Brister hearkens back to the seemingly forgotten exoticism of the Texas Gulf Coast and Mexico with a series of fictional outdoor stories that hold their own against those from more popular writers of his age. These tales provide a real sense of place and even though they may at times lean a bit to heavily on a stereotype or indulge a middle aged man's fantasies a little overmuch they are nonetheless still worthwhile. The best provide a hook out of nowhere and feature surprise endings that are quite uncommon in the field of outdoor literature. Highly recommended.
