A competent person who respected her profession and most importantly, she respected her patients enough to not promise them a garden of roses.

what a great privilege to read something written by Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, The book might be outdated nevertheless is till discussing a today issues. But you can be in awe that this book was written in the 50s or so, how she was doing therapy back then. especially her view on working inside the hospital, doing therapy for inpatient patients. One can see the beauty of the psychoanalytic thinking and how it matters even if the long classic on the couch analysis wasn’t feasible.

She explained and talked about many great concepts in therapy, it might be not suitable for a inexperienced therapist, but i do encourage to read this for historical context. As well as to be reminded on how Therapy ( in all its schools and forms) should be. It’s still an integral part that hasn’t be lost over the years. Therapy is a sacred and not an easy thing or task to do. And you can see how sacred it’s in this book.

It's been years since I've read Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's books and papers, but this is one of two books that I still own. Her outlook on psychiatric illnesses might be somewhat dated, but her humanity, intelligence and common sense come through. Above all, she is a compassionate voice. And that never goes out of style.

She is the therapist of the girl in the fictionalized biographical novel I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by Hannah Green/Joanne Greenberg. Loved her in that book then went on to read her real writings.

This is one of the most underrated, or at least under-recommended, books on the principles and techniques of psycho-analytic psychotherapy. It is packed with useful information the core intervention of classical analysis- interpretations! What to interpret, how, when, why, special circumstances, etc. It is descriptive without being overly confining or reductionist. I am very glad I picked this book up and I'm sure I will return to it over the years as I refine my practice
