The Interiors , one of the artist's major final series, caricature colourful magazine spreads of art-filled rooms. With the artist's usual dry wit, they depict domestic spaces, occasionally occupied by Nudes from his other late series. Includes paintings, prints, sculpture, source materials, and drawings.
This Interiors book is the companion to the 1999 MCA Chicago exhibit of Roy Lichtenstein’s work of the same name. I saw that exhibit in person as a college student and instantly fell in love with Lichtenstein’s work. I bought this book then and it has had a special place in my collection ever since. Was wonderful to pull it down and read it again.
You either appreciate Lichtenstein or you don’t. I love his wit, his cleverness, the proud re-contextualizing of comic book art. His bold, sparse pop art linework (which dovetails wonderfully with my appreciation for the Memphis Group’s work) and wry sense of humor when reframing his own work inside of other works, delighting in the humor and craft of it all.
Highly recommended reading for this period in Lichtenstein’s career.
