This collection was compiled and edited after Gleed's death in 1996 from lupus. The stories here include prize winners and nominees. They reflect the author's early life, as a Polish refugee living in Africa, England, and finally in Canada. Written with great compassion, Gleed enlists the reader's sympathy for her young female protagonists, showing us the privations and humiliations they must undergo as they adapt to an alien and unforgiving environment. A luminous collection by an author who died too soon.
