Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.
Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."
Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.
Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.
Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.
Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."
This is the fourth book in this series. They can be read as standalone books. I have read the third book but not the first two books. I wasn’t lost of confused. I have put them on my TBR list though. The characters bridge across all the books. Tommy and Stef begin their story in the last book. Tommy helps Stef with her lieutenant exam and that is how the discovered they might want more. Now that she has passed and they are the same rank they can try things out. However, someone from Tommy’s past comes back and makes things complicated. Will it be too much for Stef. She worries about how having a relationship with a fellow firefighter will look to others. She has been burned by this before. Tommy just wants Stef to let him in. He will show her how great they could be together. This book was a great read. On the shorter side of the books, I have been reading lately which was nice. I like the characters. Tommy is so responsible and kind. He is in a hard situation but he doesn’t want it to affect him and Stef. Stef must decide how much she is going to allow what others think of her to affect her life. Will she miss out on what she really wants just because of others? The ending is a bit of a surprise but a great one. I look forward to reading more of these books in the future. There is also a series about the sisters of fire. Great job Kathryn.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
While this is part of a series, you don’t have to read the prior ones to fully understand and enjoy this story (BUT I would highly recommend it as they are delightful stories on their own.)
I just want to say first off that this story really opened with a bang! I know this author has investigated the fire department thoroughly over the years. Her stories are incredible. I feel like I am right there in the middle of the scene. The details that she gives in a fire emergency is just so incredible.
This is a wonderful first responder romance. It is a little on the sexy side. I highly recommend this enchanting story.
In the fourth installment of The Brothers of Fire series, we get up close and personal with Tom Mancini and Stefanie (Stef) Stevens. We’ve met them in previous books and know he’s helping her study for her Lieutenant exam and now the sparks are flying. Pun intended.
Stef and Tom were a great match on paper, however with their positions within the station, it was more difficult in real life. She understandably wants to keep things professional with her rising in the ranks of a male dominated occupation-not risking the chatter of how she got there. Sucks, but it is still a man’s world sometimes. Tom is so sweet, maybe a bit of a glue stick, but so good for Stef if she would let that guard down a smidge.
The minute they decide to give it a go, all hell breaks loose in their respective personal and professional lives and the book becomes very interesting in how it will all finally play out.
The book is well written and a great addition to the series. All the brothers and family make appearances throughout. While Scorched can be read as a standalone, as the author gives a cast of characters in the beginning of each book, they are much more fun when read in order.
We are back in Crystal City with the Brothers of Fire. A group of friends, all firefighters that meet every so often as a means of support for one another. One of these men is LT Tom Mancini. Tom has been attracted to Stefanie Stevens, the firefighter he helped study for her LT test, but it wasn’t until he was no longer her superior, that feelings between them are revealed. At first they were keeping their relationship quiet, and when they might have been ready for more, a woman from Tom’s past delivers information that will likely end the relationship and change Tom’s future forever. Will they survive this new development? Will Tom take charge of his life? Will Stefi be by his side? Once again, the author delivers a story filled with real life situations. Those not always easy to face . The main characters were well developed and the story engaging. It also gave this reader the opportunity to “visit” with characters from previous stories. Looking forward to the next story in this series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I have a weakness for mouthwatering hot firefighters, so I've totally loved the Brothers of Fire series, but there's more to these heroes on top of that yumminess. It's great to see a group of people supporting each other no matter what, and that's what these brothers do for each other, plus, our heroines are strong as well. It's Tom's turn in Scorched, and Stef is his perfect match, but it's not so easy. She's a firefighter, and we all know despite the fact that it's getting better in this field, it's still quite the boys club. She's very aware of how important her reputation is so she's going to keep it perfect which is why she has a rule of not dating firefighters. However, despite her best efforts, they get closer & the sparks really start flying like crazy so maybe they can take a chance on something great but then BAM! A monkey wrench is thrown into the mix so will it make or break them?! I loved every minute of this story, and if I had one complaint, there weren't any more pages LOL! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This fourth installment in the Brothers of Fire series was filled with ups and downs. We get to know Tom Mancini and Stefani "Stef" Stevens. At the end of the 3rd book Tom was helping Stef study for the lieutenant's exam for Crystal City Fire Dept. and they were getting to know each other.
Life is messy and just as Tom & Stef are getting their footing as a "relationship"; a wrench is thrown into their ideal plans ... you know the saying that goes something like: "How do you make God laugh; you make plans." Yeah, that about puts an end to their budding romance. Of course, while trying to not be romantically involved; stuff happens that keeps throwing them together. Especially Stef's mom; she sees their relationship as a plus for her daughter.
Will "the stars align" and give Tom and Stef their chance at a happily ever after?
Scorched ~ Brothers of Fire #4 by Kathryn Shay When you pick up a Kathryn Shay book you know instantly it's going to be good. I was engaged from the very beginning until the end of this story, Scorched, follows another firefighter in this fantastic series. This time we have Tom's & Stef's story both work at CCFD, and Tom a Lt. has been coaching Stef for her Lt.exam. Scorched is book four in the series that I have been following and reading from the very first beginning and I enjoyed every story in it. Each story is about a different Brother of Fire. If you’re looking for a sweet romance, and interesting firefighters then these are definitely the books for you. I can’t wait for the next books to release. How will Tom & Stef overcome the news from a previous girlfriend? Will they get their HEA? This book is so good that my words will not do it the justice it deserves.
Scorched is the fourth book in the Brothers of Fire Series and each of the firefighters’ stories has been better than the one before. Tom has had an eye on Stef for a while but with them both being firefighters, a relationship at times seems impossible, especially when women firefighters have such a hard time getting respect. But Tom helps Stef study for her lieutenants exam and when she passes, their celebration takes their relationship into new territory. But even though they have admitted their feelings to each other, Stef is still hesitant to let the whole CCFD know about them. When they finally think they are on solid footing, a past girlfriend of Tom’s drops a bomb on them and they have to figure out how to navigate their new romance through. Great read! Can’t wait for the final books.
Stef was going through training to become a Lieutenant in the fire department and Tommy helped her along the way so now that they are both lieutenants, he feels it's time to take his shot and to show Stef how he truly feels about her. She already has a reputation that was spread falsely, and she is worried about how this will work out for them. Does she take the risk on Tommy and their love or does she put her career first. Tommy knows what he wants but he also wants her to choose him. I am absolutely in love with this series and all of its characters. I highly recommend reading this series in order for the most enjoyment of all these crazy characters. Definitely cannot wait till the next book!
Tom Mancini and Stefanie Stevens are both fire fighters and lieutenant in the Crystal City Fire Department. They are also seriously dating, even though Tom has never actually told her how he feels.
After a beautiful night together, Tom is finally getting up the nerve to express his feelings to Stefanie, when his doorbell rings. The visitor is Lila, Tom’s last girlfriend, who has come to tell Tom that she is seven months pregnant with his child.
This complication is a huge obstacle for Tom and Stefanie to work out. Is it really his baby? Is Stefanie willing to stay with Tom in spite of this baby?
These questions are difficult for the couple to figure out without destroying their relationship. Readers will be shocked to find out how the author works everything out.
Scorched is a great addition to the Brother of Fire Series. I have liked Tony Mancini ever since he was introduced in this series. He’s a good, caring and loving man to his grandparents. He is also good at his job and has a strong relationship with his “brothers” In the department. When the unexpected comes into his life he steps up and does the right thing although it really isn’t a sacrifice for him. He has feelings for another firefighter, Step Stevens, although she is fighting the attraction. This is a lovely romance between two people who really deserve their happy ever after. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Scorched is book 4 in the Brothers of Fire series by Kathryn Shay and a well written addition to this series. 4.5 stars
Tom, Mancini and Stephanie Stevens are firefighters at the same station. He is a lieutenant and has helped Stef study for her lieutenants test. She passes her test and gets promoted, their attraction to each other grows and they start a relationship until a former girlfriend of Tom’s shows up. Where were their relationship end up…up in flames or possibly a HEA? Only time will tell…
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the fourth book in this incredible series, and this is Tom and Stef’s journey. Tom helps Stefi study for her lieutenant exam, and after he is no longer her superior, their relationship develops into more. When Tom’s ex-girlfriend show up, she throws a wrench into their plans, will this be the end of their relationship? This is a well written easy to read story, which family, friendships, emotions, turmoil, romance, twists, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and steamy page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
The Brothers of Fire books keep getting g better and better! Scorched was book 4 in this series about two firefighters Tom and Stef. Tom had been helping Stef to study for a Lieutenant exam so she would be ready. She passed and as you can guess, they get close. But Stef has a rule to NOT date Firefighters for many reasons, mainly her reputation. But can she old out? But then some happens in Toms life to really through a wrench in everything. I could not put this book down and feel in love with the characters. I couldn’t believe when it was over cause I wanted it to still go! This whole series has been great, they are definitely fun reads.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Stef doesn’t want to do anything that could derail her career as a firefighter and that includes getting romantically involved with a co-worker. The connection between them is hard to deny but will it be enough to overcome all the challenges they find themselves facing.
Tom knows that getting involved with Stef isn’t without its complications, but he believes she might just be worth it. The only problem is they aren’t only facing the complications of working together but his past as well.
I enjoyed spending time with Stef and Tom as they realized what was truly important and that they were stronger together than apart.
I always enjoy her books of the work they do, a new love comes, and not always smoothly as this was about. Tom and Stef keep their feelings in check until she passed her test. When a complication came knocking on his door, and how to handle it, he didn't want to lose Stef. A plot that unfolds of how they decided what they wanted and took steps for this new love to unfold. With the help of his Brothers of Fire they helped him, and how they work together as a team on the job. Given arc for my voluntary review
If you’ve read previous Brothers of Fire books, reading this one will be like meeting up with old friends. If you haven’t, I suspect your TBR list will be longer by the time you put this down. This is Tom and Stef’s story – he helped her with the lieutenant exam, and they’re now on equal footing. But Stef’s been burned before, and a wrench of note is thrown into their relationship. Add the firehouse drama to personal drama, and you get Scorched. It’s a good read with a satisfying ending – and a deep desire for more Brothers of Fire.
A wonderful addition to the Brothers of Fire, Tom has helped Stef pass her LT test and feeling have stirred in them now. Stef wants nothing to hinder her climbing the ladder in career though. Soon they can't fight off attraction but she wants to keep it a secret. Tom has a life changing situation, will Stef accept it?
Loved Tom, such a wonderful man, care for his grandparents and well respected LT on the fire department. Stef is very likable too, I enjoyed watching her come around in their personal life. THis is the fourth book in the series but can easily be read as a stand alone.
This book is another home run for Kathryn Shay. Her characters feel like friends that you know & make me want to be a part of their group. After reading her books you want to go back & reread all the other books in the same series to reacquaint yourself with them. I loved the story of Tom & Stef and watching how their friendship slowly changed into something more. I especially liked the surprise at the end!
The Brothers of Fire continue again in this book which is primarily about Tom and his friendship with Stef who has been promoted to Lt and therefore allowed to have a romantic relationship. Unexpectedly Tom finds out he has fathered a child but he and Stef overcome this and continue their relationship. The remainder of the Brothers are also featured in the book and their tight bonds are further explored.
This is book #4 in the Brother of Fire series. It is great to be back with the Brothers of Fire. Tommy helped Stef with the lieutenant exam. Read to see what happens. Stef is worried about what others will think and she wants to climb the FD ladder higher.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
CAWFILE: 8.86 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Recommend this book? Yes! Author? Yes! Read more from this author? Yes!
Tom and Stef ate a great team. He has helped her pass her LT exam. Their attraction is great. Stef doesn't know if she wants to pursue a relationship because of her new job. She doesn't want anyone to think she got here on anything but her own merits. When they decide to make a go, reality steps in, and Tom's past comes back. This is a wonderful quick read that will introduce you to two new firefighters. Stef and Tom are likeable characters and you'll hope they too can find their HEA
Both well-loved firefighters, Tom helped Stef pass the lieutenant’s exam. Are workplace romances ok? This is book 4 in author Kathryn Shay’s Brothers of Fire series. The main characters are honorable and lovable, especially Tommy. I enjoyed reading their story and getting caught up in their lives. I was surprised when the book ended, as I wasn’t ready!
I really liked Tom and Stef! They have a great connection, with a good mix of sweet and spice. Their story has ups and downs, things left our of their hands, and shows a great group of friends and family around them. It's another great read in this series!
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Scorched is the 4th book in Kathryn Shay’s Brothers of Fire series. Book 4 tells of the trials of working together and having a relationship. Lieutenant Tom Mancini and fellow lieutenant Stef Stevens can’t deny their mutual attraction but it becomes complicated when Tom’s ex shows up claiming he is the father of her unborn child. In the end, love conquers all.
This is the fourth book in the Brothers of Fire series and so far it is my favorite. I like how Tommy and Stef seem to me meant to be together. I would have liked to see a bit more interaction between Stef and the baby but it is a very good book and a great addition to the series.
Scorched is the fourth book in the Brothers of Fire series, and it follows the story of Tom Mancini and Stef Thomas. This is a standalone as are all the books in the series, though the cast interconnects between books. These two have always felt that draw to each other but were hesitant to act on their feelings. Tom has a history of being burned by women, and Stef is focused on her career and doesn't want to let anything distract her. Now that she has climbed the ladder and they are both the same rank Tom feels it's time to test where this might take them. It may take a bit of persuasion to get Stef on board and the unwanted blast from his past is not helping his case
This has it all action, a suspenseful plot, found family, a touch of angst, and as I have come to expect from this series a whole lot of steamy smexy. The characters are well-developed and relatable The romance is believable - You will be rooting for these two If you're a fan of firefighters or romance novels, then you'll want to check out Scorched.
Tom and Stef are just friends. But, circumstances start to change their dynamic. I like this author's books and this one was so good as well. This author has a way with making her characters relatable. Enjoyed
