Michael Teitelbaum has been a writer and editor of children’s books for more than thirty years. He worked on staff as an editor at Golden Books, Grossett & Dunlop, and Macmillan. In addition to The Scary States of America, Michael’s fiction work includes The Very Hungry Zombie: A Parody, and The Very Thirsty Vampire: A Parody both done with artist extraordinaire Jon Apple, published by Skyhorse. His non-fiction work includes writing Jackie Robinson: Champion for Equality, published by Sterling, and The Baseball Hall of Fame, a 2-volume encyclopedia, published by Grolier. He is also the series editor of Great Escapes, true-life acts of incredible courage, published by Harper Collins. Michael has always had an interest in the paranormal, despite a rather normal childhood in Brooklyn, NY. These days, Michael lives with his wife, Sheleigah, and two talkative cats in an (as yet unhaunted) 180-year-old farmhouse in the beautiful Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.
I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m not a huge fan of Superman. I’ve read quite a few books that feature him but I’m not a super-fan so I was happy and surprised that I enjoyed this Superman book... especially considering how simple it is.
What’s it about? Pretty much it’s just a fun little picture book introduction to the character Superman.
Pros: The story is pretty good and well written. The art is nice. The characters are well written. There’s a good, fun fight scene at the end, I always enjoy a good superhero fight!
Cons: I know this may sound like a dumb complaint about a picture book (hey, a good book is a good book no matter how old you are, that’s why I still read them sometimes) but it’s predictable. The ending is so stupid and typical.
Overall: Good book. I could definitely see this being a good introduction to the DC universe for kids. Definitely recommended if you’re trying to get your kids into superheroes or even if you’re like me and don’t have kids but still sometimes enjoy a fun little picture book.
This is a great book for your boys! My son absolutely loves this story. There is a character page before the story that gives a brief description of each character. It introduced Superman; describing what planet he came from and how he got to Earth. After sharing this with Lois Lane, Superman is needed back on Earth to fight of Lex Luthor.
copyright: 2009 genre: fantasy theme: superpower, justice My favorite part about this book is how the illustrations help you follow the story line. I would use this book in my library but not as a part of any instruction.
My children absolutely adore this book. Reading literature is so important to the development of a child's mind, and I cannot think of thing I would rather do then sit down to read to them in the evenings. Imagination and growth are so vital in those so young.
pretty stagnant, but that's typical for I Can Read books. it's a simple introduction to Superman with clean art, and Lois and Clark are dorks which i absolutelyadore <3
For some reason S pulled this out to read the other night, even though he is incredibly far beyond these books in terms of reading level at this point. I guess he just wanted a little nostalgia. He went through a phase of being obsessed with these superhero easy readers when he was 5 or 6 years old. Frankly I'm happy he's well past that phase now! ETA December 2020: F is very interested in this book right, now for whatever reason. She told me Superman is "strong and rough". Okay then!
What can i say! It is a good story easy to follow with great designs and colours. It was a good introduction to comic books and Superman to my little one. Highly recommended
