From Harlequin Escape to exotic locations where passion knows no bounds.
I was told off as a child for making up stories—little did I know that one day I’d earn my living by writing them!
To the horror of my parents, I left school at sixteen and held a bewildering variety of jobs: I was a London DJ (in the now-trendy Primrose Hill), a decorator and a singer. After that I became a cook, a photographer and, eventually, a nurse. I waitressed in the south of France, drove an ambulance in Australia, saw lots of beautiful sights but could never settle down. Everywhere I went I felt like a square peg—until one day I started writing again and then everything just fell into place. I felt like Cinderella must have when the glass slipper fit!
Today, I have the best job in the world, writing passionate romances for Harlequin. I like writing stories which are sexy and fast-paced, yet packed full of emotion—stories that readers will identify with, laugh and cry along with.
My interests are many and varied—chocolate and music, fresh flowers and bubble baths, films, cooking and trying to keep my home from looking burglarized! Simple pleasures—you can’t beat them!
I live in Winchester, one of the most stunning cities in the world, but don’t take my word for it—come see for yourself! I regularly visit London and Paris. Oh, and I love hearing from my readers all over the world…so I think it’s over to you!
Neeeeeedy h, begging for a kiss 2 mins into meeting the H. 😬 Boring story.. the h was trying on her employer’s clothes to flip and make money cuz she wasn’t paid her wages for months when she meets the H. The H was the prospective buyer and the h was the housekeeper but she lies to him and says she’s house sitting. There’s a ONS and the h falls pregnant and the H takes off, only to return by the end of the book. Have read better from SK!
Today is the day that I’m using a template for my review just to make it easier for you that want to know details about the book.
Tropes: ONS, accidental pregnancy Ending: HEA; married with a 5 year old son. Triggers: Death of parents and a sibling Spice: 🌶️/5 Angst:🔥/5 OM/OW drama: None Celibate while separated: Yes
It was a pretty chill book. Typical HP with brooding H and nice h. Nothing new and didn’t excite me as much as I hope it would. If you’re looking for a book to pass time you def could try this. Long angst and low spice.

Tl;dr This was a book where you kept wishing the FMC would take the MMC at his word, and actually leave and go find someone who treated her well. Where you kept wishing the FMC would tell off the MMC and go find her own happiness without him.
Premise: Strangers have surprising physical chemistry ending in a one-night stand. Extremely common trope. FMC ends up pregnant. (Accidental pregnancy storylines aren't my thing, but they're so hard to escape these days, so fine.) She can't get in communication with MMC, so it's 6 months before he finds out about the pregnancy.
Then he shows up on her doorstep, and that's where the trouble starts. Yes, he takes care of practical matters--anything money-related, essentially. But in terms of building a relationship during their forced proximity situation....to say he gave her bread crumbs is being generous. Crumbs.
So we have two strangers who are having a baby together. Each spent 6 months remembering an "idea" of the other person in bed. The main thing that draws them together is still just physical chemistry. When they actually spend a couple weeks together, the reality is that the MMC gives her nothing personally or emotionally and refuses to even verbalize the existence of a baby.
And then there's the mistrust on both sides. Several arguments where they each accuse each other of using one other/questioning their motives.
Even when the physical chemistry finally boils over, and they sleep together a second time, it's such an emotional letdown for the FMC, she decides not to finish out the one month she's supposed to stay in NYC. (And he's itching to be on his own again, so he doesn't argue for her to stay.)
This MMC is the opposite of what one hopes for as a partner for their FMC. He has her grateful for the tiniest of crumbs. The FMC isn't much better. Little self-worth with only a tad of "I deserve better", but mostly, it's "He's so sexy." "I can't stop remembering the sex." "I can fix him/give him the chance he needs."
So often with these stories, there's a trope of the MMC having some family history that's holding him back from embracing a relationship. But there's a difference between an MMC who's saying one thing, but whose actions belie his words and show that he cares.....and Niccolò, who is so neglectful of her. Like, family trauma only excuses so much. As some point, shabby treatment is just shabby treatment. (It's so bad that when she opens the Xmas gift, she cynically assumes it was his assistant's work.)
So after all that, when he shows up on her doorstep (an entire MONTH after she leaves)....and says he's missed her...it's like, what? They spent two weeks sleeping in separate rooms, her barely seeing him in the mornings before he went to work, maybe eating dinners together (sans relationship-developing confidences), and one public outing....they're still basically strangers, but suddenly, he wants to be with her? On what basis?
And still, at the 11th hour, nothing has really changed--he suggests they marry--but for practical purposes. It was the worst, most unromantic non-proposal. Why? (And his confidence that she'd accept felt out-of-character. She's already left him once. He's too shrewd to have assumed she'd finally fall into the role of women trying to snag him.)
The FMC turns him down. But when he tries again, she's like, "I love you." Girl, what? Based on what? No!
Cannot recommend.

On the one hand, I loved that there was no OW/OM dramalama and no past ex's that did them wrong, etc., and I especially liked the fact that heroine was no simpering idiot who took crap and leftovers, but my pet peeve here was that there was no character or relationship development so their HEA fell flat for me.
For instance, for more then 95% of the story, heroine knows absolutely nothing about the hero. There are no deep conversations, no feelings on Hero's part to form a bond or have an interest in his baby and nothing other then sex to show me they are meant to be. A one paragraph in the end that he suddenly has a deep interest or love for the baby & baby momma does not give me the hearts & flowers that I expect when picking up a romance book to read. Yeah, he had a traumatic past with his family, but come on! Insert a few moments here & there to show me there is more to them then just sex! For Pete's sake, he showed no interest on his kid up until the end when heroine shamed him to express some interest of whether they were having a boy or girl! Lol.
I know this is HP and we shouldn't expect much, but come on! A little bit of conversations and getting to know one another would have come a long way here. Also, heroine at the end being a pushover & claiming she is not a gold digger proves the opposite when she took his money as her right. What happened to "I don't accept handouts"? And hero being a needy doormat at the end? Nope. Didn't work for me.
But I give credit to no OW drama and the fact he didn't seem to be a Manho. He said he had been celibate for over a year before he had his ONS with heroine and that he didn't have sex with women he didn't know. He had short relationships with women but he never fell in love with any of them.
As for heroine, she was a virgin.
HEA with a five years later and planning for another kid.
Poverty stricken young housekeeper on her uppers meets Drop Dead Gorgeous, emotionally damaged billionaire when he comes to view the house she works at and mistakes her for the lady of the manor. Less than an hour later after a tour of the house, they are snogging in the broom cupboard then go upstairs for an afternoon and night of amazing sex. She's a virgin, he's not had sex for a year but it's a one-off no strings moment.
No discussion of contraception etc so of course she ends up pregnant. They eventually meet up again when he finally receives her letter and comes to look for her. A bit of tribulation along the way but an HEA ensues.
Yes it's full of lots of cliches but it was great and I'd read it again.
This is one of my favorite authors but she missed the mark with this book. The h met the H, they had a one night stand and she fell pregnant. The H finds her 6 months later. The h was very weak, the H told her all kinds of ways that he didn’t want her and she foolishly still wanted him sexually. She was very naive, I didn’t like her. The H carried the guilt of his mother and sisters deaths. He had a lot of baggage and he was a jerk at times. I almost didn’t finish it, it is very bad.
Showing a prospective buyer around the country mansion she works in isn’t a typical day for shy housekeeper Lizzie. I love the classic old school HP formula. Cold, unfeeling hero, sweet pure heroine who melts his heart and their unexpected baby. Very steamy and passionate romance with great flawed but loving characters! 5 stars to one of my favourite authors!
Really enjoyed reading this beautiful love story. Love the heroine she was wise, strong and patient with the tormented hero. Also the perfect ending, the story of their new life as a family. Reconciliation with his dad and their beautiful son.
One Night Baby in one sentence? I was blown away by the emotion and the passion and wish I could read it afresh one more time! Ps Loved the ritzy NYC settings too
I have been so disappointed with recent Mills and Boon stories. Too many seem ponderous, pedestrian dnd predictable, (and not in a good way!)
This one throws us into the action straight away. We immediately see Lizzie’s situation and get an insight into her character - just before we meet Niccolo, the hero - and then we’re fully engaged in the story all the way through to the very satisfying epilogue.
I highly recommend this book - thank goodness for SK - long may she write such fabulous stories.
