Pembroke Eve Chronicles #1

Shadows of the Mind

Rate this book
Shadows of the Mind focuses on Jacob Theison, a young man who thinks he’s better than all the other folk who live in the picturesque town of Pembroke Eve. It’s no place for a modern guy and he wants to leave, try his luck on the greener pastures of ‘anywhere’ else.

That is until he realizes one thing. Deep down he’s just like everyone else, a country guy through and through. That realization comes just in time, because on a moonlit night a green glowing spaceship lands in Wilson’s field. Aliens, it seems, are real. But why are they in Pembroke Eve of all places? Pembroke is a nowhere place. And why is everyone acting weird all of a sudden, even more so than usual? Are the aliens’ friendly or do they have a more sinister reason for being here?

It seems Jacob is the only one who can see what’s really going on. But why him? What’s so special about a gay guy living in a small town? Sure, he’s never had a boyfriend, never been kissed for that matter, so why? Curious, he goes to investigate the spaceship and gets far more than he bargained for as soon as he gets over his back fence. His life will never be the same again.

I live in Melbourne, Victoria, in the land of Oz. According to my own Teenage mis-adventures, I am just an ordinary guy with a penis which likes to get me into trouble…a lot. I’ve seduced trees, copulated with watermelons, and had nice old ladies pick ants off my naked body. Yep, that’s me. Mark Alders. All round nice guy and with my brain firmly in my pants, exactly where it belongs!

So what about the here and now? Well, I am a mild, mannered post office worker by day. I have a mortgage to pay and a partner named Lee who I have been with for *cough* twenty one years *cough.* At night, my muse, the bitch, forces me into bondage and makes me sit at my computer and type out stories about men having sex with each other…all the time…over and over…in varying degrees of WTF, too!

I mean, I have stories out there about alien spiders needing humans to nourish their eggs, red-skinned aliens whose balls glow when they are sexually excited, beings who cock dock with their victims to drain them of their life force, and a young man who discovers puberty is just the start of his problems as he comes into ‘magolescence’ on his eighteenth birthday and his penis turns into a snake!

Ah, the life of a story teller. The fun never ends.

Wonderful read. Mark Alders is wonderful in making the "bizarre" into something believable. The characters are vivid. They draw you into the story and make you wonder what could possibly be next.

I never talk much about the story for fear of giving away too much. The story moved along smoothly. When I feared I had become lost the author managed to bring me back in and show me where it was all going.

I so enjoyed this book that I stayed up late reading and then even telling myself not to I went immediately to by the next in the series:)

This book was a lot of fun. It's action-packed and at the same time weird and entertaining as a sci-fi b-movie (Creature of the Black Lagoon comes immediately to my mind).

The best thing of the book is its narrator, Jacob. He is, like he often says, the only 18 years old gay in his town, Pembroke Eve. The author is very effective in writing this 18 year old boy. He seems naive sometimes and too excited, but he is always enthusiast, like you'd expect from someone his age. My kudos to the author for being able to write such a fresh, spontaneous and frank voice.

The cast of characters is interesting and varied. Callum, Jacob's boyfriend, is the most endearing of the lot, because he is insecure and caring. Their meeting is very sex-driven at the beginning, but their relationship becomes deeper as the story evolves. The way they find comfort in each other is very sweet. It's up to them, the underdogs, those regarded as losers, to save the town, and they never forget for an instant where they come from, that's why you can't help loving them by the end.

I must admit I am not such a big fan of sci-fi books, but I liked reading the story and I couldn't put it down. It's a bit confusing in places (especially the part where Mr. Barnaby & Co were tuning the field generator) and there were some misspellings, but I'm going to read the sequel, because the characters were great.

I'm quickly coming to realize that Mark Alders has quite the imagination, I never know what's going to happen next or what crazy concept will be thrown at me! And frankly, that's a very welcome breath of fresh air! His characters always seem to grab me, make me love them, and want to hear their story.

While Jacob and Callum fell for each other fast and hard, their relationship still felt very genuine and natural. Their horniness at inappropriate times had me laughing, as Suzy says "Boys"!! Their love and tenderness with each other was very sweet, I look forward to seeing them progress. I'm equally intrigued by the secondary characters, Zane, Suzy, and Mr. Barnaby, I wonder what kind of mess they will get into next...

This is my first full length novel by Mark Alders. I wouldn't call this a romance. More like sci-fi adventure with m/m romantic elements. To me it almost feels like a YA novel because of the characters' ages (18ish), except there is cussing and sex.

Together, Jacob and and his new found gang of friends will have to save their entire town from an alien invasion.

I'm loving the friendships that are forming between Jacob, Callum, Suzy and Zane. And even Mister B.

Jacob and Callum are so cute together. And Jakey is just too sweet for his own good. Although I do feel that they fell in love with each other a bit too fast but I'm not bothered much by it.

Thanks, Mark, for the story and the recommendation. I'm anxious to see what kinda trouble Jacob and his friends get into next.

I was confused a lot during this one i never knew what was happening and what was just in Jacobs head. I enjoyed the story and I love Jacob and Callum but i didn't feel the connection between them in the beginning. Not sure how to really describe this book, one of those you just have to read yourself

I don't know what to say. I can't even formulate a sentence. Every time I thought I might find something worthy in this book, I read something proving me wrong.

[spoiler ahead]Jacob's flimsy manner of falling for someone, minutes after meeting (and after lusting for another). Getting a blow job while running away from aliens, right after one of them pissed himself. Just these two elements... what a way to start the story! O_O (I probably should have stopped then) The forever mingle of sexual innuendos and foreplay with successions of running away from aliens. The clumsiness and plain stupidity of the characters, better at getting themselves n trouble than out of it... Jacob complaining to be the only gay man in that small town, only to later present at least 2 bi-men. Yes, quite the lonely soul he was, huh? And out of nowehere, Callum sharing such a private and marking experience, of being abused by his mother in a truth game? Seriously? I won't even bring up the whole "aliens want our bile' motif.[end spoiler]

I was quite disappointed by this book, so much I had to force myself to finish it. I could find nothing appealing in it.

I love how twisted Mark's mind is LOL. I actually gave this one 4.5 stars. The characters are a trip! There were funny things, gross icky stuff and generally a great story to really get lost in. I think Jacob and Callum have the honor of having the fastest courtship ever too. How Jacob cleverly defeated Zorto and his feelings about it after made him a hero in my eyes.

Ok what I thought was a little off about was when the aliens were fighting with Jacob. For a guy who went thru all that and came out with just cuts/bruises and a broken leg seems just odd. Then again it's sci-fi as it was recently pointed out to me that there's certain things you can get away with.....:D

thanks for a great way to escape reality Mark :)

Wow I really enjoyed this book. It really freaked me out. Science fiction is not normally my cup of tea but Mark's book pulled me in. I really loved Jacob and Callum and the rest of the group. All I kept thinking about, was what would I do if this happened to me( knock on wood,LOL)Don't read this if you're home by yourself, the only reason I could read it, my husband and daughter were home with me, hehe. I wonder what type of dreams Mark must have if this is in his imagination, lol Great great book!!

Wonderfully wild and crazy pretty much sums it up! I can tell this is going to be one heck of a series after just the first book. It was action packed, had tons of humor, was extremely descriptive and creative, and most important - left me wanting to jump right into the next book of the series!! I have a feeling that Mark is one of those authors that will keep you on your toes because you won't anticipate what he'll come up with next - love it!

^^MIND BOGGLING!^^

More of my reviews and thoughts on my blog PANTS OFF REVIEWS

I have no idea if this book was meant as a joke, or the author was serious. I am not saying this to discredit the authors work, but the writing and story was almost too unbelievable to be taken seriously. Yet, through all that, the book was highly entertaining and quite different from what I have read in the m/m genre.

Jacob Thieson lives in the boring ass town of Pembroke Eve, to stand out he decides to come out. So now he is that gay guy in Pembroke Eve, where he was initially avoided in the beginning, people have finally learnt to accept who he is, without completely understanding it. While getting ready for bed one night, Jacob witnesses a bright light and decides to investigate, on his way he bumps into two guys who also witnessed the bright light, and they believe it to be an alien landing on earth. That one night of discovery leads to an adventure Jacob was never expecting and finding love in the surrounding bushes while running for his life.

Seems that boring ass Pembroke Eve just got a little more exciting and Jacob has to save the day, and it seems the very reason that made him an outcast, is the same reason that will lead him to save the town with the help of a few close friends; some closer than others. It becomes a cat and mouse game of epic proportions between Jacob and his friends, and the less than pleasant aliens.

Here is what I thought the book was about judging by the cover. Sexy alien landed on earth, Jacob spots him and sparks fly and its chemistry. Yet there is an obstacle, they are from different species and it would not work and all that. That’s what I thought; I have no idea where those thoughts came from, because the blurb doesn’t even move along those lines (lol). I guess it’s a good thing that it went into a completely different direction because the book is quite unique. I even saw tentacles, but they weren’t even used for fun.

It’s a fun read, a little on the over the top side, mixed in with ‘that shit would never happen’. A massive amount of eye rolls, and sometimes a few unnecessary scenes, but what can I say doing all that might have been pure genius. I could not stop reading, and just wanted to know what kinda crazy thing Jacob would say, do, or think. I honestly look forward to reading the rest in the series, because it’s just never a dull moment in Pembroke Eve.

This was a well written, fun and creative story. I had a great time reading this one. It was very creative. The descriptions of the inside of the ship and of the aliens was excellent and I like how it wasn't common. Loved the reason they were here, now THAT was imaginative! The characters had depth to them and their banter worked well. I liked the way they saved the town. There wasn't much sex, which for me is often a downer because I like my reading devise/book to be smokin' but what scenes there were were very well done and the story was so good that I just didn't care that I was missing out on the smutty stuff ;o) I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see what happens in Pembroke Eve. This is a fantastic series!

Bizarre, but in a good way.

Jacob, an Out and Proud gay teenager tells the story of the day aliens land in the farmers field behind his house. He and his 3 new friends and the owner of the local general dollar savings store must find a way to save the town.

First person narrative which I personally find annoying. Virgin butt sex an horny times at the most inappropriate times. But, the are about 18 years old so...

Anyway, I did kind of enjoy it. The aliens were scary, I was worried Jacob & friends wouldn’t make it and there was a surprise that broke my heart.

It looks like the author is planning on more stories for this little town so I’ll have to see what the next story sounds like.

I started out a bit worried because the main characters were so young (only 18) and I was worried that I wasn't going to be pulled into the story. That lasted until halfway through the first chapter, and then I was totally absorbed. Mark really pulled off the first love thing and while sometimes I was like "no, you can have sex now! There's aliens after you and you need to be running!", I thought they were very believable scenes. I can't wait to see how these characters develop throughout the series.

I'm only mildly disappointed there was no Rambo-like water pistol or super-soaker scene.... I had my heart set on one. :)

I was surprised by this little gem. I often find that I make purchases based on a book cover and I was looking for a outerspace love story when I bought this. Ha! Maybe I should have read the synopsis! This a wonderful coming of age story. I found myself laughing (I need my own I Love Boys tee shirt) and then yelling at my Kindle "shut up and run you fools!". I have confession though, my favorite character is not our hero but his boyfriend, Callum. I would save the world for Callum too. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

It wasn't bad, but it was just...weird. Actually, I agree with other peeps. It's a rather non-erotic story and actually rather clashes with the cover.

I didn't like the random insta-love. That rang of Hollywood "logic" (read: nonlogic) to me. As for the rest...
I just wasn't interested in the plot. The characters weren't developed enough to engage me in their stories.

I DID manage to skim my way through the last half or so, so that's something?

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book but I certainly didn't expect the fantastic B-movie send up that I found. Everything is here, from the tentacled aliens, to blossoming romance and the scrappy ragtag group of unlikely heroes. In less deft hands this story would've turned into a horrible mess but instead Alders gave us a wonderfully campy send up. Not only that the characters were well developed and likable. I couldn't help but root for the underdogs and cheer and wince right along with them. While this isn't the most intellectual of reads, it's great fun and very well done at that. Just because a book is supposed to be light-hearted doesn't mean that it has to be poorly written, and Alders has succeed wonderfully in creating well developed world and characters.

I'm not usually a fan of the syfy genre because it requires a certain amount of suspense of belief and most times I just can't do it but oh gawd this story is amazing. The fact that it's so out there go hand in hand with some of the all too real and not too attractive details. I could not put this one down. Jacob and Callum are so just too cute together and although i hate insta-love this couple just seems to work. I know I wont do this book justice with my review so i would just say READ IT! I also love love loved the Author Bio at the end.

An entertaining adventure with plenty of humor mixed into a non-traditional m/m story. Alders has a unique voice in his writing that sets him apart from other authors, so he's a great chance of pace if you're ever looking for one. This book keeps you on your toes because you can never quite predict what is going to happen next, how a character is going to get themselves out of a sticky situation, or what threat lies just around the corner.

I enjoyed reading Shadows of the Mind as challenge pick by Nancy L (thanks Nancy!) because of its uniqueness and I look forward to reading more books by Mark Alders. The reason I haven't given this book stars yet is because I haven't figured out how to rate it and I want to be sure before I do so. Despite the lack of stars, I would recommend this book to fans of m/m looking for a fun adventure.

I keep running into comments about Mark Alders so I just had to read one of his books. This story is a hoot and scary at the same time. Who could concieve of green mist with slimy aliens? So campy! And yet I was on the edge of my seat wanting to make sure everyone escaped alive. Very clever story and very likable characters who learn about themselves and how to be better human beings at the same time. I will be reading the rest of this series for sure!

(Part of me was picturing the robot in Lost In Space, not for his Danger, danger Will Robinson, but the it just came to me in relationship to the "doctor" for some weird reason.)

I'm not really sure about this book and why it did not rate more than 2 stars. For a start things didn't add up, lonely gay boy in town with no others around then suddenly as the spaceship lands the 2 guys Jacob meets up with are gay. The story was OK but there didn't seem much of a pace to get things done and Callum really annoyed me because all he wanted to do was have sex with Jacob - never mind that the lives of everyone in town and their own lives were at stake.

Premise of the book was good - execution sadly lacking.

Wow. Mark was so descriptive in this book that I was able to really visualize what the spaceship, green mist, alien tables, and the such all looked like. There was just enough detail to have me figure it out, but not too much detail that I felt that it distracted from the story line. The only thing that I didn't think sat well was how quickly the MC's fell in love but I guess a situation like this could make anyone bond quickly. Great book and I am glad to finally read some much raved about Mark works. Definitely will read more of his books!

It took me a few pages to get into this story. The style is very different, and the first person POV adds to the challenge. But man, once I got into it, I didn't want to put it down. The characters are all teenagers (most of them are right at 18) and the story is very much has the voice of a young adult novel, just with the added spice of smut. The sci-fi element is just plain fun with green mist, aliens and tentacles, oh my!

This was a really weird book. I say that in a good way. As I was reading it I kept thinking, "This is such a strange book." I knew I wanted to read it because I love Mark Alders. I love the way he writes. I did not rememeber that this book was part of a series until I started writing this review. I will look for more books after I finish. Anyway, this is a good one to put on your to read list. I read it in just two evenings, so it is a quick read and lots of fun.

Mark Alders has an incredible imagination. I found this story so entertaining. I immediately loved Jacob, Callum and Zane. Suzy, not so much but she did have her redeeming qualities when she wasn't being an overly emotional. The alien world building/detail/technology was phenomenal and so believable! I'm looking forward to more adventures with the above four as they take on more x-files-esq adventures.
