David Ross specializes in maritime and railway history and has written and contributed to numerous books on these subjects. His most recent books are Ships Visual Encyclopedia, The Essential Naval Identification Guide: Submarines 1914–Present, Great Warships, and The World’s Greatest Battleships.
This is a readable, well-illustrated and informative introduction to British railway history. It is a 160-page magazine-sized paperback book.
The Contents are - P006: The Pioneering Years P034: The Old Companies P076: The Big Four P106: The Steam Railway at Work and War P128: The Last Years of Steam P142: Little Lines P152: Time Line of the British Steam Railway P156: Glossary and Bibliography P158: Index
The book covers the phases of railway history very clearly, and does not stint on the earlier phases, like so many general histories. It has a good mix of modern photographs of surviving locomotives, as well as many original photographs and contemporary illustrations, with supporting maps and artwork. Again, it does not rely on modern photographs of preserved or British Rail-period library photographs, as so many similar books do. I found it a good read, and is an excellent introductory volume for younger readers as well as being informative enough for older ones.
