At first I found the narrator's artless, conversational tone engaging. Then as the book dragged on ("progressed" would be inaccurate)I realized that there was nothing resembling a plot, just events following after each other with no dramatic tension or suspense. The love interest was blindingly obvious even for a chick-lit book. Also, the summaries of certain scenes(telling rather than showing) were amateurish and cliche-infested; they went like this: "They talked all night long. He realized tha ...more

When a night that was supposed to be filled with laughter and celebration ends in the tragic death of her boyfriend John, Emma wonders how she will get her life back on track. Emma has friends and family to rally round to help her with her grief though. Trouble is, they all have problems too and the tragic death of John hurts each and every one of them in different ways. There’s Sean, John’s best friend who’s struggling big time with his guilt/grief and ends up hitting the bottle; Clodagh, Emma’ ...more

A wonderful heart warming tale about death, grieving, love, friendship, family and all the ups and downs of life. Laugh out loud funny at times and tear invoking at others.
Anna McPartlin has a gift for telling stories and making you love the characters she creates.

As a habit, I tend to research a book before I read it. Nothing serious, but I like to look the reviews up on Goodreads or Amazon (for my Kindle). This book was recommended to me by my local book store & I thought it could be a nice, light read so I bought it. I read some of the Goodreads reviews and I didn’t really see any rave reviews of this book, which is understandable because it is chick-lit, after all. (No offense to chick-lit. I admit that I am a chick-lit reader…. go figure.) Anywa ...more

After a tough few days, this book was the perfect thing for me. It made me laugh (in public!) and it made me cry. A light read but with extreme depth in its subjects. I highly recommend it!

Anna Mcpartlin's novel is a very realistic interpretation of a person having to pull themselves out of the grip of grief. Emma looses her long time love John and is forced to start her life over again with the help of great friends who attempt to show her the great parts of life and then push her to let go and move on. This novel was interesting because rather than telling the story of a woman getting over something like this quickly, easily, and happily, McPartlin shows that the grieving proces ...more

I love this book. I keep rereading it, and I will be really sad when I put it back. The main character is Emma, and she lives with her longtime boyfriend, John. In the beginning of the book John is hit by a car and killed. After that the reader witnesses how people grieve after losing a loved one and the many different stages. John visits Emma in her dreams whenever something important or life changing happens to her, He acts like her guardian angel. I think Anna McPartlin Did an excellent job wi ...more

To be brief -

This book was about love, loss and growing past that bridge of grief into the waking world. The world with all of it's thorns is still beautiful and can only be appreciated by plucking it from the safe confines of it's natural resting place and experiencing both the beauty and the pain.

Emma has lost her boyfriend of many years. Her soul mate, her best friend and her lover. On the day of his death a lot happens and she can't reconcile the fact that she has not only lost him but is it

This book is horrible. It has no plot and was slow and pointless from the second chapter. There is absolutely no character development. And the writing is no good. I don't think the author has ever heard of complex sentences, or even sentences that are longer than five words. Much of the book was like this (and I'm paraphrasing):

We met up. We ate. We watched TV. We laughed.

You know, they do a lot of laughing but very little of the book is actually funny. And the author is or was a comedienne! If

When I got this particular book, at a yard sale.
I was thrilled, I love finding books so cheap.
I didn't think I'd fall in love with every character, and the author all in one sitting, but I did.

I was so captivated by reading it, I wanted to savor it, I put it down when it was getting good, which every end of the chapter had me guessing, but I didn't want the book to end.

I love Anna McPartlin.

I prepared myself for a dark book about loss and the journey that follows. I had picked up this book to read and then put it down before the first word just not ready to 'go there' yet. When I finally 'went there', I did find a story about loss and the journey that follows. I also found a story with many more dimensions... funny, touching, sweet, insightful and hopeful.

This book starts off with an unhappy ending and ends with a happy beginning.

I was almost suprised I liked this so much - perhaps I did because it was something I could almost relate to. I enjoyed the mix of characters - they lacked subtlety perhaps, but I liked them all. Some real humor - hopeful rather than despairing. A little predictable but it was easy to forgive. I just really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this wonderful novel about grief, loss, love and learning to live again. I loved the fact that I got to stay with the characters throughout a decent period of time, long enough to watch them find true lasting happiness and not just up to the happy ending. I look forward to reading more of this author.

Anna McPartlin is an Irish writer, and this is her first book. I thought it excellent; it kept my interest all the way. Even though at times the subject matter was not funny and rather tragic, this author has a keen sense of humor - as do so many of the Irish. I plan to seek her other books, as I really like her style.
