Edgar Allen Poe meets Lord of The Rings in the dark Swedish forest!

My middle son read this short novel for class this month, so I decided to reread it after many years to be able to discuss it with him. There were many strands to follow up on to make sense of this ghost story featuring a powerful general and his cherished ring - a symbol of the military power that Karl XII, Sweden's "hjältekonung", or hero king, exerted over people long after he died.

Arbitrary Power!

Karl XII is an ambiguous fig

I was going to make a wisecrack about how it's ironic that this is the first Swedish book I've read considering the provenance of most of the shelves my libraries have occupied, but after a few pages of the light, exuberant style of Lagerlof's prose my memory was jogged and I faintly recalled enjoying Astrid Lindgren's books as a young child. It's strange how language-culture somehow retains a candence through translation – I feel the same about literature from Russian, Portuguese and Japanese. ...more

I read this more than 20 years ago, and had vaguely remembered it as a rather standard ghost story; poor farmer in the deep woods of 18th century Värmland is possessed by greed in a weak moment, steals a priceless ring off the corpse of an old nobleman, and death and misfortune follow those to whom the ring passes until it's returned. Gollum, gollum.

Re-reading it now, I feel a bit bad about dismissing it. Not that that's not the plot; like many of Lagerlöf's more accomplished novels, it presents

The tale is one of jealousy, vengeance, and an accursed ring that disappears for stretches of many years only to resurface at unexpected moments, bringing with it sudden deaths and various other tragedies. No, this isn’t a tale of Middle Earth, this is The Lowenskold Ring (1925), a saga of an aristocratic family's uneasy relationship with some of its less well-to-do neighbors and of a haunting, a mysterious feud that takes place on the borderline between this world and the next. In her short nov ...more

So I read this book for my Swedish class and I thought the book was alright. Never really understood what the book actually was about, but it definitely was a bit spooky, so a good book for the autumn!

First story in a trilogy. Set in Sweden. Sets up a tale of theft, false accusations, and revenge that transcends generations.

Author Selma Lagerlöf was first female winner of Nobel prize in literature.

I actually read a single volume edition of the trilogy.

These are more notes for the trilogy than an actual review, which it looks unlikely I will accomplish before returning the book to the library:

Very good and interesting read. The first book I found rather boring and not worth the read. The second book "Charlotte Lowenskold" was an excellent assessment of what evil effects can come from gossip and rash judgment. The third book "Anna Svard" finishes the portrayal of the young and pious minister whose zeal is tempered by his total lack of an interior life. A good rendering of St. John's account that one who says he loves God and hates his neighbor being a liar.

Interesting to read a classic by a classic Swedish author. Typical saga form, clear eloquent language, super descriptions of landscape and how events may have happened in the past BUT I'm not sure about the point of the saga. A critique of society, a feminist proclamation? Could be all and everything I suppose. Albeit when one understands it was written when it was and by a woman.....

No zrazu vybočia zo spoločenských konvencií 19. storočia a urobia niečo nečakané. A príbeh zrazu dostáva spád. Miestami je teda kniha veľmi napínavá. Keby nebolo jej najotravnejšieho hrdinu, dala by som knihe aj štyri hviezdy. Mladý Karol Artúr, nádherný, citlivý, inteligentný, usilovný, s hlbokými hnedými očami, mi proste vadil. A to ešte viac, keď sa da ...more

What can happen as a result of moving furniture to allow the carpet cleaner to clean, is that you find lost photos and books you always meant to read. Selma Lagerlof was the first female to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and she lived and wrote about Varmland, the part of Sweden my family comes from. Really, this is three three novels, connected by the curse of the ring (oh yes, a cursed ring). Books Two and Three are the most compelling but of course to understand the depth, you need to re ...more

The Löwensköld Ring is a short folk tale that's very medieval in nature and telling. It's a tale for the long fireside nights of a Scandinavian winter.

The story has all the proper elements for such a setting. There is mystery and intrigue set within a local framework, though the tale could easily take place anywhere in Europe.

It's a quick read that's best for winter storms when the outdoors becomes the unknown and magic lurks in the swirling snows.

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf was a Swedish author. In 1909 she became the first woman to ever receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, "in appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings". She later also became the first female member of the Swedish Academy.

Born in the forested countryside of Sweden she was told many of the classic Swed
