A fast-paced adventure with a heavy dose of melodrama. The ending was rather predictable but a lot of things along the way were surprising. A fun book to sit back and read without a ton of mental effort!

Shelves: for-a-thrill
I can come up with no more modern word than "potboiler" to describe this story.
It's a fluffy suspense story, with some parts exciting, some bits utterly absurd, and overall a fun romp.
There's an innocent but constantly wronged heroine, a terrible secret about her parentage, a couple of real (or fake? or real?) weddings, a noble suitor who stays in the background until needed, a dastardly villain who desires the heroine for his wife, a jealous, manipulating virago, a so-called water-tight conspir

Sarah Elizabeth Forbush Downs (1843–1926) was a "dime novelist" from the United States.

In 1868, she married George Sheldon Downs. She used a form of his name as a pseudonym in much of her writing.

Her career began with newspaper contributions in 1869. She was signed by Theodore Dreiser to write for his Smith's Magazine. Dreiser considered her to be one of the "three most popular authors in the wor
