This book by Shantanu Paranjape clearly shows how much research the author has done. The book is centered on the siege of Panhala fort by the Adilshahi forces under Siddi Jauhar, the daring escape of the Maratha leader (later Chhatrapati)Shivaji Maharaj, and the battle that followed, where Maratha bravery and determination won the day.
The book does not focus only on Baji Prabhu Deshpande. It also gives attention to important historical figures like Siddi Jauhar, Siddi Masud, Rustam-e-Jaman, and even an East India Company officer, Henry Revington. This makes the narrative richer and more balanced.
The author also briefly covers the caste history of the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu community, along with the historical importance of Panhala Fort and Vishalgad Fort, which adds valuable context to the story.
One of the most touching parts of the book is the inclusion of two beautiful poems on Baji Prabhu’s sacrifice one by Veer Savarkar and the other by Prabodhankar Thackeray.
I am not sure if this book has been translated into English yet, but if you can read Marathi, I strongly recommend giving it a try. You will not regret it.
