Even though Bear is a bear and Honey is a bird, if when they feel bored or cross, they do something naughty and wish they hadn't had "good" ideas which don't always work out. Here are five tales which touch on such universal themes and predicaments as love, fear, responsibility and friendship.

Ursula Dubosarsky is an award-winning author of numerous books for children and young adults. About The Golden Day, her first book with Candlewick Press, she says, "The little girls watch, wonder, respond, change, and grow — and then their childhood is gone, forever. This element of the story, I suppose, is at least partly autobiographical. But, as I say — all of our teachers come home safe and sound in the end." Ursula Dubosarsky lives in Australia.

Beautifully written and illustrated book - another Dubosarsky book this one describing the unlikely friendship of a bird and a bear with a group of short stories, but they are done in a really interesting way, exploring the friendship, the times where there is unresolved tension and the need to get alone, and the things we do which have no reason and which we just don't explain, and they are not explained, and not judged, and not moralised, and the endings are not neat and pat and yet it is so affecting and even in the unresolved endings there is resolution. Perfect book for child and parent to read together.

I re-read this last night. I just love this genre. (see also Frog and Toad http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53... and also Snake and Lizard for a slightly more advanced version http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13... )

Dealing with themes of family and friendships, they are beautifully written in a deceptively simple style, wonderfully accessible, fun and engaging to read aloud to children, or for new readers to read for themselves. All of these three examples also happen to be gorgeously illustrated as well. ...Perfection!
