Psycho Pass: Inspector Shinya Kogami #1

Psycho-Pass: Inspektor Šin'ja Kógami 1

Rate this book

Great illustrations, easy to read emotions.
Interesting to see the prequel, and the back story. I found some of the dialog hard to figure out who was saying what a few times. I prefer the anime to the manga myself it just didn't have the same fun level.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars.

Okay, so first things first. Psycho-Pass is probably one of my favourite animes of all time. Also, I had no idea that they were creating a prequel manga.

I have personally never read a manga before. I know...*shame* *shame* *shame*

It took a hot minute to get used to reading backwards, but once I did, I was super happy to get back into the world of Psycho-Pass! However, as excited as I was to jump back into this amazing futuristic world, I found the storyline to be a tad confusing.

It took me a while to grasp what the hell was going on. Once it started to click I started to enjoy the story a lot more, but it took a while for me to get there.

I'm still looking forward to picking up the second volume though, I can't turn down more Psycho-Pass! I'm totally willing to give the second volume a chance and I hope it's a little easier to follow this time around!

This is listed as a prequel and I think might have worked better if I had read/watched whatever it is a prequel to, because I found the setting a bit confusing. That may well have been due to external distractions during reading, however. The story seemed solid enough and I plan to continue.

If you leave the final s off the title whilst searching goodreads you get an interesting selection of foreign-language novels.

As someone who’s never seen the anime or anything this was an interesting introduction. The art style was really interesting and I enjoyed the dark mystery. I’m usually not too into this sort of thing cause I prefer more outright horror but this kept my attention and I’m sure by the end of the 6 books I’ll want to watch the anime.

Woo Psycho-Pass in manga form! If you like the awesome anime then you'll probably like this. Not as good as the anime but still good.

This is a prequel to the show Psycho Pass, one focusing on Shinya Kogami while he was an inspector rather than an Enforcer, tracking down people based on their Psycho-Pass numbers and trying to stop Psycho-Hazards. If all of that sounds like weird code words without much meaning, that's because you haven't seen Psycho Pass. While you might be okay reading this without watching the anime thanks to a crash course on the titular Psycho-Pass, much of the world and ramifications that were covered in season 1 of the anime will be entirely lost on you. Very little time is spent filling you in on this version of the future, so you might be confused when, say, one character is freaking out about the Enforcers but not about Inspector Kogami.

Overall, though, this volume is just a slightly futuristic version of shows like Criminal Minds. It's fairly by-the-numbers for a cop show, but keep in mind that I mentioned Criminal Minds. There's some weird stuff they're tracking down. It might get into the more philosophical and (anime spoiler for about halfway through season 1) territory in later volumes, as it kind of hints at with the last chapter. I'm not sure how earth-shattering any revelations will be in this series, especially for fans of the anime who have already seen some surprising and shocking stuff.

There are some new characters, though, in the Enforcers, and that makes me wonder what will happen to them to get them written out of the future anime story. It's a different section of the department than what was followed in the original anime, so maybe nothing bad will happen to them... but this IS Psycho Pass, after all... It's a shame, as I'm already rather attached to a couple of the characters in this batch of quirky, socially inept gang.

As an extension of the Psycho-Pass universe, though, it should be interesting to see how Kogami was when he hadn't gone latent criminal yet. I'm just not sure how much people new to the series will get out of this prequel.

I'm a huge fan of the anime (and of the movie) so I was very happy when my friend offered this to me. Having only two days to finish my challenge, I'm turning toward mangas because I doubt I'll have time to read anything else.
This first volume was quite interesting. As usual, the police intrigue was well built, I kept wondering who was behind the stolen organs. I also very much enjoyed discovering new characters and seeing old ones such as Ginoza, Masaoka (Love him)or even Akane (even though just a short cameo). But of course, what I loved most was being able to see Kogami again. More than being an interesting, well-fleshed character, he also represents humans complexity in a society where feelings are being controlled to a certain extent. I really enjoyed being able to see him as a young detective, before he turned into a potential criminal and became a hunting dog.

Vabbè, vediamo come procede.

People's personalities can be digitized. Now, why would you want to corrupt storage devices with human personalities is beyond me. It does seem to have benefits, though, like preventing potential criminals from commiting crimes. Yes, that's arresting 'latent criminals' before they do anything bad, based on a crime coefficient. Human rights, anyone?

Of course, this world also has aptitude tests that determine what jobs you suited for. The main character Akane has gotten a perfect score, so she can have her pick of the best jobs available, even the most coveted jobs for the government. She chooses the Criminal Investigation Department. Shouldn't it be 'prevention department'?

Akane's first job as inspector turns sour. She is assigned two skilled enforcers, latent criminals employed by the government, who kill the target. Unfortunately, the target's hostage is also reported as latent criminal by the government's scanning devices. Akane tries to prevent her enforcers from capturing her, which puts her in the spotlight for not following protocol. Her hesitation is an obstacle, but soon she realises that her innate ability to judge the situation will help her in her job.

In a future world where peace and order are maintained via consistent monitoring of one’s psychological and emotional state (I.e their “psycho-pass”), Inspector Shinya Kogami is tasked with rooting out aberrant personalities and eliminating criminal threats. With the help of a senior Inspector and a team of Enforcers (people with elevated psycho-pass scores who can forego imprisonment or worse by working with the police), Kogami attempts to uphold the system in place.

But, as the crimes he investigates begin to chisel away at the foundations of the system undergirding their reality, will Kogami be able to maintain his own psycho-pass? Or, will he become the very kind of person he hunts down for justice?

I’m excited to finally be reading this prequel manga! Psycho-pass is, perhaps, my favorite anime ever made. Kogami is certainly a stand-our character for his complexity and the questions his character poses in the context of this story and world. Though I know how this all ends, I’m looking forward to watching it unfold~

Definitely recommend Psycho-Pass!!! Especially for anyone who loves an intense psychological thriller~

I’ve been a fan of Psycho Pass since it first debuted in 2012. It captured my heart and attention and still does 11 years later.

I think volume 1 of this prequel series does an adept job at setting the ground work for what comes. The initial case is intriguing and overall pretty good, even of the story beats at the start (say, first two chapters) are a little hard to follow.

Have been waiting for this whole series to be pubbed to read it, and as a fan I like what I’ve read so far. The illustrations/art are excellent, and pulls the feel of the universe first seen in 2012 masterfully.

Dialogue and characters are solid too, with this division that Ko works with being pretty endearing in their own ways (I like Amari).

I do wonder if this will lead into what I hope it does backstory for what happened to Sasayama and what lead Ko to become an enforcer. It’s what it should be doing but I’ll see.

I never know how to rate manga, and as such, my three stars is subject to change, but I think that rating is pretty close to where it should be, for me.
I liked this manga, but had some minor issues with it.

It's interesting to see a slice of Kogami's life as an Inspector, and the art is well done.
I feel the story moves perhaps a little too quickly, but, considering everything the manga is attempting to say and all the characters being introduced in a short 160 pages, I guess that's how it must be. I'm talking circles here a bit. Like I said, I have a hard time rating most manga.

Still, it's Psycho Pass, and it's focused on one of the best characters, and I enjoyed it. It's certainly no masterpiece, but perhaps the next installments will improve upon the foundation here, and garner a more favorable rating from me.

I'm super biased because I love the "Psycho-Pass" series and Shinya Kogami is my favorite character from the series, but I really enjoyed this manga. I didn't know what I was expecting going into this series, but I knew that it was the prequel to the manga and anime. If you've seen or read the original series, then you know that Kogami is an Enforcer and no longer an Inspector. I'm really hoping that this series will give us all the backstory ad to how he "fell from grace."

What I liked about this series is that there are two female Enforcers on the team and I'm already loving Hina Amari. Her flippant personality and lack of empathy make me like her for some reason. I suppose she kinda reminds me of myself a bit, but I think I would be more squeamish around blood than Amari is.

Big fan of the Psycho Pass series here 🙌.

The Psycho Pass universe never ceases to make me curious and I wish to read more about it. I wish all the novels were translated so I could read them as well.

In this prequel we get to see at least 3 main characters from the OG cast in Season 1 and how they were like in the past. What I like about the (overall) series is that we get to see not only different type of cases, which allow us to learn about its current cultures, people, beliefs, etc, but also observing our main characters mindsets, how they change throughout the years, as well as what situations make them change.

This is actually my ~3rd re-read of this volume, I'm surprised I haven't rated it before (?). I'm confused. Anyways, can't wait to get through this whole prequel.♡

I am entirely biased and adore this series with my whole heart! I love the anime and am looking forward to the upcoming movie – in preparation for it, I decided to give this prequel series a read and see Kogami before he became a legendary enforcer!

This was a fantastic read! It was fun seeing "baby chick" Kogami just starting out as an investigator (detective) and getting advice from his fellow peers and colleagues. There are a few characters that carry over into the main anime as well, and it's interesting seeing their interactions with Kogami while he's still young & impressionable. The case got super weird and I can't even predict the direction it's going in but it's pretty bizarre! This prequel series is definitely giving me "Kogami's Bizarre Adventure" vibes hahaha!

Book #110 for the year 2020.

Its the future and food is Hyper-Oats and nothing real or organic. Crime is contained for the most part by monitoring people's emotional states. The Inspectors and Enforcers of the Public Safety Bureau are charged with justice and taking care of outbreaks. These are their files. (sorry... couldn't help myself). There is a problem with artificial kidneys that have numbers stamped on them. And time is running out for some people.

Wasn't really something I was into and that upsets me because I was SO excited to watch the anime on Netflix but I think I'm gonna pass on this one. Sometimes the plot was really hard to follow and the characters were pretty bland as well. Doesn't even come close to GITS like other people suggest it does...

This is a great adaptation of the show. Anyone who watches the show probably hungers to know about Kogami's past. This is an appetizer for those who have been waiting. This shows him as an inspector, officially taking the lead on cases. It also has some fan favorites. I highly recommend reading this!

This series is a fantastic, futuristic sci-fi action drama set in a world where citizens need to fall within a specific range of psychological, physical and emotional ratings called their “Psycho-Pass” or be deemed harmful to society. With spectacular art, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as you follow Inspector Shinya Kogami in his early days of working in this gritty, unforgiving future.

I’m a huge Psycho Pass fan so when I saw someone selling their whole collection on eBay I decided to bought it and I’m so happy I did!

This is the first volume of Inspector Kogamj Shinya and tells the story of Ko in his youth before he became an enforcer. I enjoyed the story a lot and I also loved seeing Pops in here (even though I already know how it will end for him 😭). The new characters are pretty endearing too so I can’t wait to read the next volumes!

Huge fan of the first season of the anime (there are no other seasons in my mind), so it's nice to have a series about Kogami. He was always a draw for me in the anime, so I like the extra time with his character. Good first volume and beginning of an interesting case. Manga is pretty easy to blow through quickly, so I will probably be done reading the series soon.
