In this alliterative countdown book, ten groundhogs cannot wait for winter to end so they can get out of their den!
Ten grouchy groundhogs Crowded in their den, They squirmed and they stretched And then...then...then...
TEN GROUCHY GROUNDHOGS is a hilarious countdown story about a den of grouchy, grubby, gobbling, gabby, giggly, groovy, graceful, glitzy, gleeful, groggy groundhogs getting ready for their great big day.
This cute rhyming subtraction story starts with 10 groundhogs in the den. One by one they all leave the den to go outside. The silly story makes a nice change from the usual Groundhog's Day story. The holiday isn't even mentioned in the story at all, but in an afterward with an explanation about Groundhogs day
Amusing counting book- actually subtraction- as one by one, the groundhogs with cabin fever, wander outside! Illustrations are loaded with details for older kids to explore and see what the groundhogs have been up to in their burro all winter! Nice little explanation of Groundhog Day at the end.
This is a very reactive countdown book with great pictures! The Grouchy Groundhogs do some crazy things throughout the story and young students would love it!
Less about groundhogs and more in the vein of 10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. They try to compensate for this with a blurb on the inside back page about the actual day.
Count down book in rhyme. Readers count backward from ten to one as the groundhogs leave their den for a variety of reasons. Brightly colored detailed illustrations support the text.
this is just OK but it's a groundhog-themed book that also incorporates counting so i might use it for my groundhog day themed storytime. not my favorite but i think the kids would enjoy it.
This book teaches rhyming words. The story starts with ten goundhogs (then one leaves on each page)...9 grouchy groundhogs..8.. Similar to the ducks song. Each page shows the groundhogs in a new setting. On the last page: "One grumpy groundhog wonders, "Where are all my friends?" He goes out of his hole and see all the groundhogs on land. They all have scared looks on their faces because they saw their shadows. They all go back down into their hole and are smiling and snuggled up sleeping. This story explains the meaning of Groundhog Day. On February 2, if the groundhogs do not see their shadows, they stay outside, then spring will come soon!
My daughter loves this story. Its really cute and I like the word play. Use it for groundhogs day to help kids understand what the groundhogs does when he comes out. More so for entertainment rather than lesson. Good for story time after or before you open lessons on groundhogs. It can also be used for counting, like counting down, my daughter likes the end when she counts all ten groundhogs. They aren't in a nice line so counting carefully can be a skill this helps with.
I was excited when I first saw this book because I was for sure it was about Groundhog's Day. It turned out to be about ten groundhogs all living in the same hole. It is so cute! It kind of goes off of the nursery rhyme "10 monkeys jumping on the bed" and has a sing-song quality to it. I think this would be a great read for K-2 students. Sometimes you need silly books in the classroom to keep them entertained!
My 3-yr-old thought this was so funny and I had to read it several times tonight. It was cute and the illustrations were funny, but not a book I feel like we need to own.
I'm getting pickier and pickier with the books I try to read to my kids. I wouldn't worry about missing this one.
Ten Grouchy Groundhogs is a fun book to share to build up for Groundhog Day (February 2) and to use on that day with young children. They learn some facts about groundhogs and have fun counting too.
Ten Grouchy Groundhogs is a lively take on a holiday that is often overlooked. Authors Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook explain how the book came to be at http://www.patzietlowmiller.com
Used for Groundhog Storytime. Great interaction with counting down numbers and repeated, "Out, Out, Out!" on every page. Highly recommended for storytime!
