Richard Watson (born 1961) is an English author, lecturer and futurist known for his 2007 book Future Files: a Brief History of The Next 50 Years and for his infographics, especially his Trends & Technology Timeline 2010-2050 and the Timeline of Emerging Science and Technology 2015-2030.

He has written 5 books about the future and is the founder of What’s Next, a website that documents global trends. He has been a blogger on innovation for Fast Company Magazine and has written about creativity, innovation, and future thinking for a variety of publications including Future Orientation (Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies) and What Matters (McKinsey & Company). He is a proponent of scenario planning and an advocate of preferred futures, believing it is incumbent upon organisations to create compelling visions of the future and work towards their realisation.

In addition to writing, Watson works with the Technology Foresight Practice at Imperial College London and Lectures at London Business School and the King's Fund. He is also a network member of Stratforma and has worked with the Strategic Trends Unit at the UK Ministry of Defence, the RAND Corporation, CSIRO, the Cabinet Office and the Departments of Education in the UK and Australia.

كتاب مشوق و مهم في مواضيعه, يضعنا فيه المؤلف في سيناريوهات لا ترقى للدرجة الفانتازية, و لكن يدعنا على أرض الواقع في رؤيته للمستقبل, ليس كتاب تنبؤي بقدر ما هو كتاب رؤيوي للمستقبل, نجد عدة إتجاهات ستتحكم في.واقعنا مستقبلا و يفصل المؤلف هذه الإتجاهات تبعا لنوعها إما العلمي, أو الإقتصادي, أو السياسي, أو الصحي إلخ, كتاب ممتع في المجمل, لن أفصل كثيرا في تلخيصه, و لكن أنصح بقرائته بشدة.

Accessible manual of near-future trends

In this bold, entertaining book, futurist Richard Watson reports the results of decades of thought about the future. He identifies more than 200 separate trends, which he helpfully winnows down into five overarching themes illustrated with real-world and hypothetical examples. His breezy style weaves these themes into the major areas of life: work, finances, politics, science, health care and entertainment, among others. Watson’s vision of the future covers all aspects – literally everything from taking baths to artificial intelligence – and the sweep of his ambition is impressive. He augments his text with good graphics, some perhaps tongue-in-cheek (his “Extinction Timeline” has Belgium biting the bullet around 2049). The book’s one weakness is that, while Watson tells readers what will happen in the future, he doesn’t always explain why. This caveat aside, getAbstract recommends this engaging book to leaders, innovators and all those interested in the future.

ملفات المستقبل موجز في تاريخ السنوات الخمسين المقبلة، لمؤلفه رتشارد واتسون وترجمة عمر الأيوبي، حصلت على الكتاب من الناشر هيئة أبوظبي للسياحة والثقافة مشروع (كلمة).

كتاب ملفات المستقبل هو استشرافه وتوقع ما سيكون في السنوات الخمسين المقبلة، قال المؤلف "سترون أشياء مألوفة من منظور جديد وأشياء غير مألوفة بوضوح أشد".

والعجيب في الموضوع أن أغلب ما توقعه هو متحقق حاليا وتكنولوجيا، فقد قام بتأليف الكتاب سنة ٢٠٠٧ م وتم نشره في طبعته الأولى ٢٠١٢ م وأتممت قراءته في نهاية العام المنصرم ٢٠١٤ م لذا الأمر جدا مهم قبل قراءة أي كتاب معرفة تاريخ النشر.

مما يزيد شغف القارئ هو تعدد الإتجاهات المستقبلية فمثلا يتطرق الكاتب إلى اتجاهات ستحول المجتمع وأخرى ستحول وسائط الإعلام، والخدمات المالية، والمركبات الآلية والمواصلات، والطعام والشراب، والتسوق، والحكومة والسياسة، والرعاية الصحية واتجاهات أخرى كالسفر والسياحة فقد يقال لك عند سفرك "نأسف .. البلد كامل العدد!!".

الكاتب تناول الموضوع من اتجاهات وسلوك المجتمعات والناس قائلا: حكمة الجماهير أعظم دائما من ذكاء الفرد، وقد برر المؤلف سبب اختياره الخمسين سنة القادمة حيث قال "أنها بعيدة بالقدر الكافي لتجنب الإتهامات بالخطأ" فالبعيد أسهل من توقع القريب كالسنة القادمة أو الثلاث فعندها تنتهي صلاحية الكتاب بانقضاء مدتها لذا الخمسين سنة فترة كافية وستكون العلاقة بين التكنولوجيا والناس ذات ارتباط وثيق فالأولى تتغير سريعا والناس ببطء وعلى الرغم من التغيرات والتحولات التي طرأت في وقتنا الحاضر إلا أن هناك حنين للماضي وهروب من الحاضر فحب الناس للجديد والسريع سيكون مجاورا لشغفهم للماضي.

كتاب مفيد واسلوب الترجمة والمؤلف سهل وبسيط مبتعدا عن التعقيد والتفصيل الممل فتنتقل في قراءتك من موضوع إلى آخر مدركا العالم من حولك ومقارنا لما هو موجود وما سيأتي لاحقا.

This title intrigued me: "The 5 trends that will shape the next 50 years". If you can get past the wiz-bang style of writing, it is actually a fun read. Not deep, but fun. Drawing from a number of predictive sources, as well as his own feverish brain, the author takes on every aspect of modern culture with often surpising and sometimes hilarious future forcasts. My only complaint is that his section on the future of business and work is, to me, so so wrong. I do not see the workplace or companies becoming kinder and gentler. If you want to read a non-stop brainstroming rant by a creative (but kinda out-there) guy, you would enjoy this book.

The book covers the usual suspects, trends you see today extended out to the next 50 years but with little critical analysis about how the trends interact with each other and even whether these trends might not collapse and transform. I find this book as an essential reference for how not to write futurology because it does not worry about internal contradictions or balance between the dystopic potential of existing trends. I see futurology as world creation of possibilities that are internally consistent and balanced, not one sided, fragile projections of what we see today, especially at a fifty year timescale.

This book is like Future shock 2.0 version, except Future shock is more stunning since it was written almost 50 years ago, and many things are happening. This book is not that much predicting actually, because the trends are actually pretty much obvious to see. Still, it will be a very entertaining book for those who never read any book about futurism. I think one big missing part is still about space program. We humans are doomed to stay on earth, we need to explore to beyond earth, even if just live as vacation on earth orbit. I think the space program is actually on the go thanks to someone like Elon Musk, we get to dare to dream big!!
I would like to see this happen in my life time....As for how human beings live on earth, it seems not so much excitement for me at least!

و لكن بشكل عام الكتاب عبارة عن عمل صحفي حقيقي real journalism و تقصي حقائق بشكل محترف ..
الكتاب من ٢٠٠٥ .. و لذلك قد يعتبره البعض منتهي الصلاحية في عالمنا المتسارع ..
المؤلف لديه نظرة ثاقبة اتجاه مسارات تطور الحياة و الكثير من توقعاته اشاهدها قد تحققت بعد ١٥ سنة من تاريخ الكتاب ..

للكاتب بعض الندوات التي يعرض فيها أفكاره على شكل خريطة عمل و خريطة ذهنية للاتجاهات السبع .. انصح بها ..

Impresionante!! Una gran cantidad de información e hipótesis sobre como será el mundo en 50 años. Estamos en medio de una época de grandes cambios, necesidades masivas, buscamos la comodidad e inmediatez.. Estamos plenty en deudas y dentro de algunos años los chismes del pueblo serán si tal o cual planea tener un bebe con un robot. Los jóvenes de ahora difícilmente podremos dar a nuestros hijos la vida y status que nos dieron nuestros padres.
Las compañías aseguradoras se verán en problemas si se concretan eventos que hoy son solo amenazas (guerra, desastres naturales). sentiremos nostalgia por los old days y las relaciones giraran en torno a redes sociales. Necesitaremos más a Dios para sobrevivir en el estilo de vida o, en el "peor/mejor de los casos, la tecnología misma será Dios" Perderemos intimidad, todos seremos famosos, estaremos llenos de información y repetiremos los mismos miedos. El futuro llegará antes a sociedades urbanas y grandes ciudades y algunas otras comunidades aún tardarán en ver..." La llegada del futuro" .....

As the title would indicate, this is a book about predictions for the next 50 years.

Normally I love to read prediction books. I am always intrigued about what people think will happen. But this book couldn't hold my attention. There was just too much crammed in the book.

The book starts with a description of the 5 most important trends. I think that if the book had taken those 5 and simply expanded on them, it would have been easier to read, and more interesting. Instead, the book goes into 11 different areas with 5 top trends each, and many more details.

The book ends with a list of 5 things that wouldn't change over the next 50 years. This list was also interesting, however very little time was spent on it.

Overall, I found the book had too great a range. There was just too much information to able to absorb much of anything.

This is a fast paced book written by a futurologist, who looks at the social trends that are shaping the future emails covered ageing, work, leisure, technology, lifestyles, and much more. Most interesting for me were the data he presented on trends over the last few years. I had noticed them but had not realised that they were global rather than local. Some of his predictions, given that the book was written 4 years ago, seem not to have happened, such as the global shortage of workers, but there is time. I note also that he mentions myspace but not Facebook. My complaint is that there were not enough figures and data supporting his comments. Also he started by singing the praise of maps but then had none in the book. I note he has written a further book -maybe that will have more visual aids to understanding.

Interesting and thought-provoking book. Despite it's name, it's not only about 5 most significant trends (ageing, power shift eastwards, global connectivity, GRIN technologies and the environment). Book describes also top 5 trends of society, technology, politics, media, financial services, food, shopping, etc.

If you want to know your past, look at your present conditions. If you want to know your future, look into your present actions. (Buddhist saying).

The book is very informative but overall too much details provide no excitement which bore me especially during the middle section of the book. Most of its perceptual ideas are backed up with evidence so if anyone is interested reading books that think of theories of the current world we live in should check it out!

This is a great insight into what the future COULD look like. Plenty of real examples, fictional ones and slightly oriented more towards pessimism.
But you don't get depressed by reading this book, nor paranoid, but you sure want to make the world a better place.

I think this is a good book about shape of the future. It is inevitable that global warming, increase on traveling, and increase on tax is change our lives. So I recommend this book for people who like to know what trend that can be happen in near future (10-50 years ahead).

Some very interesting individual ideas but my goodness this book dragged. Each chapter would make for a reasonable article on its own, although I'm not a fan of the school of future gazing where the author just throws up everything they've heard about rather than selecting the most likely.

This book does a really wide ranging look at the trends for the future. However I don't think the analysis of the trends is that good. In some cases what is reported as a trend is in fact somethjng the data suggests the opposite is occurring.
