An excellent collection of what are in effect essays, well written and lucid, that with over a hundred black and white illustrations, provides a pertinent overview of the processes and ideas that constitute the early Renaissance in painting, architecture, and the other plastic arts. This work, although dated, still serves as a fine and stimulating introduction to the period.
Lost a star for the black and white illustrations, I should look to see if there is a version in colour. But what an excellent writer, readable and informative.
I thought it will be a nice introduction to the renaissance art. The book is about how the philosophy and interests of people in XV century had an effect on art. But the author assumes that we know renaissance art quite good! If you know all about renaissance you don't really need a book like that. I was often lost in all the information and all the names, which were new for me...
