Iris Johansen has made quite the name for herself in the thriller genre. On the Hunt lived up to the hype just as expected. From its fast-paced plot to a character you’ll absolutely love to hate, the propulsive drive had me speeding through the pages until the very last word. What I possibly loved the most, however, was a storyline that was easily comparable to an action movie script. Full of edge-of-your-seat moments and one truly epic game of cat-and-mouse, it was no surprise that I finished this book in just a matter of hours.

The characters, unfortunately, felt a bit one-dimensional to this avid reader. They also fit Johansen’s standard formula to a T: an intelligent, courageous woman with a much needed skill and a man who has a scheme and money to burn. Let’s not forget the villain to rival the worst of the worst. Slot in the names from this novel and you’ve got yourself a book. That’s not to say that it didn’t work near flawlessly here too. It just felt, well, rather clichéd all said and done.

Now back to the positives, though… With danger, intrigue, and even a bit of romance, I easily got swept up in the plot as I raced to learn what was going to happen. Centering around a global race to stop a villain in his tracks, I was impressed by the evocative prose and varied cast. I was also happy to find that this was book one in a spinoff series with some of the same characters that played a role in Johansen’s prior novels. That alone brought a smile to my face as did the adrenaline-fueled climax and soul-satisfying conclusion.

Done and dusted, while parts of this novel did feel somewhat unoriginal at its core, the moving parts kept my eyes firmly glued to the pages. After all, with a sweet, clever dog and several animal-loving characters, they made my heart beat right in sync. I do have to warn you, though, that there was just the barest mention of animal injury within the otherwise mostly trigger-free plot. So if you’re a fan of Johansen’s prior books or the likes of James Patterson, I recommend giving this one a try. Unputdownable and binge-worthy, it was a definite rollercoaster ride of suspense. Rating of 4 stars.

SYNOPSIS:

Kira Drake has come to Paris with her highly trained Golden Retriever, Mack, to investigate the horrific bombing of a museum in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.  What she doesn’t know is that one powerful man has a special reason to find the person responsible.

Jack Harlan has all the money in the world, but it can’t bring his brother back. His sibling was murdered during the theft of a scientific discovery that could have made the world a better place. Now, after a four-year search, Harlan learns that this bombing was the work of the same twisted man.

Kira and her dog are in demand from law enforcement agencies all over the world, but Harlan convinces her to continue the investigation for his own purposes, wherever it may lead. So against her better judgment, Kira finds herself on the hunt, placing her trust in Harlan. For what she hopes is justice. When what he may be seeking is vengeance.

Waste of My Time

From the absolutely idiotic dialogue amongst the characters, to the unrealistic ‘heroism’ of the women characters, to the plot of the story, this was a hard read. The use of the word ‘caustically’ was used entirely too much. The reference to Jack Harlan throughout the entire book, by his last name, even from his niece, is just stupid. Timeframes were off. The book was just awful. I wanted to like it but I wasted a whole week trying to finish it, and that’s with me skipping quite a few paragraphs.

This is not a well written book. All of this author’s books have the same exact formula, only difference is the character’s name. It’s time for a change.

I’d read another novel by Johansen, so this sounded good based on the blurb. It wasn’t exactly what I expected. There are several events taking place which results in two strong willed people seeking revenge and justice. Kira and Harlan both have reasons to want bomber, murderer Taylor caught. Kira and her dog, Mack, have potential for future adventures. She’s extremely independent, determined to not be manhandled, spent lots of time proving how good she was on her own. For me the writing style seemed simplistic, immature. The conversations between characters was stilted. There was little character development, I had no background on Kira or Harlan until half way through the story. I felt like I’d been dropped into a crowd of strangers. Where does she live, how did she get into treasure hunting, how did that relate to tracking bad guys? Does she have family? I know that many first in a series lay out background more than plot. This story was heavy on plot. The tech mogul, Harlan, could become interesting, his innovations were original. The men, both the good and evil, spent their time trying to impress Kira or kill her. Fiona, the teenage niece, was the most interesting and believable for me. She was bright and relatable. The treasure, the Egyptian horse breeder, the caves and castle were intriguing. The inevitable romance that developed wasn’t a surprise, it was well worked into the scenes. They spent many hours on a private jet traveling back and forth between the Caribbean, Paris and Egypt.
Longtime readers and a different audience of Johansen will likely appreciate the story, it just did not work for me. I would give the author another try, just not this series. I don’t know what other people are reading but this one was painful! Throughout the book I berated myself for my inability to walk away from it. Fiona - ugh the worst character ever and the story itself had me rolling my eyes so much I got a headache. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Oh, Iris. WTH? I never expect Shakespeare when I pick up one of your books, but I expect so much more than this. The characters were nothing more than paper dolls, although they were all apparently wildly attractive, intelligent, rich and emotionally crippled. The bad guy should have been wearing a black bowler hat and sporting a twirly mustache. The dialogue was terrible, the plot ridiculous. I’m certain my cholesterol levels are off the charts after ingesting this much cheese.

I was very excited to hear of a new series by Iris, as I have loved her Eve Duncan and Kendra Michaels series. This book was kind of a disappointment however. While I felt the story was good in whole, the writing was very stilted, and there were multiple times I felt like I missed something, to the point where I went back and read a few times to make sure I didn't. This turned out to be quite tedious. I am hoping future books will bring satisfaction, but this one was kind of a miss for me.

Really dreadfully written

I am shocked that editors felt this novel was in decent enough shape to publish. The premise and action sequences were ridiculous, the dialogue was silly and poorly written and the main characters were miserable and obnoxious.
I couldn't get into the story and I hated the main female and male characters. As a reader of at least seven to ten books a week, I can confidently share that this ranks among the worst I have read. This series should end here.
And, PS, how dare you charge $15 for this drek.

Not her best work or maybe just not what I expected. I have read quite a few Iris Johansen books over the years. I love the Kendra Michaels series especially, but this book just fell a bit short for me.

My expectations: Story about a search & rescue team. The dog would play a pivotal role in the plot.

My reality: Very little to do with search and rescue. The dog exists as an afterthought.

This may contain spoilers - do not read further if you want a surprise.

I will admit that I zoned out a lot while reading this book so there could be crucial pieces of information that I missed. My apologies if that is the case. The main character is world-renowned in search and rescue (hummm her golden retriever is 4 and it generally takes 1-3 years to fully train a SARs dog). The main character (MC) is also around her mid to late twenties based on general information provided in the storyline. She is brought to Paris after a bombing to sniff out the exact explosive used even though everyone already has their suspicions of who the bomber is. And I feel pretty confident that Paris already has some amazing bomb-sniffing dogs. She accomplishes her task in about 5 minutes and she's off to her private island where she conducts research on increasing the longevity of dogs, extending their lives 20-30 years. Although she's only been working on it for a few years. So, how would she know that it could extend their lives that long? Oh, well there is her mentor who is actually the one who has been working on it for years and not the main character (whose name I cannot remember and I just finished the book last night).
MC attracts the attention of Elon Musk type billionaire who is searching for said bomber as it was his building that was bombed and said bomber killed billionaire's brother 7 years earlier. But the amazing MC will be able to track down the bomber in a few minutes what could not be accomplished in 7 years with billions of dollars being thrown at the problem. Do you see where I'm going with this? There is an Olympic gold medalist niece, a snooty British assistant, a buried treasure off the coast of Egypt and evil henchmen that are quite stupid. It makes me think of the movies Sahara and Fool's Gold wrapped up together.

And I'm told there will be a sequel to this book. Hummmm.

Another great book from Iris Johansen. This one falls into the world of Eve but doesn't include her. It follows Kira she's the dog whisperer. There's action and romance. There's strong women who can take care of themselves. And there's treasure. What more could a person want? Once I started, I couldn't put it down.

Thank you to NetGalley, Iris Johansen, and Grand Central Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.

DNF. Read over 100 pages and couldn’t continue. Dialogue is trite. Main character can’t spell common sense. She’s convinced she can do anything better than anyone else. A different breed of dog would have been a better choice for the smartest dog who haver lived. Goldens are high trainable, but aren’t very bright. Her serum for increasing the longevity is science fiction.

All in all this book strains credibility and is just boring.

DNF at a generous 34%. What in the Lifetime Movie of the Week is going on here? I gave two stars bc I did like the first couple of chapters that showcased the MC, Kira, and her dog Mack. However, once the super duper rich guy entered the picture with his castles and mansions and helicopters and plane and endless resources at his disposal, the plot quickly devolved into Lifetime quality for me. Great if you like that genre; not great if you don’t.

“On the Hunt” by Iris Johansen is an adventurous 4-star read. We are introduced to Kira Drake and her highly trained golden retriever, Mack, while they are investigating a bombing in Paris that killed over 200 people. While searching for the bomber, she is approached by Jack Harlan to work together in the investigation. From there, the story takes off on a wild ride around the world.

This story started out great and captured my interest, but then it bogged down, and there were parts that moved extremely slowly. There is a heavy focus on training both dogs and horses throughout the book, which I found interesting. However, several interactions between the two main characters were confusing due to unnatural dialogue used solely to create tension. There is also a scientific aspect to the story because of some of the technology used by both sides during the hunt. Overall, I thought this was a great book, and I look forward to the next installment in the Kira Drake series.

Thanks to Grand Central Publishing, Iris Johansen, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.

Iris Johansen’s newest book, On the Hunt, was a 3-star read for me. It was not one of my favorites by this author and I have read every one of her books (along with Roy’s). This new series brings forward Kira Drake and her dog Mack with the introduction of billionaire Jack Harlan and their story as they try and extract both a buried treasure and avoid Joseph Taylor. The storyline did pick up in places and I loved the character of Fiona, Harlan’s niece, but this just did not feel like the normal Iris Johansen read with it almost feeling rushed by the author. I think the target audience for this is 16 year old girls. First time (and last) I have read her work. Writing is juvenile. Subject matter is simply boring. Kira Drake is one of the most dislikable characters I have ever read. As a matter of fact, almost all the characters were dislikable as well as unbelievable.
Id stay away from this stinker.
Started out well, then went quickly downhill after that. By the time I got half way through it was unreadable.

I stopped reading Iris Johansen about 5 years ago. All of her books are basically cut and paste. About the only thing that changes are names and locales. The main character (female) knows everything and wants you to know it. She has to do everything on her own and in her own way as she is the only one that is right. The male character goes along and indulges her. The dialogue is atrocious and choppy.

I saw this book with a new female lead character and thought maybe it would be different. The price of $15 for the eBook was ridiculous. No way was I paying that. My library had the eBook for loan. So I tried that. I was so glad that I did not buy it as the book was terrible. It is just like all of her other books. This time the lead female is Kira and the indulgent male is Harlan.

The time frame does not work for me. Kira is in her twenties. Yet she has a veterinarian degree and has been working for YEARS on her research. Her research involves extending the life of dogs for 20 to 30 years. As another reader stated, there is no way she knows her research is successful as she has not lived that long. Yet, as stated previously the female character knows everything. No matter what Kira does, she has been doing it for years. She is just not that old.

Kira and her dog are superhuman to me. They go to Paris and solve the bombing in just a few minutes. They find Taylor in less than a week even though Harlan has been looking for him for 7 years. How does she know so much more than the experts?

I read about 3 chapters and skipped to the last 2 chapters as I had had enough. It was mentioned that Donovan was dead. I did a search on his name to see how that happened. It was unrealistic. According to the author, he was grabbed by a sea snake that started eating him. Sea snakes do not eat people, they release their venom. According to the Internet, the largest sea snakes are about 5 to 6 feet. They do not just reach out and grab people and start eating them. Of course one cannot believe everything on the Internet but this just sounds like science fiction to me. Though I have never heard of a sea snake grabbing and eating someone except in science fiction. People do die from bites, but it is from the venom and very rare. Sea snakes are not known to eat people.

At least this book was free from the library. I won't be reading anymore by the author.

A solid start to the new Kira Drake series! On the Hunt delivers action, danger, and that signature Iris Johansen spark — just with a fresh face leading the way. Kira is tough, clever, and easy to root for, but this first book felt a little more setup than payoff.

Still, it’s a fun ride with plenty of potential. I’m curious to see where the series goes next. Not my favorite Johansen, but I’m definitely on board for more Kira!

It’s a simple response from me… you put a dog in a book, I’ll give it a try. This one was alright. A lot of action, but it felt like I was in a made for tv action movie a lot of the time. Rich guy, helicopters and jets, islands, henchmen shooting from forests, a mansion with a dungeon, diving for treasure… cue the suspenseful music! Not terrible, just not my genre. Not to mention, it was ALL over the place. Switched from looking for a suspected bomber to suddenly cave diving for treasure. The villain is also comical. Haven't ever had a villain/pursuer conversation last so long! That being said, the dog sure was the star of the book for me. 🐶🐾

Kira and her dog are in great demand as trackers around the world. She agrees to take on a job, for her mentor and friend. They need to track down a vicious murderer, bomber, and torturers. He really needs caught. The only problem is that Kira does not like to work with a partner. The man who is paying her bills on this trip is a pest. He has eyes on her all the time. This causes friction, and undue stress. Normally her books go very fast for me, but this one felt a bit stilted in places. I still enjoyed it though. 3 stars.

Readers, we have a new heroine plus an extremely hard “worker” dog. The plot was intriguing-experiments to help horses and dog’s potentially to live longer and work together. This reader needed more character development (but I understand, just the first book, I hope evolving into a series), a true page turner and I hope more to come. Enjoy

I like the story but I have to admit all of this author’s books are pretty similar so I didn’t love it. If I could I would give 3 and 1/2 stars but I round up most of the time. It’s always a strong woman going off on her own while a protective man gets mad and tries to save her from herself. But the animals are truly fantastic! So not a bad read but not the best read either.

This book sounded good based on the blurb. however I found the story just didn’t keep me engaged. There were to many conversations between characters that had no purpose and then the actual “thriller parts just breezed by to fast. I was disappointed in this book.
