Born and raised in Chicago, I graduated from DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana) and later received an MA in humanities from the University of Chicago. I've published books for children since the early 1990s. My books - including numerous unpublished ones! - run a broad gamut, from stories geared for pre-schoolers to survival stories and biographies aimed at seven to eleven-year-olds. My work is wide-ranging because, basically, I'm a generalist by experience - and inclination!
In addition to writing, I paint regularly under the art name Burleigh Kronquist and have shown work in one-person and group shows in Chicago, New York, and elsewhere around the country.

This book is just soooooo cool! The characters really do go "through" the book! It's fun to see how they will get to the next page and learn all the different feels readers can experience through the act of reading. I especially enjoyed the page that refers to others sharing "spoilers" when as a reader you share the questions you have as whatever story you are reading progresses. This is a gem to share as a read aloud at the beginning of the year at the library and classroom, and I can imagine readers revisiting it throughout the year as they experience some of the descriptions in this story.

This one didn't do much for me, which surprised me, being a bibliophile. I felt like it was a little too abstract for the intended audience.

My preschooler made me read this twice through the morning he found it on the library shelf, and demanded more. I'm not sure what a child who was not book-mad would make of it, but my guy loves it.
The narrator announces "I am going to go all the way through this book" and makes an adventure of it, accompanied first by a mad bookstamping monkey and collecting a series of animal companions one on each page-- an elephant, an ostrich in cowboy boots, a reading bear, a hippo, a butterfly, a bat, an alligator, a goat... each page is a different landscape, from meadows to dark woods, jungle to snowy landscape... full of fun touches and sensory words as the narrator savors the experience. At last the adventurers slide down a final slope to "The End" but the triumphant narrator notes that he will just 'stop to catch his breath' and go back to the beginning and go through it again.
Characters interact with the pages (the monkey makes autumn leaves from a bookmark and snow from a 'ripped' page, while bear, alligator and goat peer through 'tears' between page scenes) and the cover and flap include self-referential text. "This way to the front of the book" on the back cover, "This is the flap. The flap is a part of this jacket. And this jacket is wrapped around this book. And this book is the book that I love going through. Want to watch me do it?"
It sounds dull-ish and stodgy when described, but when reading it with a real live audience it is vastly entertaining. Lots of opportunity for "What is [the character] doing here?" and "What do you notice about this page?" conversations, as well as following favorite animals. I like the goofy illustrations myself and they play well with my readee; except that I find the narrator's nose annoyingly Pinocchio-like. I expect that even book non-fans might find something to enjoy in this volume.

I really liked this book, especially the illustrations, which I almost liked more than the story itself! I can't decide if my favorite character is the Elephant in Eyeglasses, the Bear Reading, or the Ostrich in Boots (her hat is fabulous!). This is a fun read, with neat rhymes, and would be fun for kids, too, to go through and turn the pages with the little boy protagonist to see what's ahead.

An action packed adventure that my son thoroughly enjoys. He likes the action (of course) and rhythm of the text. The pictures are fun too. You have to read it at least twice... but you'll understand that after you read it once!

I LOVE GOING THROUGH THIS BOOK , A book about a kid whose telling his story on his passion for reading. Throughout the book there are a ton of cartoon drawings that will keep kids interested in reading.

Children reacted well to this book but for 3rd graders I don't think they grasped the concept of the book.
