East Los Angeles is brimming with anticipation. It's been years since a local high school football team had a genuine shot at the national title. Auriel Lopez is the star quarterback to make it happen. But not everyone is aboard the Lopez hype train.
One of the skeptics is Raul Jiminez, a disillusioned soldier for the Belvedere Familia who dreams of leaving gang life behind. He knows about the degrading sexual acts Auriel records to share with teammates.
Another is Detective Addison Mowbray.
When the scorched bodies of teenagers from marginalized neighborhoods start turning up around the city, it seems only a matter of time before their worlds collide.
It’s been three months since Addison and his partner Jed Perkins made a pact to eradicate the snuff club Filii Reprobi.
The renegade investigation has been progressing slowly, but that is about to change if Sean Brody has his way. Freshly retired from the LAPD and his vigilante activities, Sean has time on his hands, and blood on his mind.
However, staying ahead of the Old Man and the group isn’t easy with the detectives’ families in Filii Reprobi’s cross hairs.
Set against a backdrop of organized crime, high school sports, and a human trafficking network, the stakes have never been higher for Addison. Can he stop the monsters in time? Or will he lose everything trying?
I’m a huge fan of darker crime thrillers and anything that will take me out of my comfort zone and this book is perfect.. I had the pleasure of reading Daniel Jeudy’s Sons of Brutality book 1 back in 2021 and have been eagerly awaiting his next book.
The Old Man: Sons of Brutality book 2 “Set against a backdrop of organized crime, high school sports, and a human trafficking network, the stakes have never been higher for Addison. Can he stop the monsters in time? Or will he lose everything trying?”
Once again we have interwoven characters/stories set in the dark underbelly of LA, we get to see all the ugliness. The book is perfectly dark and disturbing and the author doesn’t shy away from any details. I loved the writing, pace and characters, even the good guys are shady. If you like some fast paced action and grizzly details, this edgy thriller will appease your dark soul. Looking forward to the next book! 4.5⭐️
I ordered a printed copy from Amazon in December, that has yet to arrive, so I read this on my flat mate’s kindle and I’m looking forward to reading my physical copy when it gets here all over again, Daniel Jeudy burst on to the scene with the first chapter of his Filii Reprobi trilogy, the Sons of Brutality, and now he takes us back to their dark, terrifying, and sadistic world with this second instalment, The Old Man. There’s a new killer on the scene hiding in plain sight, Addison, and Perkins begin a dangerous crusade that will lead them to darkness both inwardly as well as out, and an alliance is formed with a killer. Through Jeudy’s meticulously fleshed out characters, and carefully constructed narrative style, the next chapter of this spectacular series is here, and I have to say it was worth the wait. A well-deserved five stars from me, I’m both eager and terrified for the next one.
What a ride! Thrills and chills aplenty in what is a sensational follow up to Sons of Brutality. I was hoping Daniel Jeudy would maintain the rage in this second book in his series and he didn't disappoint, seamlessly transferring characters into yet another brilliantly woven plot. Can't wait for more.
This was the last book I read during my holiday reading marathon. (okay more like a mini marathon) I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, and the author has taken things up a notch here. Fantastic read.
