The stories in this collection offer an excellent glimpse into the world of Magic the Gathering. Each story takes place in unique and detailed lands with fun and original plot lines. When compared to the previous MTG anthology (Tapestries), this book seems darker and more mature, with a greater level of depth to the storylines and characters. I enjoyed it much more, and look forward to reading the other anthologies.

As with most of the MTG books, prior knowledge about the game is not necessary to enjoy and understand the book.

Good and fairly memorable collection of stories. Some were too short and just filler, but the vast majority were quality pieces.

A solid fantasy anthology. Would give it 4.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half-stars. Leagues better than Tapestries.

Favorite: "Horn Dancer"

Great: "God Sins", "What Leaf Learned of Goblins", "Dual Loyalties", "Better Mousetrap", "Defender", The Old Way to Vacar Slab"

Good: "Festival of Sorrow", "Chef's Surprise", "Foulmere", "A Monstrous Duty", "The Face of the Enemy", "Shen Mage-Slayer"

Lame: "Insufficient Evidence", "Distant Armies"

It was a good compilation of stories from the early MTG sets but it was very disjointed. Some of the stories seemed like an after thought and were very short.
