Recommends it for: my worst enemy

This was a story of my very own life. Not that I ever had to live with a fucking Christa that would steal my parents or anything, but I have been bullied by such mean girls all my life. They stole my pride and confidence, and pushed me back ten years. I think this book might be a big help to the young me,if I ever get a time machine.

If I were to choose a word to describe the book, I would say "annoying". The episodes from this book are most likely to happen in secondary school, not university. Simply immature and stupid.

This is the sixth novel I've read by Nothomb and a pattern is emerging. Always appearing in the first person, her narration is incredibly seductive and driving. She completely inhabits the psyche of her narrator. This is not necessarily an accomplishment when she's writing about herself, but is particularly amazing when writing about her seven year old self or, in the case of this novel, from the perspective of a sixteen year old only child who seems to live by herself at the edge of society.

:S i've heard so many good things about Amelie Nothomb that maybe I did not pick up that first book correctly...

The writing is good, it is really easy to read... But well, the story wasn't that great... Kind of boring and slow...

I'll read another one from this author and I hope the story will be mine this time ;)

Since this was Amelie Nothomb month I obviously had to read this one as well ^^.

Amelie said she is Blanche. I think in one point in our life most of us were Blanche: the brilliant, shy girl trying to be average and notice but never managing either of it. Then there's the sparkling new friend. She's just an usurper and a cheat.

Christa tries to look confident, but she's not, so she needs all world at her feet in order to feel satisfied. I hate her type, because they are the people who always take

This book is all about toxic friendships and how they can ruin you for life. Better beware!

A loner, Blanche, thought she had finally made a friend when popular girl Christa marched up to her in school. Just after a little attention, Blanche allows Christa to move into her parents home, and take over her bed (instead of the folding one she was offered.) If that wasn't enough, Christa is always putting her down, taking all of her parents attention with pitiable stories, and competing viciously wit

The idea of giving 5 stars to a book that is only 107 pages tends to rub me the wrong way. Typically to go all in on the stars I need to be deeply involved for a long period of time, thinking about the book when I'm at work, and anxious to get back to it when I get home. Considering I read this book in one day I didn't experience any of that but (even in translation) this book is so well written that if I'd had a highlighter handy there likely would have been sentences highlighted on every page. ...more
