The translation is awkward in some places, and there are a few typos. Very good quality color reproductions (all plates are color) of many of the masterpieces of the Tretyakov collections, which range in time from Byzantine era icons to the late 20th century. At 136 pages, this can only be a tiny sampling.

I learned that Russian portraiture arose from the country's tradition of icon painting. Many icon painters became portrait painters, and in fact icon painting continued into the 19th century.

The translation can be awkward at time but it overall is a good overview of the gallery and Russian art.
