A lot of the art criticism in this book went over my head. The author seemed to assume a level of prior knowledge that I didn't have. For example, in a book about El Greco, I would expect to learn something about mannerism, but, while Bronstein used this term, he never explained what it means. Also, I didn't appreciate the name-dropping of fellow art scholars with no explanation of who they are. The paintings, however, are gorgeous. I love the way El Greco paints hands. So the art gets five stars and the text one.
