Formula Q is the fastest motorsport in the world. Only the highest-performing athletes can make it to the grid. They drive fast, work hard, and play hard, but off-camera, anything goes.
The public knows me as Damon ‘the Speed Demon’ Davidoff, eligible bachelor and winner of FQ titles around the world. Fans adore me and my team supports me. They don’t need to know I’m so deep in the closet I intend to bury myself there.
Then my poor health catches up to me and my world comes crashing down. I could bounce back easily if it weren’t for one little complication: my male nurse is attractive as hell.
I can suppress these feelings during the season break—I have to. I’m not going to expose my secret just because I feel a fire coursing through my veins when Rocky puts his hands on me.
As the weeks go by, I somehow let Rocky under my skin and into my heart. He’s smart, sweet, and everything I never knew I needed.
I thought I wanted a clean bill of health and to keep winning my races. Now, for the first time in my life, I want so much more. I want him, and damn if that isn’t the scariest thing I’ve ever felt.
Drive to Thrive is a male/male motorsports romance novel. It involves Christmas karaoke, New Year’s Eve parties, Las Vegas swimming pool dates, and yes, lots of racing action worldwide. It is book one of a series, has a HEA, and can be read as a standalone
CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. At first it was all about superheroes and pocket monsters, but his genre of choice has expanded since puberty.
He’s been consuming young adult gay fiction since he was a teen, but within the past five years moved up to the big leagues of gay adult romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.
He lives in New York City with the love of his life and is a nurse by trade. When he’s not reading and writing, he’s playing board games and practicing music. He is honored to become a self-published author, and if you’re reading this, your support means so much to him that it’s giving him a tingly feeling (in a good way).
I'm bored, don't find the characters interesting, and am not loving the writing style. It's a pity because the author does seem knowledgeable (or well-researched, either is good) on the medical aspects but I just can't see myself connecting with the characters so per my only 2024 book resolution to DNF more decisively, I'm calling it quits. Maybe I should have a quarterly review where I read an extra chapter of DNF-ed books to see if I was just in a mood... watch this space.
This books kicks off C.D. Rachels's second series, and we're off to a great start! Rachels is still gaining momentum from his first series, Artists and Athletes. Those books were fantastic for an author's debut and did improve with each outing. The trend continues here with the story of Damon and Rocky - a fantastic and creative story.
Damon is a Formula Q race car driver - in which there are no out gay athletes. And he has told himself he will not be the first. Ever. That's a problem because Damon is, well... gay. Bit of a problem there for him to be authentic self! The story starts following a health crisis Damon had after a race that caused him to pass out in front of the cameras. He's now on the fast track to get himself better so he'll be ready to get back to racing when the season starts again.
Enter Rocky. Rocky is an adorable, confident, out gay man, who is assigned to Damon's case as his in home nurse for treatments. Damon just about swallows his tongue when he sees Rocky - just what an in-the-closet gay is not looking for - a gorgeous, funny, and caring man to be plopped right down in front of him. In his home. Alone. So... Damon does what he can to hide his attraction. He's a big fat jerk.
But after some time, Damon realizes what he's doing and recognizes that his treatment of Rocky is not only unfair, but downright rude. He works to make amends and the two become friends. The romance here is a slow burner at first because while the two MCs are attracted to each other, they truly do spend time developing their friendship. I love this part of the book because we really get time to enjoy their relationship - there is a lot of caring and empathy, and it feels natural in its progression.
Once the two finally give in to one another, it's steamy fun and goodness! Damon and Rocky have a strong emotional connection that intensifies their physical relationship - and let me tell you it is fun to read! They are not the only ones who can't get enough of each other! But with all of that goodness, we know a mountain of a problem is coming since Damon will not be out, and Rocky cannot stand to be a hidden secret.
My absolute favorite part of this book though is the moment we all know is coming - what happens when Damon's closeted behavior becomes too much for Rocky. The conversation between the two of them is real. And raw. And heart wrenchingly honest. They both explode with their pent up frustration at their situation - and while it's sad and emotional, it's also gorgeously portrayed because THIS is what happens in real life. Real people fight. Real people say and do hurtful things. It's what happens after that speaks to the kind of person someone is. And what happens after here is brave and caring. I absolutely loved it. Not gonna lie, I think I've read that part about 4 times in the last 2 days!
This is a wonderful book filled with all kinds of emotion - and while I do love some excellent sexy times! - that's what really draws me in to a story. I love when two MCs are so drawn to one another, it's a magnetism they are impossible to fight.
5/5 star read for me and I look forward to the next in the series since we met some intriguing secondary characters here!
I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review. Thanks for reading!
I am a big fan of C.D. Rachel's Artists and Athletes series and so was looking forward to seeing what a new series based around Formula Q car racing would be like. Damon and Rocky don't disappoint with a strong relationship that develops between them starting with a tentative friendship with Damon reluctant as he worried his attraction would be obvious, not something a closeted sports star wants. Some things can't be denied though and Rocky proves himself trustworthy and as such a truly lovely guy. Caring for his patients as a nurse and donating his time and money to a local LGBTQ community group. The crux comes when Damon is away for the majority of the year, racing, and then, when together they'd have to hide their relationship. It's something they both struggle with but Rocky especially as he's been out for several years. The story starts out and ends really well, with big developments and connections made. Not just with the MC's but also their families, friends and colleagues. The middle did drag a little for me as they spent time apart but it soon had drama added to the mix. I loved the interaction we had with other drivers from the circuit. I think they came as an unexpected friendship with more depth than what Damon had been allowing. Overall, this is a good start to a new series. You can feel the adrenaline that Damon experiences when he races and also the tender, caring ways in which the two men are together. A good mix of emotion and drama with a strong supportive cast that I'm looking forward to hearing more from. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Drive to Thrive is an incredibly sweet book with BIPOC and chronic illness rep - plus lots of smoking hot race car drivers, what more could you want?!
Damon ‘The Speed Demon’ Davidoff is an Australian (although raised in the US) professional FQ driver (think F1, but made-up) and finds himself at the centre of a lot of unwanted attention when he collapses after a race. All throughout his life he has been battling a chronic illness in his digestive system and it has finally caught up with him. In order to keep his racing contract, he has to undergo treatment to manage his condition.
Rocky Acala, a Filipino nurse, cannot believe his luck when he meets his new client - a totally smoking hot FQ driver… not that Rocky knows anything about racing, he just loves graphic novels and pursuing his dream of being an artist himself. After spending time together giving Damon his medical treatments, Rocky feels himself growing closer to the closeted driver. They both realise they love spending time together, but Rocky doesn’t know if he can be Damon’s secret, especially whilst he travels the world racing.
This book was a sweet yet angsty read - so so much mutual pining! Rocky and Damon clearly like each other from the get-go, but Damon believes he can’t be out in the racing world and Rocky doesn’t want to hide in the closet with him. There is a lot of will-they-won’t-they in the book which made me want to shake them both very hard! I appreciated the supporting cast of diverse and well-thought out characters who dispense a lot of great advice and are generally very lovely 💕
All in all a great sports romance with a very sweet HEA 🏎️💨
This book was pretty surface-level and shallow, based on physical attraction more than anything else. The writing was mediocre, but not bad.
The dynamic between the two MCs is that one is a patient and one is a nurse. I don’t normally have a problem with doctor / patient relationships if they’re done right, but I found the way this one was written to be in poor taste. The nurse’s friend assigns him the patient because the patient is hot (and tells him that dating patients is allowed??), plus there’s an instalust dynamic, and the nurse gossips to his friend about his hot patient. Before the characters even have one proper conversation, the nurse is talking to his friend about to pros and cons of hooking up with the patient, which was just presumptuous because the patient hadn’t even shown any sign of even being interested. Like imagine meeting a celebrity and acting like hooking up with them is even within the realm of possibility. Plus, it’s just unethical because doctors see you at your most vulnerable and should not be perving on you, and patients should not be perving on professionals that are just trying to do their job. I wouldn’t have had a problem if there was a normal level of attraction, followed by the growth of emotional connection, some moral qualms, a discussion of the power dynamics present and an affirmation of consent, followed by them finally giving in, but this situation skewed more on the side of sexual harassment (in both directions). I mean, who wants the guy assessing your bowels to be perving on you? And who wants someone rubbing their boner against you when you’re just trying to do your job? Also, bowel assessments are made out to be this sexy kind of thing that turns both the MCs on. Like what? I can’t think of something more unsexy than a bowel examination.
In terms of the relationship itself, I felt that the pacing was off. Both characters are instantly attracted to each other. The patient MC is kind of standoffish for less than a week because he’s trying to distance himself from his attraction, but then he gives up in that. Within a week, the characters are friends and both are considering the possibility of getting together, which frankly, is pretty unprofessional given there’s not even a deep emotional connection to justify it. I just wanted them to build a strong emotional connection first. Even by the time I DNFed, it still felt like that emotional connection was missing, even though it was clear the author was trying to tell us there was one present.
The book wasn’t bad, per se, but I couldn’t get past the shallow emotional connection and pacing issues, so I DNFed.
I love when romances have disability and chronic illness rep, so I was thrilled to see Damon has a life-long chronic illness, and while part of the book is about him dealing with his health, it's not the main focus. I really appreciate that once his health is back on track, he's not magically HEALED or anything - he still deals daily with his chronic illness, but it's managed and he's able to live a normal life. Well, as normal as a superstar Formula Q racer's life can be, haha!
Damon lives his life in the public eye, and being a superstar in a very "masculine" sport like racing he's afraid to come out as gay because of the repercussions it might have on his career. He already feels like he's on shaky ground because of what is essentially a flare-up of his chronic illness and now folks are questioning if he's healthy enough to keep racing - he doesn't want to get his management another potential reason to get rid of him.
Enter Rocky, the sweet (and super hot) nurse who gives Damon his thrice weekly IV nutrition treatments. Rocky and Damon are so sweet together, and my heart just hurt so much for them, especially Rocky. They want so badly to be together, but Damon is terrified to come out of the closet and Rocky is hurt by him staying in - and of course neither of them wants to hurt the other, but they also need to protect themselves. It's an impossible situation, and my heart ached every moment until the resolution.
This is the first book in the Formula Q series, and I can't wait to read more! This can be read as a standalone. I have my suspicions about which of Damon's fellow drivers might be a lead in future books, and I'm so excited to see how their love stories play out on the page.
Another excellent read by CD Rachels!! Truth be told, I begged CD to write this book because I love F1 (and all it’s sexy drivers) and he totally killed it!! Damon Davidoff is a Formula Q driver at the top of his game, when an old health issue flairs up and forces him into intensive treatment. He’s worried about being able to keep driving, and he’s willing to do whatever he needs to to get better. When his doctor sets him up with an in-home nurse to complete his treatments, he isn’t prepared for the beautiful man that shows up at his door. Rocky is smart, sweet, talented, and insanely gorgeous, but Damon knows he can’t be a gay man in the racing world. As their friendship turns to more, Rocky struggles with living in the shadows, and Damon struggles with balancing his secret life and his public career. Both men have to decide what’s worth it, and if they are in it for the long run. Sweet, steamy, and such a fun read!!
Motorsports - "Formula Q" Damon, gay closeted driver Rocky, gay Filipino male nurse Volunteering in a LGBTQ support center Nurse-client to friends to lovers Mutual pining and all the feeeeels A Filipino big family Supportive families, friends and teammates Secret relationship Beautiful HEA *BIPOC author*
It's my first book by CD Rachels and will definitely catch up with his previous books! I felt a lot, I loved the Asian rep VERY much and reading about a sport that's rare in MM romance. There was a bit of PR drama but there was never a hint of doubt that Damon and Rocky had big feelings for each other, from the beginning and growing until their very beautiful HEA!
Formula Q is fast exceptionally fast only the best performing make the grid, Damon Davidoff is one. Rocky is a male nurse, extremely good looking
As time goes by Damon has undeniable sexual feelings for Rocky but needs to keep them hidden his body reacts whenever Rocky enters the room with parts that should lay down don't! Can Rocky hide is feelings for Damon, in Rocky's subconscious he believes David is straight! A lovely story of how Damon and Rocky found and established a relationship which is Formula Q wasn't an easy feat. With a great storyline and wonderful characters such a great book to read.
This was my first book by this author and I truly enjoyed the plot and the writing.
I was expecting a bit more angst based on the blurb, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was not the case. That is not to say that the book was tension free because Damon does struggle with coming out publicly. And Rocky also faces challenges being in a relationship with a closeted celebrity. However, both MCs rarely let misunderstandings interfere with their interactions and relationship; they acted like adults which is refreshing.
I look forward to more books by this author and this series.
This is such a sweet and savory story between an FQ driver and a male nurse. Damon ‘the speed demon’ Davidoff and Rocky get off to a rocky (no pun intended) start. David is the quintessential closeted sports hunk and can’t seem to control himself when he has an instant attraction to his nurse. So he becomes irritated and grumpy, making Rocky unsure if Damon even likes him. Damon eventually gets ahold of himself and this is when the real magic happens! - watching cartoons together -party kisses -karaoke bar shenanigans -rooftop pool outings If you’re looking for a sweet, heartfelt friends to lovers read, be sure to check this one out!!
When I read the blurb, I was afraid this book would be a lot of car racing of which I know nothing about. In reading it, it became more about the hiding of homosexuality in sports and lack of freedom to be yourself. Damon is a FQ Driver and Rocky the nurse he needs to help him with a medical condition. It doesn't take long to fall in love. I enjoyed this book and loved all his driver friends. Rocky was a chill guy and also well supported. CD wrote and entertaining book with great characters. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.
Drive to Thrive was my first intro into any kind of Race car driving book and I’m glad I gave it a chance! Super cute story. Rocky was so likable and smart (and kinda dreamy let’s be honest). But Damon, oof, Damon was the most precious Angel baby who just wanted to be loved for himself.
On the positive side, this book has the sort of representation one simply does not find in a gay romance novel. One of the main characters is Filipino American, while the other has a serious health issue that requires the sort of monitoring and care that a lot of people would simply find unattractive. On the negative side, it’s dull as dirt and poorly written.
This book was so stinking cute it’s not even funny! Since I like formula 1 the references were great to see and I enjoyed them so much! I couldn’t get enough of these characters and their storyline, I ate it up in 2 sittings!
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book though Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review.
“Drive to Thrive” by CD Rachels is the first book in his Formula Q series. It focuses on Formula Q race car driver, Damon, and his journey out of the closest. A fainting spell directly related to Damon’s ischemic bowels ends up with him needing extended TPN treatments. Enter, Rocky, a new male nurse whom Damon is instantly attracted to. The attraction is mutual, btw.
I love that CD always incorporates BIPOC characters into his work. Representation matters and it’s always nice to know that you can get that in a CD Rachels’s title. Rocky is Filipino, loves to draw when he isn’t doing his day job, and wears his heart on his sleeve. Damon is dedicated to his career and afraid of what coming out will do for his public image and his team’s sponsorships.
Rocky and Damon strike up a friendship during his treatments. It’s during a New Years celebration that the two transition to a physical relationship. Rocky is very clear about not wanting to be a shameful secret, so the pair agree to terminate their relationship if things ever get too messy or Rocky feels like a dirty secret. Damon treasures his time with Rocky because it’s in those rare moments that he can really be himself. Rocky adores his time with Damon but tries to remain cautious about the realities of dating someone in the closet.
There’s a bit of conflict with a PR scandal on Damon’s part, but the pair manage to resolve their issues and commit themselves fully to one another. I really loved getting some Paul moments. Rocky’s cousin is none other than one of the soccer players from Rachels’s Artist and Athletes series. Melissa, Anders, Robesy, and Berto are great additions to the cast of characters. Both MCs parents are great as well. Of course Rocky’s grandmother Lola is the real MVP. She called it. This book is full of heart and heat. There’s a strong connection between the MCs. It’s a low angst sports/medical romance that will leave a smile on your face. Plus, there are great song choices in the karaoke scenes. *score*
I was quite interested in Damon and Rocky’s story based on the blurb, but the book didn’t entirely pan out for me. Some of the phrasing seemed rather stilted and I lost patience with Damon around the midway point when he just wouldn’t own up to being with Rocky. The ending redeemed things somewhat, but this ended up being one of those books I read in fits and starts instead of straight through. I’m sure there are plenty who will enjoy the book, but it didn’t strike the right chord to keep my interest.
It's...fine 😊 Way too many exclamation points, too cheesy, and odd adverb choices. I could not care less about Formula One and luckily it's so vague, Damon could be in any professional sport.
Damon Davidoff’s nickname is “The Speed Demon”. He’s a famous and talented Formula Q racer, the fastest motorsport in the world. He should be on top of the world, and he is, until he collapses on the podium after his latest race. His ischemic bowels have been an issue for him his entire life – which is why he came to the States with his family when he was younger. At 27 he’s stuck having a PICC line and a nurse coming to his home 3 times a week to administer 3hr IV nutrition treatments. Since his body isn’t digesting food as it should, it’s necessary for this step to be taken to keep from collapsing again, becoming sicker and being allowed to return to the track. All of this is great for Damon until he comes face-to-face with his nurse. His incredibly attractive, competent MALE nurse. See, for all of Damon’s accomplishments, he’s still so far in the closet that a search party would be necessary to find him and drag him out – which he never intends to do.
Rocky is a nurse, who works with his friend Melissa, a GI Specialist (and Damon’s Dr) and spends his spare time practicing his drawing – something he’s extremely talented at, but far too modest about – and volunteering at an LGBTQ+ program. He’s extremely attracted to his patient but doesn’t want to cross any professional boundaries and he also isn’t sure if Damon is even gay, let alone out, unlike Rocky. When it becomes clear that there’s something deeper than their growing friendship, Rocky takes the chance to ask Damon if he wants to attend one of the meetings at the program. He promises it will be discreet and will help Damon find the strength he needs to be his authentic self. Rocky agrees to see Damon secretly until he’s ready, because their connection is so strong and their attraction suffocating. Their relationship, while a secret to the outside world, is beautiful, loving, and full of happy moments and firsts for both men.
When Damon’s manager convinces him to make it look like he’s dating a singer – which neither Damon nor Nat (the singer) want – Rocky is forced to watch his lover go on fake dates with a woman. He realizes that he truly can’t handle being Damon’s secret and ends things, breaking both their hearts. Can Damon find it within himself to come out publicly, to his seemingly less-than-understanding parents, his Team owners, his teammates, and the world? If he does, will Rocky be willing to take him back?
I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is unpaid and honest. Drive to Thrive C.D. Rachels
The editing was a complete miss, it felt stilted and unnatural in many places, almost reading like a fleshy outline with bullet points on the things to hit on to keep the tropes/build-a-plot thing going, and I honestly don’t understand what happened with this book if I compare it to the last series.
That being said, because I feel like a total jerk and I had so much excitement and hope for this new series, I have to point out that it was really good for what it was.
If you look at it like a cute little love story based on typical sports m/m tropes, it holds up. There’s angst, but it’s pretty predictable and minimal, so it’s not like.. driving the entire book.. kind of. I mean, it does center on the whole “closet-dwelling sports guy” trope, but it lets you know that you won’t be seeing anyone hurting too badly for too long. It gives good vibes and a mostly easy road to a HEA. Though, honestly, I’m not into the need to perpetuate feeling like coming out is going to ruin your entire life, especially in my pretend romance worlds. I’d like to read a book where someone just.. gets to be happy, and it doesn’t matter who with. I get that that’s not realistic, but let’s be real with ourselves and remember that it’s not REALLY realistic to begin with, so 🫠
The thing that gets me the most, though, is that Ive seen this done so many times. And while it’s about a new sport, it feels like all the other books I’ve already read. Like, pick an outline, paste in your details, and BAM! A book like the others. Yay. The character’s originality and depth from the first series is missing here. I get it, I sound hateful and harsh, but I can’t pretend I’m living and dying for this when I’m not. I have seen what this author can do, and I want so badly for him to KEEP doing it. I want the same energy, especially since it’s technically the same world, and I don’t want to feel these feelings. I WANT to love it as much as the other books he’s written, but I can’t. And I hate it so much and feel so evil. I don’t like me right now…
In any case, I give it a hearty 3.5/5, with an added dash of personal hope that the same passion from his previous series makes a return. My rating, as always, is based on the book and not my opinion of the story/plot/characters. I’m rating it this way based on the fact that the editing was not it at all and no one caught how choppy and odd some of the scenes came out. It could’ve all been fixed with a more careful, attentive editing session.
In April, 2023, for the first time in three years, the Rainbow Book Fair resumed. It is one of the few, if not the only, LGBTQIAPlus book fair, in the United States.
I was unable to attend the one that took place in 2019, but could not wait to return to attend an event that became very close to me, especially since I AM a Gay man.
While there, a few months ago, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr. CD Rachels, the author of this book, "Drive to Thrive," the first in the "Formula Q Series" of M/M (Male and Male) romances.
My softcover copy has 227 pages, including end pages.
This is the story of Damon "The Speed Demon" Davidoff, a world-renowned motorsports driver, and the Fates introducing him to Rocky Acala a professional nurse who helps Damon overcome a health challenge.
Over time, the two connect as more than just patient and medical professional.
I promised myself I would avoid spoilers, and I shall keep my promise.
In the meantime, I found this story quite beautiful and touching, with so many real life moments about the challenges any two men can have, moving in the direction of having a long-term, committed romantic relationship with each other.
I also loved the fact that Rocky is Filipino; it is a culture that is mostly unfamiliar to me, and one that reminds me how so very beyond long overdue I AM to FINALLY visit the Philippine Bread House in Jersey City, New Jersey, but I digress.
I also loved seeing how much support both Damon and Rocky have in their lives, from family, friends and other loved ones.
This was my first introduction to Mr. Rachels' writings, and I AM very impressed with his world-building abilities. I truly began to immediately care about all the characters, from the lead characters to all the supporting characters, even Aunt Marcy (smile).
In case you are wondering, I already have the second in this Series, "Drive to Feel Alive," and cannot wait to begin reading it.
Drive to Thrive is a fun story, and kicks off C.D. Rachels' new series about Formula Q racing. Damon is on top of the racing world when he’s struck down by a recurrence of a chronic health problem. Laying low in his luxury pad in Vegas, his doctor arranges for in-home treatment with a private nurse. That nurse happens to be the very attractive, out and proud, Rocky. They do not get off to a great start. Damon is rude, cranky, and so deeply in the closet that he acts out to hide his attraction to the man he’ll be seeing three times a week. Things thaw as they begin to talk and get to know each other. I enjoyed watching them share bits of themselves. Alone at Christmas, Damon is invited to spend it with Rocky’s large loving family, bonding over Filipino food and karaoke. A stolen kiss on New Year’s Eve has them seeing literal fireworks. I really enjoyed the emotional and physical connection these two shared. But it’s not easy. Damon’s not being out causes is a huge roadblock- because as much as Rocky loves Damon, he doesn’t like being a dirty secret. I felt for Damon, thinking he had to hide his sexuality in the testosterone-fueled sport he loved. The fear he has that someone would reveal his relationship with Rocky was palpable. Rocky was a great character and you can’t help but love him. Caring, with an artistic soul. His disbelief at his secret life of dating a millionaire race car driver was amusing and relatable. There are wonderful secondary characters and I’m hoping Rocky’s friend Hunter and Damon’s hottie driver friend are next in this series. And it was refreshing that none of the fears Damon had about coming out ever came to fruition. Ultimately, Damon needs to decide if keeping up his playboy public image (complete with fake dating) is worth losing the man he loves. Some sage advice by a retiring teammate leads to the kind of grand romantic gesture and HEA that make this book such a delight. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆ 3.5 stars rounded up
This is a very enjoyable read – but if you were hoping for lots of motor sport content, then you might be disappointed. It centres very much around Damon, a very successful driver, who has a health condition he previously kept under wraps. As an aside, as a medical drama fan, I did find that side of things fascinating!
Spending the off season recovering, thanks in no small part to a delicious nurse called Rocky, Damon has to decide whether he wants personal happiness at the potential loss of his professional success – ideally, he wants it all! Inevitably, he worries that strike one from bad health, followed by strike two, revealing he is gay, may end a career that has years to run.
I loved Rocky's family pitching in and making Damon feel normal and included. And whilst he was conflicted, he was also finally seeing that he could maybe be everything he wanted to be with the support of the right partner.
I will definitely look out for the next installment.

This is a new to me author, and I picked it up as I don't remember seeing a book set in motor racing before, at least not in top echelon racing, and I was so intrigued by that premise. This wasn't what I expected, in the very best way. The story starts with Damon not in a good place, health wise. Turns out he has an ongoing health condition and requires regular treatment. Enter Rocky, his nurse and the two connect over the course of Damon's treatments. I liked both Damon and Rocky, even when Damon was being a bit difficult when he first met Rocky - I get it, he wasn't out and was terrified of the effect on his career. I can't think of any top tier racing drivers who are out, and I understand his reluctance to be first, given all the attention on his life already.
I loved the connection between Rocky and Damon, it was pretty instant and I loved seeing them hanging out together and becoming best friends along with navigating whatever it was between them. It's kind of a slow(ish) burn, medium heat but a nice development. I loved seeing Damon with Rocky's family too, that was a nice scene.
Overall this was far sweeter and gentler than I expected - that is a good thing, definitely not a criticism. I loved all the side characters too, Damon's friends and colleagues were all great and I'm in for the next one in the series. Motorsports, romance, what else could be better?
Drive to Thrive kicks off the new Formula Q series by CD Rachels. A closeted celebrity racer and a snarky nurse are featured in this story.
Damon "the speed demon" Davidoff is a Formula Q driver who is so deep in the closet he's afraid he'll never find a way out. He doesn't allow anyone in his life to get close to him. When he gets sick and needs a nurse to give him his meds at home three days a week, things get a little tricky. Especially when that nurse is the most gorgeous man Damon has ever seen.
Rocky is the nurse tasked with giving Damon treatment for a digestion condition. He doesn't follow sports at all but knows Damon is a big deal in his world. He also might be as into Rocky as Rocky is into him. This could get really tricky.
These guys had great chemistry as friends and as lovers. I loved their banter and the way their relationship blossomed. I also loved the way Damon fit into Rocky's family. It was really cute.
There are quite a few obstacles these men have to face in this book but none are insurmountable. I'd say this is a low-medium angst book. My heart broke for them several times. It's emotional and raw, very relatable in many ways.
The book is well written and well researched. I was a big fan of the side characters and look forward to seeing them in future books. This was a good start to a new series.

Drive to Thrive is the first book in the new Formula Q series by CD Rachels. Though the story did deal with issues of coming out in the motorsports world, the story was relatively low angst on the most part. Kudos to the author for the chronic illness representation as well. It was done respectfully and realistically, and that is being said by someone with a medical background. Now onto the MCs. Rocky was such a sweetheart and I really liked him and his big Filipino family. They reminded me of mine where get togethers are noisy, boisterous affairs where everyone is always up in your business or giving their unasked for opinions on your life.
Damon was a tad more sedated than Rocky and I think it was due to the fact that he had to hide such an important part of himself. He doesn't have many friends, though by the end of the book it turns out that may not be as true as he thinks. Rocky was the first person he ever felt comfortable being himself around and it made me sad that it took him until his late twenties to feel that way. Damon had a lot of self reflection to go through before him and Rocky could get the HEA they deserved. Thankfully he smartens up after he gets some pretty important advice I think we could all do with and is a perfect ending to my review.
"Don't wait too long to prioritize the ones who make you happy. We only get one shot at life. Find out who really makes it work it and hold onto them."
If you’re a Formula 1 fan, this one’s for you (if you’re not, it’s still for you)! As one myself, there was no doubt going into it that I would enjoy my first Rachels works. Also, I guarantee that you will be guessing which F1 driver Rachels is subtly hinting at through Damon, our race car driver MC.
There’s something so magical about discovering a good author whose books you haven’t yet read. Especially after finishing your first work of theirs, you know you’ve found something worthwhile and you can’t wait to read more of their work.
Damon is my first race car driver MC in an MM romance novel. Obviously you have your conventional athletes, Popstars, mafia leaders, etc etc. Definitely refreshing to explore different MC roles. Rocky is the sweetest and ambitious nurse who’s looking for the right man. And Damon is that right man.
The subtle hints of F1 and Filipino culture throughout the book is definitely nice to notice, especially if you know what they mean. We love the representation.
My only issue, though not a largely pressing one, is that there were parts throughout the plot where I feel there were holes. Not holes, but they could have been more complex or deeper explored in order to further intricate the details.
Anyways, a lovely read, would definitely recommend to any lover of MM romance! Can’t wait to go through more of Rachels’ works and continue reading the Formula Q series.
