Gender Equity & Reconciliation: Thirty Years of Healing the Most Ancient Wound in the Human Family

Rate this book
Gender equity is woefully overdue―we cannot wait any longer. Yet gender equity will wait, just as it has for thousands of years, until women and men and people of all genders co-create it together. One-sided solutions are not enough, and shame and blame will get us nowhere. The new pathway to healing and creating right relations between the genders can only be forged by courageously confronting gender injustice from all sides, and moving through the ensuing ‘collective alchemy’ to transform gender injustice from the inside out.

Inspired by the principles of Truth and Reconciliation developed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa, the Gender Equity and Reconciliation international (GERI) process has been implemented over three decades for thousands of people on six continents. Guided by the twin powers of truth and love, and supported by skillful facilitation, the GERI process―as demonstrated in this book―creates safe forums to empower the unraveling of gender and sexual
conditioning with alchemical depth and acumen, and initiate a whole new culture of gender relations and beloved community.

With contributions from dozens of GERI participants, twelve distinguished world leaders in related fields, and special inserts from such notable persons as
Stanislav Grof, M.D., Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, and Peter Rutter, M.D., this book is an invaluable resource for laypersons and professionals, politicians and psychotherapists, educators and religious leaders, who are eager to discover new proven pathways to transform gender-based conflicts and address the needs of young and old in their homes, therapy practices, organizations, and congregations across the globe.

Gender Equity and Reconciliation is a much-needed book that I wish everyone would read. If one did, they would get a genuine sense of how much abiding by gender norms has hurt nearly everyone throughout history, is hurting people today, and will continue to hurt most people in the future – especially marginalized communities. With an impressive mix of research data, personal narratives, spirituality, and politics, Gender Equity and Reconciliation shows us how the human race is suffering and offers solutions – often in the form of sharing stories and allowing those who have privilege to be uncomfortable hearing the realities that they need to be made aware of. I appreciate that the LGBTQ+ community is taken into account throughout this book.

DISCLAIMER: I was sent this book for purposes of this review, I was not paid any compensation and all opinions expressed in this review are my own and are not sponsored by the team behind the book. I am a Gender-Affirming Therapist and member of the LGBTQIA+ community (they/them pronouns).

I find this book to be a breath of fresh air on the topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion! To start, the language used in this book made it for an easy read, it did not feel like certain trainings or textbooks which use a heavy amount of academic terminology which make the barrier to entry on topics such as this difficult to understand! It covers a variety of topics which are not only important, but add a lot of necessary context to the Global viewpoints on Gender Diversity! It goes over social movements such as the #MeToo movement and emphasizes the power of bringing transgender and non-binary identities to the forefront of our attention.

The GERI program, which is explained and used as the backbone for a majority of the content expressed throughout the book is a phenomenally informative about implementations and how it came about through a variety of moral and ethical foundations of thought! It uses a lot of the modern context of how we view the differences in Gender and Sex which I often speak about being so important to developing that understanding of gender diversity, equity, and inclusion work in every area of practice/field. There is also a factor of how spirituality effects views on gender and sexuality which is key, letting go of the notion that implies anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community is lacking morals and atheist by nature - which is certainly unfounded and many LGBTQIA+ people still identify with a sector of spiritual and/or religious views.

Anyone who is looking to help themselves understand how gender diversity came about, or looking to learn how they can better serve those with diverse genders through their everyday life and/or professional settings should consider giving this book a look! Even as someone within the community and seen as an "expert" in my field, I was still able to find things in this book which was able to teach me new ways to understand the needs and concerns facing my client's and our communities! Happy to be able to write this review and 'endorse' this model/publication as a phenomenal resource in learning more about Gender Equity and Reconciliation!

I had the privilege and pleasure of an invitation to receive a copy of and review this book from the Gender Equity & Reconciliation (GERI) project! I had no idea what the nonprofit GERI was, and after reading the book and visiting their website, I’m so glad to have learned about GERI and its invaluable work.

GERI seeks gender justice for all people. They are fair to all genders, so they are just as much for #MeToo and women’s rights as they are for healing men’s wounds and upholding their own rights to be emotional, vulnerable men (ie, they’re allowed to be human) without needing to resort to power grabs or violence to be respected and seen as a “real man”.

GERI offers programs and discussion between the sexes in education, corporations, and government from all across the earth with highly trained facilitators. Clinical support from therapists is provided as needed for participants.

Very wonderfully, GERI cares about political nuance. They care as much about trans people’s rights as they do about women’s rights not being trampled and losing ground because of them. They care about free speech and avoiding #CancelCulture as much as loving kindness. They care about gay rights, and they care about children and the devastating consequences of diagnosing them with gender dysphoria too rapidly and too early with too little oversight.

Simply put, GERI *cares* about true, ethical, nuanced sex and gender discussion whether or not it’s politically expedient for or gets praise or draws fire from the right or the left, which is refreshing, wise, and desperately needed in our world where people seem to have the attitude more and more of, “If you don’t hold my political beliefs, you must be a jerk or a fool.” Refusing that attitude as much as humanly possible has been a passion of mine ever since my days of teaching media literacy, especially as it relates to my local and national (USA) politics.

There’s so much more detail than I covered, but that’s the gist!! Bravo to your work, GERI!

I was invited to review the book Gender Equity & Reconciliation by Book Publicity Services. I was unfamiliar with GERI and reviewed the website after receiving the book. The culmination of study and work GERI does is a salve for the hearts of humans today. Chapter 13 God Enters through the wound.. suggests that "each person has experienced gender injustice in some form" and that with skilled facilitation and heartfelt discussion communities can come together to begin to see one another as they are and potentially shift the narrative. Very interesting read.

I was sent a copy of this book to review by Book Publicity Services, and I will admit that I was not familiar with the GERI organization before receiving this copy. Below I have included my fairest assessment of the book. But in short, it is absolutely worth reading.

In "Gender Equity and Reconciliation," authors William Keepin and Cynthia Brix delve into the intricate layers of gender dynamics, weaving a profound narrative that transcends conventional approaches to gender equality. Their work presents a comprehensive exploration of the intersectionality between gender, power, and spirituality, offering a transformative lens through which to perceive and address gender disparities.

One of the fundamental strengths of Keepin and Brix's book lies in its interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon insights from psychology, sociology, anthropology, and spirituality. The Gender Equity and Reconciliation International (GERI) project synthesizes diverse perspectives, and the authors lay out a holistic framework that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of gender relations. They skillfully navigate through complex theoretical concepts while grounding their analysis in real-life experiences and case studies, ensuring accessibility for both scholars and practitioners.

Central to the discourse is the concept of reconciliation, which transcends mere tolerance or accommodation. GERI provides a paradigm shift towards genuine reconciliation, rooted in empathy, understanding, and collective healing. This approach highlights the importance of addressing not only the visible manifestations of gender inequality but also the underlying social structures and belief systems that perpetuate it. Through this lens, the pursuit of gender equity becomes inseparable from broader efforts toward social justice and human flourishing.

Moreover, the book offers valuable insights into the role of spirituality in transforming gender relations. Keepin and Brix challenge the dichotomy between the secular and the sacred, advocating for an inclusive approach that recognizes the spiritual dimensions of gender equity. Drawing upon diverse spiritual traditions, they illuminate the potential for spiritual practices to catalyze personal and societal transformation, fostering empathy, compassion, and solidarity across gender lines.

However, while "Gender Equity and Reconciliation" offers a compelling vision for gender justice, it is not without its limitations. The book includes a portion on transgender rights, but in light of current aggressive anti-transgender legislation (at least in the US) falls short of addressing the dire situation that transgender people are facing. Furthermore, the emphasis on spiritual reconciliation may resonate more with certain cultural and religious contexts, potentially limiting its applicability in secular settings. I would hope that future editions might directly address religious trauma among heavily persecuted marginalized communities.

In conclusion, "Gender Equity and Reconciliation" stands as a seminal contribution to the discourse on gender studies, challenging readers to envision and enact a more just and compassionate world. The thoughtful analysis and visionary proposals inspire hope for a future where gender equity is not merely a distant ideal but a lived reality for all.

I was invited to review this book by Book Publicity Services. I was not familiar with GERI prior to reading this book but I am inspired by their work.

"Gender Equity and Reconciliation" is a profound exploration into the heart of one of humanity's most enduring issues - gender inequality. Through the lens of thirty years of work in this field, authors Will Keepin and Cynthia Brix provide a compelling narrative that not only diagnoses the deep-seated roots of gender injustice but also offers a path toward healing and reconciliation.

The book delves into the origins of gender inequity, tracing its evolution through history, culture, and psychology. It examines how these ingrained patterns of inequality have shaped our societies and individuals, leading to profound suffering and division. However, instead of simply highlighting the problem, the authors present a transformative approach to addressing these issues.

Central to their approach is the concept of reconciliation - not just between individuals, but between genders. They argue that true gender equity cannot be achieved through external measures alone but requires a deep inner healing and reconciliation process. Through personal stories, case studies, and practical exercises, the authors guide readers on a journey of self-discovery and healing, inviting them to confront their own biases and wounds.

What sets this book apart is its combination of deep wisdom, compassionate storytelling, and practical guidance. It offers a holistic approach to gender equity that goes beyond policy changes and structural reforms, recognizing the need for inner transformation. Whether you are a gender activist, a therapist, or simply someone interested in creating a more just and equitable world, this book is a must-read. It not only offers hope but also provides a roadmap for how we can all contribute to healing the most ancient wound in the human family.

Reading Gender Equity & Reconciliation brought a sense of relief for me. I was grateful to read the authors’ engage in these conversations from a place of intersectionality and reconciliation. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter on LGBTQ+ healing and the emphasis on healing within community especially for transgender and gender nonconforming people who are often left out of discourse. This is a central tenet of my beliefs and work as a leader within the LGBTQ+ mental health sphere. Community is necessary for deep healing to occur and reading this was incredibly validating. True community healing takes everyone, all people of all identities, to come together, despite perceived differences, and find the common ground of humanity. This model illustrates that foundational component beautifully. Keeping & Brix have compiled a great resource for anyone who is committed to furthering social justice.

I was contacted to to review a preview copy of this book and while I normally do not accept invitations like this, I was intrigued when I read the title and brief synopsis. After review, Gender Equity and Reconciliation is a striking, open, and honest investigation into gender equity and healing through an intersectional and culturally humble lens. The various accounts from all over the world challenge the reader to consider gender from all angles, proposing blueprints for ways to move forward from oppression to equity. I believe this book is essential reading for anyone looking to understand the complexities and impacts of gender oppression and start the long work of breaking through it. Would highly recommend this read.

I was encouraged to learn through this book the incredible work being done by Gender Equity and Reconciliation International (GERI) for the past 30 years. The goal of gender reconciliation through a holistic approach using varied modalities is inspiring. This brave-hearted work acknowledges the issue's magnitude through statistics and powerful stories of wounding and healing across all cultures. This is an important read providing an understanding of the methodology's robustness and efficacy to accomplish what many might think impossible - transforming entrenched gender-based mindsets and behaviors. It also offers hope for the next generation and our collective future.

As a psychotherapist, I found this book incredibly compelling and a new lens at looking at gender dynamics. In my work, the intersectionality of my clients is of the utmost importance. This book shows how gender equity can exist in different communities and identities. All gender identities can benefit from this book highlighting our desire to heal as humans, especially now when we are living in such polarizing times.
