Kathryn Shay

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

I enjoyed this book/novella. The main characters of Jarek and Lacey seem like polar opposites on the outside. They meet by chance one evening when Lacey's fiancé decides he wants some variety in his life and she finds out he was cheating on her. To assuage her feelings of rejection she stops in at a "biker" bar. That's how they meet. They think this was a wonderful one-night stand and they'll never meet again. Each has thought about their encounter in the weeks after. Then, by chance, Jarek's fire fighting team is called in to an apparent drug overdose at the clinic where Lacy volunteers. Needless to say; their surprise at seeing each other again was palpable.... This begins their discovery/rediscovery of each other.

Jarek, firefighter/EMT, comes from a large, loving, close-knit, Polish family. He is former military, having served in Afghanistan. He has a difficult time expressing himself/showing his emotions and tends to keep himself closed off from others; mush to the consternation of his co-workers/subordinates. Lacey is an only child, born into a wealthy family. She is a psychiatrist; currently the department head at Memorial Hospital and volunteering at the local clinic. Until recently, she was engaged to the son of close family friends. So, as you can see, not a lot of commonality for these two; but, hey, opposites attract and all that, right?

I enjoyed getting to know Jarek and Lacey and learn about the trials and tribulations of their relationship(s). All-in-all a well written, smooth flowing, character driven story. My only reservation with giving this 5 stars was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed and tied up a little too neatly. I am anticipating that we'll learn a little more about Lacey and Jarek in the rest of the the Brothers of Fire series; so perhaps it's just my problem....

Took Me a Second

As a big fan of the Sisters of Fire series, I figured checking out the brothers was a no-brainer. Kathryn Shay did such a nice job with her character detail in the first series and this time around is no different.
While we get a quick rundown of characters that will be in the series, this first book focuses on Jarek and Lacey. Jarek is a firefighter and Lacey a psychologist. They met in such a cute way it had me worried about the insta-love I’m not a fan of, however that wasn’t the case.
Jarek and Lacey’s story is more of opposites attract, him the guy from the other side of the tracks and her, the rich girl, although they are both in their mid-thirties. I liked that Jarek was a huge family man, still having Sunday dinners at his parents’ house, staying close with his siblings. Lacey’s parents aren’t as warm and fuzzy and of course think she’s way too good for him. Lacey was slightly annoying with the constant pressure for Jarek to “open up”. Sure, she’s a psychologist, but come on, give the guy a chance.
The book is well written and, as the first in the series, was a lot to take in. We are surrounded by Jarek and Lacey’s friends and family, with a focus on the rest of the Brothers of Fire. I wasn’t too sure about these men and all the sharing of feelings, but it worked out in the end, and I found it very refreshing to see a group of men put aside the stereotypes and help each other with their various situations. All Fired Up is a great start to the series!

This story introduces the readers to a new series about the brotherhood of firefighters and the formation of a support group amongst the men in their station.
Captain Jenko Zenko is one of these men. The pain Jenko experienced as a soldier in Afghanistan has left him keeping part of himself hidden from others. The pain of having lost his brother during that time is one he doesn’t divulge to anyone. Even his family.
Lacey Roth is a respected child psychologist that spends part of her time as the head of psychology at the local hospital and the other time helping others in a small clinic.
These two meet by chance in a bar, spend the night together, and even though the connection was off the charts, they never expected to see each other again.
When they do, a relationship begins. But what happens when Jenko meets her wealthy parents? What happens when Lacey finds out that Jenko has been keeping a secret from her? How can she trust him if he doesn’t trust her?
What I enjoy most of this author’s stories is that she presents real life situations with mature individuals that like most of us, are flawed and struggling to find happiness in life. Life is messy but it can also be wonderful when you find the one that “gets you”.
My only objection was that I felt the ending was a little abrupt. But that is a personal comment.
Looking forward to more stories in the series.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Jared Zenko meets Lacey Roth at a bar one night, shortly after she ends her engagement to a cheater. Jared and Lacey spend the night together anonymously, but often think about the other as time goes by. They run into each other a couple of months later, and Lacey learns Jared is a firefighter and a war veteran, while Jared learns that Lacey is a respected psychiatrist. He figures she is far out of his league, and basically gives up. She figures that it can’t go anywhere because she comes from a wealthy family who would never accept him, but would like to see him again. Around this time, a friend of Jared’s decides to start a small group of men from the fire department to support each other, much like the sisters of fire that women firefighters started in the same town. Jared decides to join, thinking it might help him be more open to Lacey.

There are challenges and family dynamics that cause a few issues for these two before they can find a HEA ending. Nevertheless, they persevere and readers also get to see the awkward start of the Brothers of Fire. This series has a lot of potential and Ms. Shay has the ability to delve into serious as well as tough circumstances and write about them with empathy and understanding. The story got 4 stars instead of a 5 because some of the dialogue felt a bit forced, and just didn’t flow as naturally as expected. Regardless, the story is definitely worth reading.

This is a heartwarming novella about two lonely, lovable characters who do not realize they are looking for love and happiness until they meet each other. Unfortunately, they have obstacles from that life that make it difficult for them to just fall in love and live happily ever after.

Jarek, a firefighter and Lacey, an adolescent psychiatrist, meet at a bar. Lacey’s fiancé has just broken up with her, and she just wants to forget it all. However, the chemistry between these two people is so hot that they cannot stay away from each other. Thus, they have a one-night stand but, they choose to remain anonymous.

They meet again professionally when the fire department is called to help one of Lacey’s patients. They have continuously thought about each other since their time together. Therefore, their steamy chemistry makes it impossible for them to stay away from each other.

Unfortunately, their relationship is not without obstacles. Lacey’s stereotypical mother does not approve. And, Jarek’s Afghanistan experience keeps him from becoming too close to people.

In spite of that, Lacey and Jarek fall madly in love, and their generous, sensitive and loving personalities manage to overcome their problems. It is obvious that Lacey and Jared are soul mates.

Lacey and Jarek’s honest and caring personalities capture the reader’s heart and never lets it go.

All Fired Up is an excellent, very enjoyable read. Great characters, Main characters *and* Secondary characters are both very well developed, full bodied & flawed (but what human isn't flawed?) Well...one secondary character is a bit more flawed than the others - snooty, rude, uppity & in serious need of being knocked down a few rungs!

Jarek is a firefighter while Lacey is an adolescent psychiatrist. They meet in a bar one night when neither gives their names but have the best one night stand ever. They re-connect when one of Lacey's patients has a seizure and needs them.

Jarek is a strong firefighter & Lacey is a caring, gentle psychiatrist who encourages Jarek to address the 'something' he's holding on to. Tim at the fire station starts up a Brothers of Fire group, where the guys, including Jarek, can come together & share about what's going on in their lives, be it a divorce, a death, meeting a movie star, etc. It's fun watching these firefighters open up about theirs fears, worries watch them grow, both as individuals & as a team of firefighters who must be able to intrinsically trust each other during their runs.

I love Kathryn Shay's books! They're always well developed and grabbed the reader quickly. I gave this book 4 Stars for one reason only - I wanted Jarek & Lacey's story to go on for many more pages!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

What a fantastic way to start a new series. I adore all of this author's work BUT her firefighters are something extra special.

I adored Jarek and Lacey. Jarek is a Polish firefighter. His family is adorable, down-to-earth and lovable (well except for one brother and his wife! Just my opinion.) Lacey is a polished child psychiatrist. She comes from money but that doesn't mean much to her.

Can these two totally opposites comes together and make a future together? Will secrets keep them apart? Can a dangerous situation be the thing to end these two? Well you will have to read for yourself!!

This is written in a dual POV format. That is a favorite of mine. Getting that glimpse into the both of the main characters' thoughts really help me to better understand and connect to them.

I felt like I was watching a movie while reading this novel. The plot just flowed so smoothly. I was really sorry to see the book end but now I can't wait for the next one in the series. I hope all of the men that make up the Brothers of Fire get a book!!!!

This is a slightly sexy read. There are no over the top graphic details so you could just skip over those.

Good read!

Good start to this series!

When Dr. Lacey Roth meets a stranger in a bar after her fiancee breaks up with her, she never expected to see him again. But when a patient of hers has a seizure, she calls 911 and the same guy, a firefighter arrives on the scene.

Jarek is the Captain of his firehouse. But he's been holding off on getting too close to people due to what happened when he served in Afghanistan. Losing his little brother in the same war nearly destroyed him. But he can't seem to forget the gorgeous woman he met two months ago either. When he sees her again at the hospital, he's shocked.

They try dating but he's so closed off, Lacey tells him that she can't be in a relationship with someone who refuses to open up. So when a bunch of other officers form a group to meet once a week to talk about real life, Jarek decides to give it a try. Only Jarek never told Lacey about his dead brother, even though she cried in his arms when she talked about how her own brother died. When she finds out, it destroys everything they had.

His lack of honesty and trust destroys their relationship. Can Jarek make things right with the woman who owns his heart?

A must read!

All Fired Up kicks off a new series by Kathryn Shay, and I'm already hooked completely. Jarek is a firefighter & former military (with a bit of PTSD) who has some issues letting people get close to him. Lacey is a child psychiatrist who is going through a bit of a rough patch after her fiancé blindsides her. These two meet at a bar, and the sparks were flying so they decide to have a night of fun, but after that hot night, they couldn't get the other out of their minds. They come face to face unexpectedly again when he's called to the clinic she volunteers at, and those sparks are still ever present so they can't stay away from each other but not everyone is happy about them. All Fired Up packed a big emotional punch that hit my heart hard, but it also filled it up when the smoke cleared. I LOVED Jarek & Lacey so much, and was cheering them on the whole time I was reading so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

All Fired Up is a great beginning for a new series about a subject this author does so well which is firefighters. Ms. Shay is extremely knowledgeable regarding this group of heroes and makes the reader feel like they are right in the middle of the story. All Fired Up introduces new and very interesting characters which makes for a page turning story. I immediately liked Jacek and Lacey as they were so well matched, had heart-break in their backgrounds and seem to fit together quite nicely. While Jacek has a great and supportive, large family who are lots of fun, Lacey’s parents are harder to be around. All the guys that are a part of Jacek’s work group all totally have his back and will definitely have interesting stories of their own which I’m looking forward to. I totally recommend All Fired Up for a nail biting read about men and woman who really do go the extra mile.

Katherine Shaw is writing about firefighters again. This time it’s male captains. One of the men has decided that they all need what the women have…..a group of compatriots who face the same challenges and need to vent and communicate their problems (and victories) with each other.
Jarek meets a woman at a bikers bar and has a one nite tryst with her without names and numbers being exchanged. A few weeks later he finds himself running into her again during a hospital emergency. He asks for her number but she refuses to give it to him. They run into each other again and this time they do connect. Love blossoms between them until Jareks reticence to face and deal with the loss of his younger brother in Afghanistan causes Lacey to stop seeing him.
This is a great book and I look forward to reading the stories of the other men.
Shay has once again written a wonderful book!

When I first read a Kathryn Shay book it involved firefighters so I was excited to see a new series revolving around firefighters again. This book revolves around the Brothers of Fire. A group of men who may be strong on the inside but have some internal issues to work out. Book 1 focuses on Jerek, a war veteran and current firefighter. Jerek and Lacey meet in an unlikely place for both of them and they hit is off instantly. When they run into each again they can't deny the attraction but each person has their own reason for not wanting to pursue things further. When they finally decide to give it a try they face some obstacles that they aren't sure they can overcome. What I like about these books is its authenticty . The author doesn't sugar coat their feelings and reactions. I can't wait until the next book in the series.

I was excited when I heard Kathryn Shay has a new series coming out and I knew from the first few pages of All Fired Up that it sure looks like Brothers of Fire is going to be yet another hit series for this very talented author. This is Afghanistan war vet Jarek Zenko and adolescent psychiatrist Lacey Roth’s journey.
Jarek is not looking for love but a meeting with Lacey has him feeling things he didn’t think possible and as this couple get to know each other it seems love is what the heart wants…….so what does the future hold for this couple, one click now to find out.
My heart broke at time’s as I got to know Jarek and I adored the Lacey the woman I would love to call a friend. The journey is heartwarming and the characters wonderful and that that leaves me excited for what’s to come in Brothers of Fire.

The start of a new series. We are introduced to the Brithers of Fire group. Given background on each of them.
First up is Jenko. He comes from a tight-knit Polish family who dine together every Sunday and support each other in many ways.
Lacy Roth is a psychiatrist who comes from money. While she works at the hospital as head of psychiatry, her work at the clinic brings here the most satisfaction.
These two meet at a bar and share a wild night. Thinking they won't see each other again.
Wrong. Once they discover each other again their attraction is off the charts. But can the closed off Jenko be open and honest with Lacey? What about their family's accepting the other?
Jenko and Laxy have a lot in common but unless honesty is complete their relationship may not work.

All Fired Up is the first book in the Brothers of Fire series. I loved the Sisters of Fire and can’t wait to read about these male firefighters who each have their own issue to wrestle with. We start with Jarek Zenko who is a veteran who carries the guilt of his younger brother who followed him into the military and passed away. Jarek doesn’t let anyone get too close – male or female. However one night he meets Lacey Roth in a bar and they both find a way to worm into each other’s hearts. Lacey is a therapist to sharing feelings is everything for her. She has to really work hard and exhibit a lot of patience with Jarek if they want to make this relationship work. A great start to what is going to be a great series!

A great start to a new series by Kathryn Shay. I love all of her firefighter stories. It shows the true brotherhood of this occupation and the start up of a group of firemen for support. This story focuses on Captain Jenko, who fought in the war in Afghanistan and now keeps to himself until he meets Lacey, a child psychiatrist at the bar. They have a sizzling one night stand, but expecting anything out of it. They meet again by chance, and a relationship develops even though they are opposites in their lives. But soon Lacey finds out the Jenko is keeping a bug secret from her, can the find their HEA.

Loved this book, read in one sitting. Loved the chemistry between Lacey and Jenko. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Despite her privileged lifestyle Lacey has decided to use her skills as a child psychiatrist to not only work at the hospital but volunteer at a clinic. After her engagement ended to a man her parents deemed suitable she finds herself in a bar where she meets Jarek and they spend a steamy evening together.

Jarek is a firefighter who keeps the events of his past a secret and doesn’t allow anyone close. When he meets Lacey she makes it clear the only way they can be together is if he is willing to be open with her but the one thing he can’t talk about might be the one thing to drive them apart.

From their first meeting Jarek and Lacey were drawn to each other so even though they had some setbacks along the way there was no denying that they belonged together.

All Fired Up (Brothers of Fire Book 1) by Kathryn Shay
I really enjoyed the H/h in this book - Jarek (fire captain) and Lacey (adolescent psychiatrist). They both have tons of baggage and losses in their lives. They have wonderful friends and co-workers who try to help them navigate their relationship. There is angst, some family resistance, laughter, tears, heartache, some danger and plenty of steam to get us to a very HEA. Noah's story THE RESCUE. Thank you, Kathryn, for sharing this book with me.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Tragic Happily Ever After Page-turner Easy-to-read Action-packed Informative Funny Wonderful characters Steamy Tear-jerker Entertaining Romantic.

Jarek and Lacey meet the first time by chance in a bar and share one hot night but never exchange information. Several months later they come in contact during a work situation and find there is still an attraction to each other. Their backgrounds couldn't be more different but they each have a tragic loss of a brother. Jarek can't move past the loss and doesn't talk about his feelings or sense of guilt over his brother's death. Honesty is important to Lacey after coming off a bad relationship so when she finds out he hasn't shared that, it could be the end of any possible future together. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.

This is the first in a new series and this is Jarek and Lacey’s story. Jarek is a war veteran and firefighter, and Lacey is a renowned psychologist. These two meets one night in a bar, but they both hide their identities, only to cross paths a few months later. These two appear to be polar opposites, yet they are both lonely, and they compliment each other perfectly. This is a well written story which has family, friendships, challenges, romance, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to a steamy and heartwarming story.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

This is a great start to this new series. The book introduces us to the different characters that we'll be reading about throughout the series. Jarek and Lacey have a spicy meeting and that connection was there from the start. They both have amazing, strong hearts, yet both have suffered loss and handle those things differently. There's some ups and downs between them, some growth and a little bit of nail biting mixed in. I was hooked on these characters, I'm curious about the others and am looking forward to more to come.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I was so excited when I heard there were going to be more Firefighter books, I was like YES PLEASE! Well, this story does not disappoint! I got sucked in right away and did not want to put it down. This is the first in a new series for Brothers of Fire and called All Fired up staring Jarek & Lacey. They come from two different worlds but doesn’t stop them! There are some up and downs in the book but definitely keeps you engrossed in the story. I cannot wait for the next book as you get a peak of what it will be about in this book! Happy reading!

This is another great firefighter book from Kathryn Shay. I love how she incorporated some of the characters from her previous books into this one but you could enjoy the love story even if you hadn't read her other books. She writes strong characters that you love & want to get to know better. My only problem was that I wanted more but know that we will get more of these characters in the other books in this series.

This is the first book of a new series about 6 male firefighters who start a “Brothers of Fire” group. They meet to discuss their problems and support each other. Jarek Zenko is an Afghanistan war vet who is having trouble dealing with personal tragedy. Lacey Roth is a psychiatrist who deals with teens. When they meet they are instantly attracted to each other and work hard to overcome family differences to be able to be together. I loved this book and can’t wait for the others in the series.

As officers over the firemen, an idea to find a family group for them. To watch games, play darts a chance to have a support group for them as leaders.
The love interest comes from Jared, he had baggage and he fell hard for Lacy.
Who wouldn’t with her sweet smiles, working with kids and known as the biker girl. A delightful new series that readers will enjoy reading.

5 Star Review of All Fired Up (Brothers of Fire #1) by Kathryn Shay

I was excited when I heard that Kathryn Shay had a new series releasing and if this book is anything to go by, then she has a winning series on her hands. Jarek Zenko is an Afghanistan war vet turned firefighter/EMT who has a hard time letting down the walls he has built to protect himself.

He wasn’t looking for a relationship but meeting Lacey Roth, an adolescent psychiatrist he feels the walls beginning to crumble. The heart wants to who the heart wants and as he gets to know Lacey he finds himself beginning to hope

I really loved Lacey, she is such a strong, independent woman who refuses to settle for less than she deserves and I admired that. I am excited to see what Ms. Shay has in store for the rest of the series

.I liked this book very muchLacey was a wonderful person but her mom was a stuffed shirt. I kept waiting for Jarek to tell Lacey about his brother who died in the war, but after she found out about it, she freaked out. I thought her reaction was too much; she was a psychiatrist and should have been more focused on helping him, not increasing his stress.

Loved all the Polish in here - I knew most of the words, but not pierdole. I have to find my Polish dictionary.
