When a new girl comes to Andy's school, a jealous Dolores thinks he's in love — but Andy's thoughts are on a companion of the four-legged kind.
On the day Ms. Janice introduces Lark Alice Bell to the class, Dolores is proud to be the new girl's helper at recess. But Dolores is not so glad to see her friend Andy scribbling LAB inside a heart in his notebook, and she's downright mad to find out that Lark has visited Andy at home. Luckily, when they all go back to Lark's house — and take a peek at the squirming puppies in her basement — Dolores figures out what has really been on Andy's mind all along. In his fourth engaging adventure, Andy Shane learns about the delicate balance of old friends and new, and the special joy of bringing home a dog of his own.

I thought this book was cute and a good book to base a lesson around. I enjoyed reading it and thought it had some funny twists and moments. I would definitely consider having this book in my future classroom.
Andy Shane begins to spend time with the new girl in his class. His other friend, Dolores, thinks Andy is being unfair because he has built a snow fort with the new girl, Lark, and he had promised to build it with Dolores. The book leads readers to believe that Andy and Lark have crushes on each other, especially when Andy writes Larka's initials with a heart around them in his notebook. That is not the case, though. The three actually become friends in the end. I read this with my 7 year-old sister and she enjoyed it a lot because she did not see the ending turn out the way it did. Neither did I! This book symbolizes that change can be good. It may be a good book to read to students when they are having personal problems with friends at school. It may solve problems of jealousy when it comes to friends. I think this is a good chapter book to use for beginner readers, but I do not think it exhibits any exceptional elements of quality literature.
There is a new girl in town and Andy's friend Dolores isn't so happy about that but there is a reason that Andy is spending a lot of time with her and it has to do with a puppy.
Very cute little story about "puppy love". Good read for 2nd or 3rd grade.
This is a good book to discuss change. It also touches on jumping to conclusion, which children often do. This is a good book to read to students to show them that things are not always as they seem.
Takes place in the winter, jealousy abounds from Dolores. Typical "I want to help the new kid" story, but typical as in well-written because it's realistic.
