Not sure I read the same book as everyone else... This book was both predictable and confusing at the same time. It took me forever to figure out all of the connections and how they fit together. Maybe it was because I listened to the audiobook and didn't read it on the page. She did manage to surprise me a little bit, because I thought I had Emily's story all figured out and I didn't, but other than that, there weren't the twists I was expecting.
Lowell and Austyn have been dating for seven years and they are now engaged. He comes from a very wealthy family, and has just discovered his parents have died in an accident. The two go from Nashville to California for the funeral and to take care of arrangements. Once at the mansion, Austyn meets Lowell's two siblings: the hot brother Dallas and his married with kids sister Fallon. Then Austyn's college bestie Emily calls and says she's going through a divorce, and even though Austyn has not talked to her in over a year, Lowell says "hey, let's invite her to come stay here too." But things aren't as they seem, relationships aren't what they seem, and Austyn starts to doubt everything she thinks she knows.
So many things that happened here were just outside of my believability realm. I wanted to just go with the flow but the more bizarre things got, the more I just couldn't suspend the disbelief. When I got to the part at 90-ish percent in the woodshed my eyes rolled over and over. That was just...I can't even describe. These characters acted like no real people would ever act. I was picturing this segment as a movie and I literally laughed out loud at how ridiculous it was.
If you're looking for some mindless entertainment, then look no further than the prolific Kiersten Modglin. She certainly knows how to crank out the "out there" thrillers. I listened to the audiobook and like I said, the connections were kind of convoluted so this one would probably be better on the page.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
Actual Rating 2.5 Austyn has a successful bakery and a rich fiancée. But when Lowell’s parents unexpectedly die, they must travel to the Bass Estate to set the family’s affairs in order. The estate doesn’t feel welcoming, wrapped in traditions, secrets, and formality. Austyn feels like she’s not getting the whole story, especially when she overhears whispered conversations and discovers a secret journal. Does she actually know anything about the family she’s marrying into? And are these secrets as dangerous as they seem?
The premise of this work was interesting. I do enjoy family secrets, betrayals, and outsiders getting drawn into those affairs. However, this work didn’t quite do those tropes justice. It felt like the author had some interesting ideas but that they all stayed somewhat surface level. I never really became drawn into the secrets and reveals. This was partly because it was an intensely slow buildup and then everything happened so fast that there was no time to become immersed or invested.
The characters were not written well enough for me to become fully immersed in them or their lives, feeling one-dimensional and stereotypical. The sexual tension between the protagonist and one of the secondary characters felt like more of a convenient plot point and less of a true, realistic occurrence. I also disliked how the characters’ emotions/actions changed to forward the plot. When things were escalating towards the end, it was like a switch was flipped for several of them and they became completely different people. This didn’t feel realistic and added towards my lack of connection with the characters.
Overall, this read was somewhat entertaining and short, but was also predictable and lacking in some important areas. My thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this work. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I have read all of Modglin’s book, and it’s either a hit or miss for me. Moglin’s strength is the fast pace that never lets up, making you want to continue with just one more chapter.
Plot (excerpt from the Amazon description)

Late one night, Austyn overhears a whispered conversation, revealing she hasn’t been given the full truth about the world she’s marrying into. And when Emily, an old friend, calls with devastating news of her own, Lowell and Austyn invite her to join them for a visit at the estate.
Trapped inside the Bass estate under the ever-watchful eye of the staff and her soon-to-be family, Austyn makes another chilling discovery—something so terrible it changes everything.
With Modglin’s book you know you’re embarking on a trip where secrets will be revealed, and you itch to know what it will be. Austyn, our heroine, discovers a diary and you are introduced to Celine. We know something terrible has happened, but not exactly what. Modglin reveals just enough to keep you invested.
I would have loved to get to know some of the characters better, but it is a fast read so I wasn’t too bothered by it. When everything was revealed it was a bit hard to keep the facts in order for me. I was somewhat confused by some of the family connections.
Overall an enjoyable read!
Thanks for the audiobook version from netgalley and dreamscapes media
Lowell and Austyn move into his parents mansion after their suspicious death. The family is totally dysfunctional and there’s a lot of money and assets at stake. Family secrets are revealed. This was a pretty screwed up twisted read. I couldn’t hardly put it down.
Kiersten Modglin is one of those authors that writes in a way where you get lost in the story and you blink and it’s done and you’ve been reading for hours even if it’s felt like minutes. This book is no exception. Austyn has known and been with Lowell for years and while she knew he came from money she hasn’t met his family and is caught off guard when’s he goes to his family home with him after his parents die in an unexpected accident. The family home, The Pond, isn’t a house but more of a mansion or castle. As Austyn adjusts to the surprises that Lowell throws her way she also tries to learn more about his family and home. But of course there are secrets (this is a K-Mod book after all) and twists and turns that she never could have predicted.
This newly released book by Kiersten Modglin is a fun ride, with a good plot and interesting characters and settings. This author always brings forth good books. It was an enjoyable read. Good work!
Not sure what I just read. Not sure why I read it either. This book had a certain appeal, but unfortunately there were many things that could have been better.
The beginning was promising. In fact, a good chunk of the book was ok, if a bit bland. Sure, there were quite a few plot holes and things that didn't make much sense. But I thought it might be a good option for when you need just a light, brainless, easy read to cozy up with on a slow afternoon.
But at some point, you just have to get fed up with the characters, inconsistencies and plot holes.
And also, shall we talk about the super weird scene towards the end? On the second thought, let's not and just try to forget it ever happened.
On the other hand, there was an entertainment value I appreciated about this story as a whole. At least that was my experience with this book.
A huge thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for providing me with an audio arc of The Family Secret by Kiersten Modglin.
Kiersten Modglin outdid herself with this one! I finished this book in 2 days because I could not put it down. First of all, I love her writing style, like I have in all of her other books I’ve read. Second, the plot turned out to be so much more complex by the end than what I was expecting. Third, as the reader, I really became invested in Austyn and could feel her pain, anger, love, etc. The characters were easy to “get to know,” or at least how she wanted you to know them 😉. And lastly, the queen of twists really gives you an ending that you could not have guessed! This one was no exception to that. I was surprised and impressed by where she took this one. and the ending was suspenseful and had me turning the pages faster than I thought possible! This book has ALL the family drama, suspense, thrills, love, and heartbreak in under 300 pages. I’m giving this one 4.5 out of 5 stars, rounding up to 5 on goodreads!
The biggest thank you goes out to Kiersten Modglin for providing me with this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. I love being part of the KMod review team and always look forward to reading her work!
Austyn and Lowell are newly engaged and celebrating at a party when they get word that Lowell's parents have both (unexpectedly) died. They are being summoned home to his family's estate for the funeral and reading of the will.
Austyn soon learns houses have feelings... and families have secrets. And before long, she is embroiled in a life or death hunt for answers!
There's a reason Kiersten Modglin is a master of psychological thrillers! The suspense begins when you read the synopsis, continues to the first page, and then without realizing it, you've read the entire book because you couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
I was intrigued to see how Modglin portrayed the uber-wealthy and how all the characters would develop and grow amidst that backdrop. While there wasn't a lot of "growth" per se, there are enough solid five-star twists that ultimately produce a super-villain, that you can overlook the somewhat over-the-top turns!
This was my first book by Modglin outside of The Arrangement universe and I'm eager to see what else she's written that might be equally addictive and readable!
I wasn't expecting this to get so intense but those final chapters were nuts! This was a domestic drama that was easy to follow and had characters that drew you in, good or bad. I couldn't stop reading. Ugh, I love K.Mod!
Ahh a book about wealthy people and their scheming ways. That never gets old for me and when KMod writes the book it’s even better. When I settle in with one of her books I know I’m in good hands and will be getting ready to take a wild ride of some kind. You never know what to expect or exactly what you’re in for, but I always know I’ll be entertained and surprised. This book was no exception and it had me in its clutches from the start. There were some scenes towards the end that I never could’ve seen coming, so shocking but also so wickedly fun. Another fun read from the queen of the binge worthy thriller for sure!
This book was SO bad. How could other people have given this 4 and 5 stars? I mean, no judgement, but how?
And how is it possible for a book to be both completely predictable and ridiculously convoluted at the same time? Idk but the contradiction is alive and well with this one.
If the plotline wasn’t bad enough, the two naked people locked in a shed was just the most out there, what-the-actual-fuck-am-I-reading shit I have ever experienced.
Never again with KM. Never.

4.5⭐️ Kiersten Modeglin’s writing flows so brilliantly and is extremely easy to follow, making her books the most bingeable, quick reads. Grabbing my attention from the very first sentence, I literally could not put this book down until I finished it. Offering major Daisy Darker/The Family Game Vibes, along with some impressive twisty twists, this is one you don’t want to miss.
Austyn’s fiance Lowell’s parents just died suddenly. They head to his family’s estate and she meets his siblings for the first time. While there, Austyn learns of an estate staff’s child who died at 17. She finds the girl’s journal and learns a horrifying secret about Lowell’s father. She keeps digging and digging, not heeding the warnings to stop. We find out what the family is really like the last third of the book. There were some outrageous twists and turns, but I wanted to keep reading to find out exactly how it ended! This book will make you wonder what the uber rich are really like behind closed doors.
Ridiculous fun. It’s all telegraphed obviously, and gets very treacly in the end.
Austyn (oh the names in this one 🤣) is engaged to LOWell ( 🙄) who is from some super mega rich family , & find out his parents have died. How? ODs. They have major drug habits. (Later we find out they were murdered! By another son, Dallas! Yes, Austyn … & Dallas). Anyway they have to go To the Family Home called The Pond (bc it’s full of Bass) for the funerals & will reading. While there we meet the sister Fallon.
Austyn discovers a hidden diary & Nancy Drew’s around trying to find out what happened to its author, a young girl who worked at the pond named Celine.
Lowell freaks out - bc Celine is the Family Secret! She was a maid & had an affair with Lowell’s grandfather Simon then died! Did he kill her?? NO
We then find out Celine & Simon killed his wife Sophia & Celine stole her identify, & they sent Sophia’s daughter to her bio dads family claiming she wanted no ties to her old life.
Problem is…the Bass line was matrilineal, thru Sophia! Lowell & his siblings are descended from imposter Celine! And that’s where Austyns friend Erin comes in & this is exhausting.
Erin is actually descended from Sophia, she’s a true Bass. Lowell was paying her off to keep quiet, and his parents wanted to kill her which is why Dallas murders them.
It all comes to a head when Lowell goes crazy, tries to kill Austyn & Dallas by burning down a shed they were locked in…naked…while Lowell threatened them to have sex ;??! It’s weird. But then Fallon shows up & saves the day, murders Lowell, bc Dallas had secretly called her & she heard everything Lowell did.
Then, happily ever after epilogue.I should add this isn’t everything. There’s also a fake divorce, a pregnancy, a diamond studded hairbrush just filled with DNA, sex scenes, eye*ucking your fiancés brother, and ostentatious house descriptions. Rich people, amiright?

The story centers around a newly engaged couple Austyn Murphy and Lowell Bass. Lowell receives the news that both of his parents passed away and he must travel to his childhood home to handle the estate.
Austyn is surprised to learn that her fiancé’s childhood home is a mansion called the Pond. Soon after her arrival, she discovers that Lowell has inherited the Pond and wants the couple to permanently live there but Austyn just isn’t happy there and doesn’t feel at home.
Austyn receives a phone call from her best friend Emily with news that she is going through a divorce so Austyn invites her to stay with them at the Pond. Soon after Emily’s arrival, secrets are revealed and Austyn regrets ever stepping inside the Pond.
Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me. However I can also see a lot of readers enjoying this one.
As I’ve stated before, take my reviews with a grain of salt. We all like different things, and just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean you won’t love it. I would hate to know that I talked someone out of reading a book that you may enjoy just because the book didn’t work for me.
Many thanks to Libro.FM., and Dreamscape Media for the gifted copy.

“Tell me all your secrets.”
Austyn just learned that her fiancé's parents died. So, of course, they travel to his family home. It’s her first time meeting the Bass siblings, her first time entering the house. And all she can feel is the weight of its secrets.
OKAY KIERSTEN. This is a one-stop read. You won’t be able to put it down once you start- it’s that good.
I enjoyed how this story was told. The emotional elements were so deep and genuine. The weight of grief is palpable, and it okayed such a big part in this story.
I found the way this story was told interesting. I could feel the anxiety, panic, and fear Austyn was experiencing the deeper she fell into this plot.
I loved the concept of houses telling stories, and I loved seeing this house as a character. It was very creative. I also loved the idea of memory and how much our memories are based on what we are told.
Photographs help, as they did in this book. A picture is worth a thousand words. No more valid words have ever been uttered. This was a pulse-pounding thrill ride from start to finish.
What I would love to see next is the backstory. Celine’s story. Because there is a lot more hiding in The Pond.
No. Nope. Not for me. Whatever brain cells I’ve got left after 2 kids and endless sleepless nights, well, I’m pretty sure I’ve killed at least a dozen of them trying to get through this book. And they were screaming in agony.
I can see how this book can be enjoyed for the sheer mindless entertainment value of it, by someone who can take things at face value without ever questioning the character’s behaviour or nonsensical plot developments. This book is one of the super far-out-there variety, so if you’re able to read it without taking it too seriously (just for the heck of it, you know? Kind of like watching the Bachelor or something similarly brainless), you might appreciate the quick, twisty ride. But if you’re going into this expecting a well plotted thriller with any sort of logic to it, put the book down and back away slowly.
I don’t know what to tell you about the plot line, somehow the author managed to make it both convoluted and infuriatingly predictable (my eyeballs are still hurting). I can’t tell you what the point of the story was either, but I can tell you it was chock full of cringy moments and characters acting like no human being ever would. I actually like stories that err on the side of quirky and wild (How to Sell a Haunted House is a good example of that, or even Behind Her Eyes), but I don’t like it when the plot is so cheesy, it crossed over into the ridiculous realm and leaves you shuddering with the ickiness and second-hand embarrassment.
I kind of get the feeling that this is the author’s deal tho, and she writes true to her style, so I’m sure her usual readership will enjoy this book still. And that is awesome, to each their own! Reading is a subjective and very personal experience, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
KM’s books have a way of making me feel nervous, anticipating dread, and always something spectacularly crazy, horrifying or just fill in the blank around the corner, and this novel as jut that. KM is my go to for crazy entertainment because she writes so well. I don’t think I can think of another author that delivers great books so quickly. I hope someday to have conversation with her about how she thinks. Great audiobook and loved the narrator. She delivered! Afterthoughts • pulled me right in • made me doubted everyone • shocked (again) • helped me get thru my day Im only rating this one a 3 ⭐️ because it went off the rails for me just at the end and I had trouble with the ending. But I have to say I still enjoyed the heck out if it! You’re awesome Kiersten and I love your work. Thanks Dreamscape Media via NetGalley.
Austin’s fiancé Lowell brings her home to his wealthy family’s mansion after being informed his parents were killed in an accident. Or was it an accident?
My first book by this author and the narrator did a great job voicing the characters. Lots of twists and turns, though it’s very far fetched.
I've read quite a few "looking back in time through a found journal" mysteries in the past year, and am wondering if this is going to be a thing for a while now. I hope not, because while it might be a useful tool for the author, it can often be a tiresome thing for a reader. An author creating a "found diary" so that it unfolds exactly what and when it needs to, while still sounding genuine, is something I have yet to find, not even here.
I love Kiersten Modglin's novels, because they are always fast, compelling and hold my interest. That is true with The Family Secret, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story, even with the found journal driving the mystery. Did the twists and turns get outrageous at times, completely dispelling my immersion in the drama? Sure, but I like riding that rollercoaster, even if it tosses me out sometimes. I'm here for the thrill, not necessarily the believability.

Given that I am 3 weeks post concussion I really need to be more mindful of not wasting any brain cells. This book robbed me of some of my precious cells, thankfully it was only a 6 hour listen so it wasn't drastic, however I regret reading this. I admit the opening of the book and even the first few chapters were pretty intriguing, young woman is whisked off to her rich fiance's family home ,The Pond, because the parents have suddenly died. When she arrives things begin to change.....Unfortunately typical K-Mod style twist and "shocking" moments start happening [Case in point, The diary + austyn = gross, From there B Rated movie moments abound, - characters start doing ridiculously stupid stupid things., "I know I shouldn't do XYZ".....character proceeds to do XYZ the very next sentence. -Terrible lies that are believed, "I didn't know every month I was paying "Emily" 35,000 dollars out of my account"--Side note Emily is Austyn's friend who is staying with them. Next paragraph, "Well actually Emily is the name of a house keeper, it is her salary". Austyn believes it.....like really? -The names....Fallon, Dallas, Austyn, Lowell.....I won't even touch that. -Chinese arithmetic is easier that trying to explain the numerous twist and turns that occur in the last 10% of the book.....(Do not blame my concussion, this was just typical childish K mod writing)
Holly If you are still reading this, please do not read this next sentence.
Holly was right again, why do I do this to myself? DO I like pain and torture? Maybe I just keep hoping K Mod will surprise me, but alas, this book was terrible.....
Thank you net galley for this advanced copy of The Family Secret by Kristen Modglin. I was not influenced in any way for this honest review of this book.
I liked this second book I've read by this author. Austin was engaged to Lowell, and they went to Lowell's childhood home after Lowell's parents were killed. Austin becomes suspicious after hearing some of the family secrets. She now isn't sure who she's marrying. Dallas is Lowell's brother. Austin and Dallas? Yes, those were some of the names in the book. Austin finds a journal that a former worker had written and has no doubt something is wrong. The former worker had died young, apparently having an affair with Lowell's grandfather. Not a bad story, and the ending was unexpected.
"'Of all the things I love about you, your selfless little heart is at the top of my list.'"
Lowell Bass is heir to a large company and an even larger estate. It's not something he's properly introduced to his new fiancee, Austyn, however. She's dunked into it all when Lowell's parents suddenly both pass away from an 'accident.' It's clear the place, and the family, have long histories tangled with complications and secrets. What's not clear is her new future as her fiancee takes over everything his parents left behind. And then an old friend she hasn't spoken to in years calls, telling of her impending divorce and asking to stay with Austyn. Lowell graciously offers she stay at the estate, and that's the moment I knew things were headed for an explosion.
"Houses have feelings. When you walk inside them, you know whether it’s a happy home or…something else. The Pond feels anything but happy. It feels nothing like a home."
I was sure I knew where this was headed but I was surprised by so many twists and the ending. This book makes you wonder what the painfully rich are really up to behind closed doors.
The Family Secret is Modglin at her very best. When you start reading this, you won’t be able to put it down until your finished – I should know, I read it in one sitting. Modglin has a way of perfectly writing her characters in such a way that you can feel what they are feeling – the anxiety, the fear, and the sorrow. While this is technically a domestic suspense thriller, there is much more to this book than that. It really makes the reader think about how well do we really know someone – your significant other; your best friend; your college roommate? I can honestly say that I haven’t read anything else like this book, and that is another reason that it is so enjoyable. Modglin successfully tricked me again – I still can never figure out her twists!! I highly recommend this book, and believe it needs to be read by anyone that enjoys a thriller book.
I have heard so many good things about Kiersten Modglin, and after finishing this book, I can see what all the hype is about!
This story was entertaining and suspenseful, everything I hope for in a psychological thriller. I love Austyn and could relate so much to her people-pleasing nature and constantly second guessing herself. The Bass family is intense, and each person is striking in their own way. The ending was twisty and surprising. I couldn’t put it down once the drama started unfolding!
Lowell Bass needs to return home as both his parents died suddenly. His fiancée Austyn Murphy goes with him and quickly can tell that things are not quite right. Their stay is lengthened because of the complications of the reading of the will, as well as what might happen to the family business. The longer they stay the more it seems likely that Lowell never intends on leaving. This does not bode well for Austyn. She loves Lowell but she owns her own business, a bakery, and she needs to be near her mother as her mother relies on her.
Austyn knew that Lowell had money, but what she did not realize is that he and his family are richer than rich. Meanwhile, there is a lot of tension between his siblings Fallon and Dallas. Then there is the matter as to how their parents died. At first it was said to be an accident, but it was actually an overdose, one that was suspicious.
One day Austyn finds a book deep in a in the closet. It appears that the book is a journal and the writer was a 16-year-old named Celine. Austyn soon realizes that the journal had something to do with the Bass family and she has determined to find out everything she can about the journal and about whatever could’ve happened to that girl. All the while Austyn begins to see changes in Lowell. Her treatment from his siblings is odd. Fallon seems very distant, and there is just something about Dallas that makes her very nervous.
To further complicate matters, her best friend has broken up with her husband and Austyn and Lowell invite her to stay in his family’s home. Her name is Emily and Austyn is really concerned that something more is going on with Emily than she can make sense of. Meanwhile, she continues to read the journal, and, although she’s not sure why, she keeps the secret about the journal, and what she is reading about the girl that was named Celine.
This fabulous story dealt with secrets, lies and some shocking twists and turns. Kiersten Modglin has done it again. She has written a book that kept me riveted to my Kindle and I could not tap my screen fast enough. For an exciting and thrilling story, The Family Secret definitely fits the bill.
Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
