Lots of recipes, many with pictures, covering various styles of food and lots of different proteins (including tofu, and with a vegetarian section). Most of the recipes are more fancy than home-style, and there are plenty that look really delicious. My two complaints are a) many of the recipes call for alcohol as an ingredient. I don't have a problem with alcohol, but even the less expensive wines (by which I mean $12 per bottle or so, not boxed Franzia) are not in our household budget. This cookbook asks for white wine, rosé, red wine, bourbon, rum, orange liqueur, framboise, sparkling wine, vermouth, white Zin, sherry, and those are just what I saw quickly flipping through while writing this review. b) the editors seem to forget that not everyone has the luxury of California crops or a Whole Foods market (and budget). The book was published by Sunset, which is a west coast publication, so to some extent they can be forgiven for this, but even in parts of CA it's not easy to pick up escarole, mesclun, kale, farro, watercress, Belgian endive, raclette cheese, cotija, pasilla chiles, giant kelp (kombu), udon, fresh lemon grass, etc. I've lived both in and out of CA, and I know how hard it is to find even some of the simpler ingredients they call for, like Gruyere, soba or quinoa. When the book was written 12 years ago, it would have been even more difficult.
