About the author

George Henry Borrow was an English author who wrote novels and travelogues based on his own experiences traveling around Europe. Over the course of his wanderings, he developed a close affinity with the Romani people of Europe, who figure prominently in his work. His best known books are The Bible in Spain (1843), the autobiographical Lavengro (1851), and The Romany Rye (1857), about his time with the English Romanichal (gypsies).

An interesting book giving a warts and all picture of Gypsy (Zincali) traditions, loyalties and crimes. Borrow is able to blend, by language and costume, with these otherwise 'closed' communities, particularly those in Spain. He is 'on their side' and against their persecution in many countries but doesn't shrink from describing their immoral/illegal/evil practices. The book is sometimes repetitive but relieved by anecdotes. It is of its early nineteenth century period but not out of date. It speculates as to Romany origins, as between Egypt and India. I recall the surprise of welcoming Romany MEPs to our Group in the European Parliament when countries such as Hungary and Romania joined the EU, something that could not have happened in Borrow's day and is still rare in our own.
