Opening quote: And the sun rose over the earth, as a new day dawned. Stele of Piankhy

Opening: When she saw her husband returning from the temple, the village headman's wife tried to make herself believe that he was carrying a sack of wheat on his shoulders.

In Egypt, great changes within the 23rd and 24th dynasties led to rule from Nubia in the 25th Dynasty. From wiki (always frill-free, if at times inaccurate!): Piye (once transliterated as Piankhi d. 721 BC) was a Kushite

This book takes the reader to the time of The Black Pharaoh, who reigned for a little over thirty years (747-715 BC). As the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt, he was faced with a great enemy –Tefnakht, who in his desire for power wanted to take everything that the Black Pharaoh had. In this story on one side we have hunger for power, greed and injustice and on the other we have great faith, justice and a fight for the rights for all men.

This story could have been full of unnecessary violence, los

I used to like Jacq's books very much but this one was a bit disappointing.

Set in Ancient Egypt, it tells the story of the Black Pharaoh, but from a very unrealistic point of view and telling us about the 'magic' in the pharaoh's life: the connection he had with nature, with animals, and with the land of Egypt.

It is nice because of the historical period it is set in but it is more a fantasy novel than historical novel.

I love Jacq's take on history, even though I don't think it comes anywhere near to being the truth. It makes for a great story; Ancient Egypt comes alive in his writing. I've enjoyed everything I've read by him.

Before anyone asks, NO, I did NOT read this in Spanish!!! It was the only Cover I could find on Goodreads....

The story itself was pure Christian Jacq, simply told with no frills, but enjoyable nevertheless.

couldnt get into this book despite having enjoyed his other works. Interestingly my brother also felt the same way about this one.

An entertaining story.
