I loved it. This book is about World War 1, post war, World War 2 and the after war planes. It shows where it was made, what kind of defense it had, how fast it could and go and many other facts about the planes. It has many different planes like the MK.1 Spitfire, the p-51 Mustang. the Bristol Baeufighter, the mosquito, the F4 Phantom and my favorite the LockHeed F-80 Shooting Star. This book for World War 2 and 1 plane lovers. If you like planes that destroy and create destruction, than this is the book for you. There is a little section in the back of modern jets like the F4 Phantom and the harrier jet. The post war planes. There aren't any helicopters. If you are like to learn about planes where they are from, the time period and what they served as, you will love reading this. Full of detail. Once again I really loved this book. The planes are good ways to learn about some history and this is a book that will do that.
Military fighter airplanes of various eras of development and geographic locations are presented. Details about their development, technologies, and capabilities are emphasized.
The book seems to be written from a European perspective, which was a nice change from the other books I have read on this subject. In addition to various European fighters of which I had little previous knowledge, American and Russian jets are presented as well, which is typical of this type of book. I think the European perspective comes out stronger in certain examples: 1) The British Harrier is presented as the "only" successful V/STOL aircraft to date. This seems to be a jab at the F-35. 2) The Eurofighter Typhoon seems a little hyped when it is more or less described as THE jet that will protect NATO airspace in the 21st century. No American support needed, thank you. As I said, this perspective made the book refreshing.
Two other features of this book I have not seen in other jet fighter enthusiast books were biographies of famous pilots and a simplified description of aircraft and engine aerodynamics. I preferred the biographies. I had never taken the time to learn about Von Richtofen before reading this book. Also, some of the pilots featured were aircraft company founders and it was interesting to read about their enthusiasm. The initial aerodynamics descriptions were simplified to an appropriate extent while remaining faithful to the physics. Later in the book, the descriptions are oversimplified. I understand the need to do this even though I am not a fan, and I was encouraged that the earlier descriptions were good.
The writing in these kinds of books is not great and it seems to come from a project or sales engineer associated with the aircraft company. Some of the book reads like a sales pitch or brochure. But the writing quality is not the main point of this type of book and the presentation of the "technology, facts, and history", as the subtitle says, was good.
