Jean Marie Auel is an American writer who wrote the Earth's Children books, a series of novels set in prehistoric Europe that explores human activities during this time, and touches on the interactions of Cro-Magnon people with Neanderthals. Her books have sold more than 45 million copies worldwide.
I have never read anything like these books. They let me climb into this era and feel its reality; sex, childbirth, daily struggle. Auel took us back in time with the feeling that she had lived there herself. I didn't just read her books, I experienced them.
If you take up this series, these are the only three books that you need to read in it. DON'T BOTHER READING THE REST!! They're garbage. I started the series a loooong time ago. As years went by, you could tell by the ever increasing length of time between title releases and the decline in the quality of plot and dialog that the author didn't want to write the series anymore. I don't know if she got tied into a contract or what, but you could tell that her heart wasn't in it anymore. Spoiler: they live happily ever after.
I loved everything about this entire series. The scenery, characters, and wonderful story played out beautifully. The details makes you almost feel as if you are present watching their lives unfold before you.
I LOVED IT!!! This has been my Favorite book for 20years. However, I had difficulty keeping their names and positions in the Clan straight so I wrote it all out-as a reference. Being able to take a glance helped me stay focused and learn them all like Family.
Then I absorbed myself into this life of Very Long Ago. This book took me places I had never even imagined The other books were good, but not Exceptional like the 1st book was I have revisited this book again and again Very Highly Recommended
This series is my favorite of all time - I picked it up as a teenager in the 80's. I read the whole series (minus the final book) at least every two years. It's like spending time with a friend. After waiting for the final book for more than 10 years it was a little disappointing due to much repetition of the previous books. Even as my least loved book in the series, I'm grateful to the author for closing the chapter on Ayla's life journey with Land of Painted Caves.
This is my favorite series/ books of all time. Prehistoric Europe. How people lived and what they did for medicinal purposes. Very interesting. The story starts with the main character throughout the series; Ayla, a young girl, wonders off from her family and then an earthquake happens. She cannot find her family and a Neanderthal women adopts her.
Splendid. Something way out of the ordinary. Really a different kind of reading. Determination, love ,confidence, happiness, hardships, all in one. Best read in a long time. But you must read all the books as the run concurrently with one another. Read this 4 times. Love it.
This is a very compelling series to read. It grabs you and pulls you in immediately.
One of the reviews states something like "You suffer a moment of displacement when you are whisked 2500 years away from the time of Ayla" I'm afraid it's very true.
I read all 3 over a weekend, when I bought them. I began "Clan..." Friday at 3:00 and finished "Mammoth..." Monday at 3:00 AM. Being a reader, this wasn't a difficult thing to do. I was amazed at how terrifically written they were. I had, prior to reading them, been somewhat "sneering" of them. But, afterwards, I couldn't wait for the next 2.
Another hit!!! Valley of Horses brought Ayla to a new land and new friends. Friends that have never been friends to Clan. Ayla has a huge heart of compassion and an incredible will to survive. She survives very well and saves other lives in the process...good read!
I have read the entire 5 book series. The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Valley of Jorses, The Mamoth Hunters, The Plains of Passage, and The Shelters of Stone. Very entertaining!
