As a note: I read this after Eat Me Up If You Can and this review is only about the main story. Once I read the extras I'll update it. I also want to clarify I am not familiar with the "If You Can" universe, so my views come from a first time ZIG reader.
4.5 stars, might round it up to 5 later. This got very close to being perfect. I have many thoughts about it and I really want to rant, so heads up that this is a long review.
Where do I even start? What a fantastic premise full of misunderstandings, drama and some angst. It sounds like the perfect formula for me, as a reader that enjoys such type of plots.
The highschool arc was the best thing from this novel, period. I absolutely loved the yearning and pining from both MCs. It was lovely to see them become friends to something more. Their initial dynamic is also perfect, I love a jock x outcast pairing, it never gets old for me.
Now this is where the rant starts, after the first arc concludes. Sigh... I was disappointed in Koi's development. I started the novel liking him a lot, but after the highschool arc was over and more things happened, I had a hard time connecting with him. Koi had gone through a lot of shitty stuff, making it easy to want to protect him, but I think the novel put more emphasis in his struggles, but didn't give the same grace to Ash.
Here is where I turn into Ash's defender because even if he is the way he is (part of it due to his alpha traits, obviously), I really believe that it's crazy how much he had to endure but the novel only acknowledges part of it near the end and it wasn't enough imo. After certain event happened, I really wanted/expected Koi to be the one chasing, but instead their dynamic became similar to their younger selves, only that this time Koi was doing some "tricks" (courtesy of Ariel).
Speaking of Ariel, I have to praise the author for making her such an amazing side character. I liked how she wasn't just there to be Koi's friend, but she also had things of her own, making her a well fleshed out female character. I was afraid that the author would go down the "evil woman" route, so I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't.
I do have to point out that Ariel's actions kind of made the second part of the story a bit unbareable because what she said had a lot of impact on Koi and Ash's relationship, often creating misunderstandings. And listen, I live for messy drama, I just wished that it was toned down because I felt like at some point it was going in circles (Ariel talking to Koi, Koi feeling insecure, Koi hidding it from Ash and assuming things until it became a big thing and he had to ask Ash direcly).
I really wish the story had given more grace to Ash in the second half, and I can easily elaborate with an example: at some point, Ariel tells him about what Koi did for him after the first arc ends, and while I get that she's on her friend's (Koi) side, the narrative makes it out as if Koi had done more for the two of them and brushes off Ash's family situation and how fucked over he got after everything. I felt that only near the end he was given some justice, but I still wanted Koi to put more effort and grow, because my other problem was how he seemed stuck in his younger self.
Ultimately, I think I went back to liking them together, but only at the very end. A good thing is that this universe got some unique omegaverse traits that were interesting and new I haven't seen in the genre. I'll definitely read more from this series.

woah ash really change since he manifest as dom alpha he was so greenflag then but now 😭😭😭😭 so that what happen when u become a dominant alpha that's why greyson, nathaniel, and kieth are like that
