At the beginning of the 20th century, a young unknown pharaoh remained, beneath his golden mask, in the darkness of a tomb deep in the Valley of the Kings. His name was Tutankhamun. He had lain undisturbed for a thousand years until two men, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, discovered the tomb and wrested him from obscurity in an attempt to solve his riddle.

The perfect historical book that didn't bore me for even a second and that I completely devoured page by page, chapter by chapter.
The disadvantages of historical books are that they usually are big but slow and that they can info-dump and don't have really lively characters, plot or dialogue, but this book had all this and included witty remarks and speech.
I felt like everything was happening right in front of my eyes and I was stunned by the beauty of the whole story and the writing.

While there are facts in this book, Jacq seems to have filled out the information available with his own experiences as an Egyptologist and a Frenchman's romantic point of view. Far from detracting, it gives Howard Carter a soul that I doubt he had in real life. HC was definitely a thief as some proclaim him in this book; his butler revealed a false wall in his house filled with Ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Beautiful retelling of a forgotten hero. This book is written exactly how I imagined Carter to be. Absolutely splendid!

S ...more

I really enjoyed this exciting lead-up (albeit a translation)to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, even though I knew what was going to happen! It was intriguing to take on board a positive perspective of Howard Carter, who is portrayed as an almost spiritual, non-materialistic "Egyptophile", unlike so many uncomplimentary accounts of his adventures in the Valley of the Kings, where he is depicted as a ruthless gold-digging (literally!)treasure-hunter. Now I just have to go to Egypt!

3/10

Não me seduziu nada.

Kokonaisuudessaan ihan ok. Liian monessa kohtaa eteni tosi hitaasti. Kiinnostavia faktoja. Hyvin kuvailtu, kun usein tuli ihan ärsytys niitä ihmisiä kohtaan.

I think I like his novels set in ancient Egypt more but I enjoyed this one too. The finding of Tutankhamun is one of the most exciting things in egyptology.

Exciting to a point, but after the discovery of Tut's tomb, which you know has to happen, the novel really drags without much fulfillment in the end.

Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.

Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was s
