Have I Got News For You Guide to Modern Britain

Rate this book
In this "Guide to Modern Britain," the team at Have I Got News for You attempts to guide you around, er, modern Britain.

With reassuringly jaundiced reflections on everything from the global recession, religion and the Royal Family to the NHS, education and the media, it's a guide to the UK's most pressing questions of the moment and a handy primer to the British Constitution, even though we don't actually have one. (How clever is that?)

Think of it as the sort of manual you get with a car - enough information to help you check the oil, though not enough to re-balance the steering.

The "Have I Got News for You Guide to Modern Britain" covers these and many other major issues in an entirely non-judgmental, non-PC, non-party-political, non-tax-deductible, non-partisan, non-invasive, non-intrusive, non-comprehensive and non-non-profit-making way. It's guaranteed to entertain, enlighten and enrage in equal measure.

An irreverent, cynical and sarcastic 'guide' to Modern Britain in the inimitable style of the 'Have I Got News for You' team. Entertaining quick read. 7/10.

I recently came across old (and recent) YouTube recordings of the British topical news quiz Have I Got News for You and I was hooked. It was helpful that the scandals being discussed were usually long past and frequently involved people I had never heard of. Beats the modern day mess in the world -- although their take on that was also amusing. I think I have watched 95% of the episodes of 30 seasons of British TV. So I ordered this book from an online used book seller when I came across it. It is dated but still amusing (not in a ROFL but more in a British wry smile with slightly patronizing tone way). And the historical info and info on British politics was actually useful to me.

Very amusing read as to be expected and covered all the essentials of British life. However, like Hislop himself it erred too much on the side of needless pessimism and spent too much time ripping into pretty much anything or anyone it could. Nevertheless it's short enough to justify everyone's attention at least once and may even clear up some long term nagging questions!

Vtipný bedekr to života v UK. Nebo vlastně v Británii? Ale občas je správně Anglie. Tak jak to tedy celé je? Nejen na tuto základní otázku vesmíru odpoví tato kniha. Plus kdo má rád BBC a její zábavné quiz show, je to must read.

The British way of life is examined.

Some parts of the book are very amusing, but overall it felt very dated – even though it was only written in 2009.

I had a laugh, but seriously - this book is a guide to modern Britain for Britons only.
