As an artist with Hallmark since 1970, John Wagner created Maxine in 1986 as a new character line for the Shoebox Greetings card division. He created a brazen older woman with a stooped back, a mop of curly gray hair and abrasive personality. Wagner’s mom, grandmother and unmarried aunts provided inspiration for the comic creation.

He attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, Massachusetts and began work as part of a new Hallmark artists’ group following graduation.

My cousin sent me this when she saw it in a used bookstore because Maxine always reminded us of our grandma. She had the same spunk. I'll stick to a few cards at a time to get my Maxine fix in the future, but it was a fun rememberance.

Just needed something to laugh about! Maxine is a lot of sarcastic and a bit rank! But, sometimes what she states hits the nail on the head! Mr. Wagner's art work is funny and very detailed, I especially like the "cat" don't know it's name!

Maxine is always good for a laugh! Short book, but enjoyable.

There were one or two pages I found humorous but everything else was either crass or far-fetched. The illustrations were funny, but they didn't make up for the text surrounding them. If you are already a fan of this character you might enjoy this book, but I'd much rather peruse holiday card racks and read snippets then a whole book.

I just love Maxine. And this book did not disappoint. Not all the zingers were good, but there was enough to make the book enjoyable.
