Raw, honest, deep, moving and personal.

What a stunning, dark, delicious, heartfelt collection of poetry.

I've never read a collection that has hit me like some of the poems in this book.

All have an air of total honesty and heart ache . You can absolutely feel I places where Melissa was at when she wrote them.

Some that stood out for me were

Beautiful, powerful poems. The author does a fantastic job with how she broke up the book into the various sections. Each heading, a flower representing the poems and topic within. I’m impressed with how every little thing is connected. She is able to make me feel so much from the very first poem and for me that’s something that’s not that easy to do as I’m usually not looking for poetry. But this author is definitely my style of poetry.

The Black Dahlia section hit me hard, but I made it through, picturing so much and wishing I didn’t. The poem Full disclosure reminded me of some of my own characters and what they’re going through. The Changing Tides took a beautiful turn. I completely related to Well Hello There and the Little Voice Inside Me Needs Reading Material. I think my favorite section was Iris: Hope and one of my favorites was Umbrella Recommended.

Her poems made me laugh, cry, hurt, love and feel like I’m not alone. I’m definitely looking forward to more of her work.

The Cost of Daydreams by Melissa Bergsma

"The Cost of Daydreams" by Melissa Bergsma is a captivating poetry collection that offers a thought-provoking journey through the realms of imagination and introspection.

With a rating of 4 stars, this book presents a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences that resonated deeply with me. Bergsma's evocative and eloquent verses skillfully transport readers to the landscapes of daydreams, where the complexities of life and the beauty of the human spirit are explored with sensitivity and insight.

Each poem is a masterful composition, offering a glimpse into the author's profound understanding of the human condition. While I found the collection to be truly engaging and beautifully written, there were moments when I wished for a bit more thematic cohesion.

Nevertheless, "The Cost of Daydreams" is a remarkable work that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on poetry enthusiasts and those who appreciate the art of introspective storytelling.

This was an easy and quick read for a collection of poetry written by Melissa B. I appreciate the variety of literary devices employed in her work rendering it both rhythmic and soulful. The stories were complex, often times melancholic, and highly reflective in its entirety.

I usually shy away from poetry as it can be overwhelming and daunting to read but was pleasantly surprised by the depth and how beautifully it was written. My favorite sections include Magnolia (nature), Cylamen (goodbye), Ixora (passion), and many others. Another fun favorite is the collection on humor & oddities which made for an informal and entertaining read. It covers a spectra of themes/emotions and the best part is the reader can start from anywhere inside the book.

With that said, this is an excellent collection of poetry that I most certainly will re-read. I look forward to devouring further writings from this author and it is without a doubt a 5/5. Love!

Just Wow. Im a huge poetry fan. I used it read it a lot often than i do now and i definitely missed it after reading this book.
You can feel the author’s journey through, pain and heartbreak, suffering, conquering, healing, love and all the things. The illustrations on the pages were beautiful, and haunting and just added SO much to the words in the pages. I related to a lot of these poems envisioning myself and situations I’ve been through reflecting. It was sort of comforting and made me feel like i wasn’t alone.
I feel like you don’t have to be into poetry to appreciate the words on these pages. And although they are separate poems they all flow to form a story. If you’ve wondered about poetry or thought about reading i highly recommend this one.
Thank you Melissa for sending me a copy to read and review.

Passionate, Raw - leaves you wanting more!

What a unique and stunning anthology this truly is!
Through a variety of arrangement and use of powerful and emotive vocabulary choice, Melissa simply pours her heart and feelings out in every poem written.
Her clever use of metaphor and creativity shines through in many poems.
My favourites were ‘Leave nothing unscathed’ because of the flow and use of beautiful imagery, ‘The architecture of us’ because of the clever use of figurative language and Anxiety is a powerful mistress’ as it is so relatable.
A beautiful anthology that I can truly recommend- I will be returning to read these poems again!

I really enjoyed The Cost of Daydreams. This book has over 90 poems, written in a variety of styles. The style overall reminded me of Emily Dickinson, my favorite poet! Plus, the lovely illustrations throughout the interior added to the reading experience. The poems were grouped into sections by flower and what that flower represents, i.e. Azalea for healing, Iris for hope, etc., which was interesting and helped tell a continuous emotional story across the whole book.

"The Cost of Daydreams" is a collection of poems that mesmerizes the reader with its vivid imagery and heartfelt emotions. Authored by a passionate writer who infuses her own experiences into the pages, this collection is a testament to the power of poetry to capture the essence of human existence.

From the very first poem, the reader is drawn into a world where dreams intertwine with reality, where emotions run deep, and where every word seems to resonate with the soul. One particular poem that stands out is "Anxiety’s a cruel mistress beneath the cypress." In this piece, the author bares her vulnerability, inviting readers to delve into the depths of her psyche. The imagery of being crumpled on sodden ground beneath the cypress tree paints a poignant picture of despair, yet amidst the darkness, there is a plea for companionship and solace. The lines, "will you settle beside me to shelter us while I shake from cold pull me back when I’m lost to fear and if my mind forsakes us remind me who we are," evoke a sense of longing and a yearning for reassurance that is both raw and powerful.

What sets this collection apart is the palpable sense of passion that permeates through the verses. It is clear that the author pours her heart and soul into every word, allowing readers to connect with her on a deeply personal level. There is an authenticity to her writing that is rare and refreshing, making "The Cost of Daydreams" a truly memorable read.

In conclusion, "The Cost of Daydreams" is a mesmerizing journey into the depths of the human experience. With its enchanting imagery, heartfelt emotions, and passionate prose, this collection is a testament to the power of poetry to move, inspire, and ultimately, to heal. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates the beauty of language and the profoundness of the human soul.
