot was actually the most average part, I think.
It could have been a lot lot better, it had so much potential. But somehow Lori Foster did not use the full potential of it.
The characters were pretty good.
I am in love with Eli. I have a new book boyfriend. Enough said.
About Ray. She was good. Pretty kickass. The only problem was that I felt in the most part of the book, she was just trying to prove

Not physically buy emotionally. he was able to be her Yin to his Yang.
