The author read letters, takes trips, and interviews people throughout China and the U.S. to piece together the lives of her grandmother and her grandmother's sister. Her grandmother was an accomplished scientist and her great aunt a writer. Their lives were extraordinary despite political and social turmoils. I find the author's insight into how and why her great aunt blurred the lines between truth and fiction particularly fascinating.
Sasha Su-Ling Welland grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, she began recording her grandmother's oral history and investigating her great-aunt's career as a writer.
