"Menopause, the end of menstruation and fertility, is a natural biological process, not a medical condition. Even so, the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause can disrupt a women's life and require treatment if severe. Very often, women arrive at their menopause years without knowing anything what they might expect, or when or how the process starts and how long it may last. Many women have not been informed about this stage of life, in the US it may often be the case that physicians, older female family members or members of a women's social group have provided no insight or information. With confusion over the risks of estrogen therapy, the proliferation of alternative therapies, concerns about osteoporosis and heart disease, and questions about sexual health, the need for clear useful information is endless. What Nurses Know...Menopause sheds new light on this natural biological process and itÃs symptoms from a trusted nurses. "
Karen Roush established her credentials (with me, anyway) right away in her introduction to WHAT NURSES KNOW...MENOPAUSE. As a Nurse Practitioner advising other women on menopause, she says, she was "All the while thinking I would breeze through, I mean, really, isn't a lot of it mind over matter anyway?" But then...the hot flashes. The panic attacks, Stress, fatigue, poor sleep...and so she wrote the book that she wished she had had access to.
This is a clear, comprehensive, and well-organized reference, written to be easily accessible to women at any level of knowledge about menopause. Roush takes the time to define terms (I learned something) before addressing areas of concern. Okay, the chapter on the basics of the reproductive system was tedious, but, you know. Reproductive system. It was boring in high school biology, too.
Plus, it is followed by the chapter on hot flashes! And the one on sleep problems! And hooray, one on sexuality! All the sexy stuff about menopause - clearly presented information that is backed by cited research and helpful web resources. I particularly liked the comprehensive presentation about sleep therapies (medication and behavioral), with notes about side effects and benefits of each. (Yeah, I have insomnia. HATE IT.)
So now, armed with all this info, I am going to visit my ob-gyn and sling a whole bunch of medical terms around. Boy, will she be impressed. Maybe she'd like to read this book too? Thanks very much to LibraryThing's Early Reviewer's Program for sending me this Early Reviewer's book!
